Anakin's greatest weakness was the lack of control of his emotions. Mace was the complete opposite of that. He had greater knowledge of the force, was just as powerful, if not more so than Anakin and he was a master of control. I think the answer is clear in any scenario.

Mace would win with little effort. Anakin is as emotionally balanced as a wet noodle in a hurricane. Vapaad is an exceptional lightsaber form. The user can use their inner most hatred without succumbing to it, take in the Dark Side-aligned emotions of their opponent, and reflect all of it back at them. Windu co-created this variant of Juyo (which was forbidden for use) and he mastered it. It's why he defeated Palpatine in single combat. The novelization describes them both as "formless blurs" dancing across the senate office, with only the hue of their Lightsabers being visible. Even Darth Sidious himself did not know that pushing himself further and further to keep up with Windu was only making him stronger. I'd dare say that Dooku would have a better shot at defeating Windu than Palpatine and Anakin combined. Dooku never let his emotions consume him because even he knew that blind hate clouds judgement. The latter being vital for Makashi, or Form 2, as it requires spacial awareness, precise movement and adaptability. None of which you have when you're going full rage mode and constantly overhead swinging at your opponent. This is why you never saw him with yellow eyes. His hate and anger only manifested themselves in contempt and arrogance. And he was one of the best Lightsaber duelists in that era, second only to Yoda.

Strength vs Scenario Both mace and anakin have exceptional skills but unlike windu, anakins power is still growing, thus in chancellors office he holds the advantages: 1..he is younger and stronger than mace in the force. 2..second while windu has more expertise, the sidious fight has weakened him so he isnt in his best shape against anakin in his pinnacle physical prime. 3..dooku only held back for a while on anakin until he fought seriously and was defeated. Anakin beat windu's equal in dooku. 4..the force had let him down. It is the will of the force(plot armor of lucas) that he would lose this fight. Not even the 2nd strongest jedi can defy it. 5.. anakins djemso counters vaapad.

So it comes down to lightsaber combat soley. And , that is Sidious' specialty. @@eros2144 I was always under the impression that on the Jedi Council, Yoda was the Force Supreme (if it needed a title) and Mace was the Swordsman Supreme (as above). That's why Mace used his sabre to defend against Sidious's Force Lightning instead of using Tutaminis. Yoda was more expert in Tutaminis and so attempted to defend that way. Mace was probably the only Jedi that could have used his sabre to defend against Sidious's Force Lightning. So, as stated above, since he had mastered ALL the fighting forms, he wouldn't have been phased by Anakin not using dark side powers and found Vapaad not as useful as it was against Sidious. He would have simply adapted to the appropriate form and taken Anakin out that way.

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but we get an Anakin vs Mace fight in the ROTS video game and it's pretty good IMO. The dialogue actually fits very well with how Anakin was rationalizing everting in his head. I highly suggest everyone go check it out.

Mace may have shatterpoint, but that was only if he was focused on the individual. once his focus was on, he was unaware of anything outside his focal point. Hence why Anakin was easily able to slice off Mace's arm. If Mace and Anakin were battling each other to start, Mace would wipe the floor with him cause Anakin was completely fractured, hence why he was easily taken over by Palpatine. It comes down to this. Vaapad is the darkest jedi form there was. It borderlines on the dark side. Add shatterpoint into that, and Mace is unstoppable. Palpatine was getting owned and he knew it. if Anakin didn't arrive, Palpatine would been killed. But the minute he did arrive, it was the distraction he needed to get Mace to focus on him only and ignore the actual weapon he had to beat him, that was Anakin.

I always preferred the idea that Mace won legitimately. Not only bcs it is the official version but bcs it shows that Sidious had weaknesses and was not god like. He was an amazing fighter but did not like lightsaber fighting even though he was unbelievable strong. But mace was THE best lightsaber fighter. Vaapad would have been one of the only things that could have killed Palpatin since it scales with the enemies power.

