Statute of Limitations on Cases of family sexual violence needs to be removed
Sexual violence by family members take up to 10.9% of all reported sexual assault cases in Korea, and takes up to 36.5% of all reported cases involving minors. However, many of these cases are hushed up and victims' rights not supported because the crime occurs within the family's household.
Attempts by other members of the family to hide sexual abuse within the household, or members of the community expressing unbelief at victim's statements continue to stigmatize and isolate victims.
"Pursuit of prohibiting application of statute of limitations on domestic sexual abuse, sexual assault committed by family members have taken 25 years. I'm saddened that I couldn't speak for myself sooner, yet grateful that I can begin to share my story."
This is survivor withstood 9 years of sexual assault by her biological father, and overcame subsequent years of emotional turmoil oppressed to her by society.
We will be speaking with Ms. Youngseo Kim, an advocate speaking for victims of domestic sexual violence of minors.
