First time using Oil Pastels (sort of) || Paul Rubens

I do realism with oil pastels. So i thought id share some helpful tips. I love hearing your thoughts and when you discovered you could blend with your fingers! I use paper stumps of various sizes for blending, and thin paper stumps that i "scrape" the oil pastel on to add finer details. Or i just use a pencil. Using microfibre cloth or paper towel to clean pastels after every use prevents a sudden unwanted explosion of colour. Clean pastel = happy solid colour pastel. If youve got a section that is overworked and muddy, you can scrape it off and start again. I use a metal ruler for this 😄 I also use silicon brushes that potters use for moulding, i use them in blending also. I hate using overly textured paper. BUT it is good for blending, more tooth to hold the pigment. I also tape my work down all around the edges with washi tape. Holds the whole surface down making it easier for blending. And you have a beautiful clean border at the end. I hope you do more oil pastel works, it truly is such a fun medium. 😍

Also, when you say paper stump, do you mean those paper blending pencil things, or do you mean like a wad of paper? I'm hoping to do some more with this medium so I'll for sure be taking your advice ❤❤

@@staticwool Anytime! Yes those paper blending stump stick thingies, usually purchase them in like a packet of 5 or something like that. When you scrape away the medium the oil pastel does stain the paper however you can go over the top of it, depending on the colour on top, if you go a light one, it can still bleed through. I hope you pick those oil pastels up again! 😍

I really like oil pastels and it's really interesting to see them being used in a more 'comical' style🫰🏻 And the sheep knight looks so fluffy omg. I want a plushy of this little adorable character 😍✨

Yeah I think I was too scared to try a realistic look, but I'm still happy with how these turned out and I'm glad you like them too! 😊😊 Also the thought of a plush Sheep Knight is honestly so cute and I want one so bad ❤

If you want better color layering without them blending, i advice applying a coat of fixing spray between layers, it can be slow but it makes color blocking and values easier !! love pastels with your style ❤ (also a tip i like is that to clean the pastels, you can just rub the end in a twist on the foam that comes with the box)

I think of them kind of like crayons, if it’ll help just try to get rid of any pressure to be good with them if you haven’t used them before and have fun using oil pastels!

your gator reminds me so much of the main character from lil gator game. if you haven't played it, it's worth a try. it's very wholesome, very cute, and a quick game if you don't plan on 100%ing collectables. btw you inspired me recently to start a sketchbook! i'm mostly a digital artist, so going back to traditional art has really been a challenge, but i love it so far.

I had a pastels class in like freshman year of high school and it was terrible. The pastels irritated my skin, I hated how pastels just smudged around and blended together, it was so so bad but I didn’t switch out because I dunno????😭