Jason Thaler that’s not true. Mace isn’t the best duelist, yoda is and count dooku has also bested mace in a duel when he was younger however. Palpatine is a good duelist but he’s not insane. He can hold his own and even beat good duelists but yoda is prolly the best duelist and count dooku and mace would be on the same level in dueling and in the force. Mace was just a wildcard against palpatine, if the fight continued palpatine would kill mace with ease

Mace’s opponent doesn’t have to be actively using the dark side... they just have to have that darkness inside and showing enough. In that sense mace would have an advantage over any iteration of Anakin short of, perhaps, Ep 6.

We can see that anakin under normal circumstances and if completely focused could make even Dooku into a joke. So at the end of ROTS if anakin was emotionally stable I’d say he’s probably 70% of sidious possibly more. You also have to remember anakin was only 23 at the end of ROTS. That’s really young. By 30 he would have most likely have surpassed the emperor.

Anakin was a more dedicated lightsaber duelist than Palpatine let's not forget, and his use of Djem So is perfect for combating pretty much any form because of the attack and retreat nature of the style. I would have loved to see a lightsaber duel between them in the movie as well, although I don't believe that Mace would be exhausted or anything after his duel with Palpatine because his use of Vaapad during that fight would have enabled him to keep going. Mace does have more offensive might than Obi-Wan though, so he would probably have an easier time getting through Anakin's defences. Mace would probably win, but it'd be cool to see Anakin win by some interesting twist.

It would've made Anakin's fall to the Dark side more badass if he fought and killed Mace here. They should've made Anakin block Mace's strike at first, this would make more sense anyways as Anakin was still conflicted at this point so blocking would make more sense then just chopping his hand off. Mace, already distrustful of Skywalker would engage him in this crazy duel where Anakin eventually overpowers Mace. The two already didn't like each because of the whole matter of Anakin not given the rank of master, it would become personal for Anakin. Killing Mace Windu would be a huge feat, building on the fact that he killed Dooku (one of the best duelists of his era) showing his growth in strength since episode II and really making it believable that he could slaughter dozens of Jedi in the temple and that he held the potential to become the most powerful being in the galaxy.

Yes and no. Yes, all variants of form 7 have a singularity of focus which can be detrimental against multiple opponents. It was a situation where shifting focus and ignoring either of them for a split second was disastrous. If he'd have focused on Anakin, even with his superconducting loop he'd be turning away from Palpatine. Sure he might counter more incoming force lightning partially, but if his blade is on Anakin during the torrent, the majority will get him without the benefit of converting it to his own energy, thereby leaving him vulnerable. If he turns back at Palpatine at that moment, well a similar result to what happened in the movie would happen. It's like when you are caught in a cross between two or more snipers in a shooter. Sure it might feed off dark emotions and the dark side, but versus force powers on the light side or neutral is quite debatable. Also, without a lightsaber Mace didn't beat Kar Vastor the first go around ...and I'm pretty sure he knew well in advance he was going to fight Kar. He also knew there was more than likely going to be a clash with Depa. He had resolved that he must forego Depa to carry on with the prophecy of the chosen one. And yet his former apprentice's bladework, even with her broken mind, surpassed his. Her mind was such a mess it was already past the shatterpoint which does hint that not all opponents can be read by shatterpoint. Sure he ultimately beat both of them, but it wasn't through physical might. Kar was beaten by oppotunistic tactics; Depa was disarmed by light sided genuine care, because Mace as a father figure to her would have rather been decapitated if she had truly fallen. In this way, Depa was not corrupt like Sora Bulq had become. Vaapad hadn't mastered her, she had just broken because of continual exposure to horrors of war. Also worth mentioning in the ROTS novel by the same author, Mace praised Obi Wan's blade skill with Soresu as being superior to his own. Kenobi being a humble man went for modesty, yet Mace continued that he (Mace) is only master of his own killing style, and regarded Kenobi as a truer Jedi in that respect. So if Depa's bladework surpassed his own, and Mace acknowledged there are those better than himself, that also stands to question if Vaapad could make enough of a difference against a more skilled opponent.

