My first "survival" knife as a kid was a carbon steel chefs knife I picked up at a flea market for like $2, I beat that thing to hell and back for years until I got a buck sheath knife. I still have that old chefs knife and I would happily trust my life to it.

It is probably closer to the first bowie knife that was used in the infamous sand bar fight than most other knives sold as Bowie knives. In other words the long, straight single edged butcher knife as described by Rezin Bowie in a letter and one of Bowie's female relatives in a separate letter.

Got this knife a few weeks ago. I like the simplicity which shows that effective knives will always follow time tested shapes. Often, "combat knives" which were designed for _that_ task are overdesigned and simply bad to handle... AFAIK, the reason of these butcher knives being used in WW1 (especially by the french) was, that the military didn't have enough knives in stock for every soldier - so they simply issued the knives they could get from cutleries, makers and so on. In addition to that, CQC-weapons in WW1 were often improvised from every-day-gadgets.

I like this one a lot - might put it on the list. One thing that worries me a little. 1095 is a high carbon steel and designed exactly for the abuse you put it through. For the fact it dulled so quickly makes me worry about the quality of the heat treatment. HRC: 55 - 57 with 1095 should hold an edge much longer than a short chopping session. Perhaps with a scandi grind it would have held up better with the bushcraft tasks - but again if you want the meat cutting slice - you can't have it both ways. Food for thought.
@WeAllJuggleKnives
@WeAllJuggleKnives Жыл бұрын
Yeah it is not hardened as much as most 1095 knives would be. They must have wanted it to be really easy to resharpen in the field. It's more like a small machete.
@magritteetmoncouteau

I got one because I loved the design and it handled pretty well. Sadly the heat treatment was so bad, the tip would constantly bend and it couldn't hold an edge for very long... so I sold it.

And the sheath wasn't bad but the faux leather wasn't good for my use.

Yeah I noticed that batoing dulled mine quickly, I'm mainly going to reserve this for meat or bad guys. At least it was super fast to re-sharpen.

Great channel!! Revisited this now in 2024 from when I first saw it maybe nine yrs ago. My emotional pref, puppy love is for the big knives and machetes, and when I first saw ur machete collection I was inspired. Kukris' also a fav, Nepal makes great low cost blades, big ones, always a bargain. I make leather sheaths, mostly for machetes. Hobby. My attitude is for economy knives, always shop price driven, and machetes give a lot for a little money. Cheaper is more, or less is more. Saw machetes from ur chnl ten yrs ago, great education vids for newbies, starting the journey.

Ever have a knife that just speaks to you, where you see it and think that's one gorgeous knife? Well that one there does for me, don't know exactly why but it's the best looking knife I've ever seen (and I've got 130 in my own collection, let alone all knives I've ever laid eyes on). Yeah I've gotta get one of those.

Tony lopes design french knives makers ;yes during the First World War French soldiers received folding knives and butcher knives, to compensate for the absence of combat knives and some modified them !and this is why this cutler created this knife; in memory of these men who fought hand to hand in the blood and mud of the trenches!