Growing up watching these over and over I was convinced Mace hated Anakin because he could feel the darkness in him. Mace had his own demons and through years of training he learned how to healthily channel that anger into his fighting, but in Anakin we see him always striving for more, which is a bad trait to pair with darkness. I think Mace knew Anakin was very likely to fall and that's why he hated him. I would kill to have gotten to see more Canon Mace duels. Mace vs Dooku would be a really cool fight. He would mop the floor with Maul though.

My comment on 2:20 : I believe that Mace was a more skilled duelist and fighter, gaining the upper hand on Palpatine truly and “defeating” him. However, Palpatine was definitely holding back in their duel, not necessarily in lightsaber skill but in his dark side powers as well, as he had obviously used a Force Scream to stun Sassee Tinn and Ajin Kolar. Seeing that he was being forced back, he played the loss to his advantage, showing Anakin a persona of a weakened man rather than that of the murderer of 3 masters (in brutal ways according to the novel), thus claiming Anakin to the Dark Side

Mace Windu would definitely win, if they were fighting during the events of Revenge of the Sith when Anakin reaches Palpatine's office. I also rather not think that Anakin would have been completely invincible even if his powers and combat skills were at an elite master level. Windu as a Gray Jedi, in my opinion has more of an edge on any purely Dark Side or even purely Light Side Force User. Part of this is also due to the Juyo saber form's own versatility against the other Lightsaber Forms.

I'd say Mace would win 6/10. He'd beat Anakin but it would definitely be close. I mean, Anakin killed Count Dooku, who could go toe to toe with Yoda. He and Mace are certainly on equal footing.

Only thing that I don't buy till today is ... Anakin was tempted by the emperor with the supposed knowledge of how to save those he love even if they die by cheating death. Why did he continue to serve him when the emperor failed to deliver what he promised? A relation between Anakin and the Emperor was never developed at the point at Anakin seeing a father figure on him or something of that sort to be in his side over other people he knew way more, so the only real attachment are the promises made. Also he said "From my point of view the Jedi are evil" ... after he killed innocent childrens ... In his mind were those little demons? It's not comparable with what he did to the sand people, cause there he was in a revenge frenezi after he saw his mother die in his arms after she have been torture, plus he didn't personally know any of them unlike the younglins. Neither his words nor his acts make sense at all, and a so abrupt change in his state of mind is not justified at all. The younglins scene was not only unnecesary but also puts a conflict in the plot.

There's no logical explanation for that act. And indeed kind of ruin his redemption in "The Return of the Jedi" ... cause there shouldn't be no redemption from an act like that. (Unless it's smehow kind off an accident and he didn't want to do it, and not something that was cold blooded and with all the time to think about it as it happened). You kinda can go against who you consider your family cause you're "conflicted" and think they betrayed you, or whatever .. but you cannot go killing kids cause someone that is clearly evil said you to do so, or gave beyond poorly explanations .. unless he thought they were possesed or something like that, I just don't know which excuse to give to make the plot make sense. Even he being from the beginning a beyond evil person that can go for an act like that (Think that again, kind of ruin his character), if all he did was because of his supposed love to Padme, How he even thought she would be ok with something like that? Again, it's not comparable at all with what happened with the Tusken Raiders. And indeed he starts like that, is not something he did years later when he was already consumed by the Dark side and hatred. Killing childrens is his first act as a Sith Lord. To be honest I prefer to think that didn't happen cause really wrecks it all.

@@Orto-jj2di There's always different levels and limits .. either on the level of malice you can have, and also with the level of mental health ... Someone can be a bad person cause you're someone that talks behind people and try to take always advantage from others, but that doesn't explain for example you cold blooded killing your mother. You having due parking tickets, doesn't transform you in a serial killer. You can be a crazy person also, who thinks that is Napoleon, but that doesn't explain you setting on fire a hospital. Logic doesn't understand emotions, but there's always a certain logic in ones acts that can be explained with your personality and/or background. Even in the cases in real life when a crime happens and a neightbour says to the reporter "I don't know how he could do that, he seemed like a good person", it cause clearly they didn't know him well. In the movie they present you the character and should explain him well enough, for the audience to know him well and understand his acts, if not you're failing at telling the story (Specially in the case of a well known character from whom we have already seen 6 movies). It's not a Hitchcock movie nor "The 6th sense" or "Primal Fear". Him killing the Sand People, is totally understandable, not saying it's ok, just that it makes sense and goes in concordanse with the character and his development so far. Mainly cause it's in an outburst of anger and is not something planned like what happened with the Younglins. The only way you can go with something that doesn't make sense at all (and is not in a frenzy of rage, or is not under the influence of drugs or something that at the end explains the act, that also at the end is what makes sense to it), is if you presents a total wacko character, that you can expect whatever from him at any moment, or if as said before, it's a Hitchcock movie, and you present a character to the audience, to later show him as something totally different cause that's the catch of the movie. But this is not a suspense movie, and Anakin being a wacko, again, ruins the character, that again, you've been presenting for 6 movies already. You can start being an angel and end being Hitler, but that doesn't happen in one day. Only way that could may be if you tense the cord too much happen, is if there's something beyond traumatic in the middle, and at that point there was nothing traumatic enough that explained that level of change. EDIT: By the way, that moment transforms him from the evil but respectable Lord of the Sith that brought fear to everyone who crosses him we knew and like, to a cowardly child murderer.

Dont forget in the Episode 3 video game, Anakin fights Mace as a boss fight. Instead of Anakin cutting off his hand, it transitions into Mace blocking the attack and the fight commences. At one point in the fight, Mace taunts Anakin by saying he's been tainted by the dark side, which entices Anakin. By the end of the fight, instead of Palpatine zapping him out the window, Anakin stabs him and kicks him out.

My one reservation to your logic in this video is that anakin would be still on the light more or less. But fighting mace, who has just defeated sidious, going against one of the most powerful jedi in the galaxy, who he knows personally and respected despite the rejection... he would feel fear. Not only from that, but from the possibility of losing his new mentor(palp) and a way to save padme. I believe he would panic from the fear and tap more and more into the dark side, which mace has the experience and skill to exploit. All that being said, Great video, and well explained.

I've always thought it would have been cool if Anakin blocked Mace's lightsabre (like vader blocked luke's in rotj) then they started dueling at which point Palpatine electrocuted Mace, thereby allowing Anakin to cut Msce down. The idea of two Dark Side Force users having to combine their skills to take out Mace would have been a more satisfying death than how it happened.

Big fan of Mace over Anikin or even Vadar. Both were very powerful especially seeing some of the new clone wars episodes really reflecting his prowess in battle even over Obi-wan at times. Mace seemed to be panicked when he faced the chancellor and I think if Anikin would have stopped Maces light saber, instead of cutting off his hand, that would have ended the conflict and Mace would have conceded to Anikins wishes to arrest the dark lord despite the risk seeing how passionate Ani was about his convictions. Having said that the only way I see them fighting is if Anikin had already gone full blown Vadar before the confrontation in the Chancellor's office. In that case having gone fully to the dark side Mace would absolutely wreck Anikin using his darkness against him with vapod. I think if the tables turned and Windu was the agressor and some how became unbalanced in the force turning to the dark side and challenging Anikin, who was defending everything he believed in as a Jedi and his close friends and Padme, Mace's vapod style would become ineffective possibly turning completely offensive in nature rather then strategically offensive in finding weaknesses in his opponent. Still very possible that Mace would best Anikin but also possible that Anikin, in the same way light side Mace would in his enemies, could turn Maces blind rage against him in some kind of hail marry strategy as Anikin was famous for doing in the clone wars.
