Love it-I’m 72, started road cycling again 3 years ago, ride 130 ish miles every week, have done 6,000 miles this year so far, dropped 20 lbs over 18 months, was only 158 lbs to start with at 5ft 9inches. You just have to keep going and doing what you love-life is too short to waste it.....

You just need to take a look at the very healthy and old people on the island of Ithaca who have nice healthy Mediterranean diets but are still very physically active. It not only keeps the body right but it also keeps the mind right for much longer. We didn't evolve to just sit around and get fat at a certain age. If there is a will and a need to survive then we will gain longevity by staying active in all the facets of our life.

Any time I'm in the gym and I see an 80 year old guy just starting to work out, or a very obese person in the first week, those are the people I'm most impressed by. Sure, there are legions of super-ripped beasts there, and they've put in a lot of hard work, but it takes tremendous courage to make those first steps when you've got some odds stacked.

Yes, like others commenting, I'm in better shape at 55 than I was 15 years ago. I'm consistently in the top 10% of mountain bike riders on downhill sections on trails around my town. However, I think you should avoid being overwhelmed by all that is in the video. Perfection is not necessary. You don't have to be a world-class athlete. You don't need EVERY spoke tightened. Start with three spokes. Eat well, sleep well, exercise - cardio and weights (functional strength helps avert injury). From that foundation, you can build toward happiness. Be more engaged in the world, better self-esteem, and stronger relationships. As Laird said at the beginning, start small - run to the end of the street EVERY day. Build that healthy habit and the others that follow.

When I was a teenager I used to imagine 30 yr olds as being "old." Now that I am in my early 30's not only do I see I was wrong, but i am in 1000 times much better shape than when i was a teenager. I grow more self aware every year and i can only imagine getting better and better in my 40's. Your body is an amazing tool. As long as you are able to break through mental barriers, the body is capable of taking you beyond your limits. The first time I ran a marathon I realized that we are so much more capable of what we think we can do. Take care of your body, it's the only place you have to live in. Be good to your body, and it will be good to you. Don't forget about your mental health as well. The physical and mental together are unstoppable. If you are reading this and you are someone who is struggling with your physical or mental health, don't give up. Where there's a will , there's a way. Good luck!!!

I dont drink, drug or use tobacco. The 3 years of abstinence from alcohol has been the hardest but it is totally worth it. Excellent message, and Laird is THE MAN, but there's still a flaw in the logic: BALANCE. While I agree that exercise is everything, a chronic behavior of overtraining and its maladaptive impacts on metabolism, as well as joint health are very real. You can't indefinitely MURDER your body without actual consequences, no matter how dialed your sleep and diet are. Laird himself had a complete hip replacement. Now, the argument could be that a hip replacement in your 50's was worth the sickest big wave surfing career of all time....However, middle 50's is YOUNG AS FUCK for a hip replacement! So there's a consequence to long term ultra heavy training. While I personally don't ever feel "happy" unless I'm suffering like hell in the mountains, I do think that a message of balance could be important here. To be healthy you don't have you be a professional athlete. All you really need is a foundation of physical activity, and a solid lifestyle. Even then, you can still get diabetes or cancer or both....In this respect I do think that the message of keeping your DRIVE and passion in life as a top priority is key.
@blaineedwards8078
@blaineedwards8078 3 жыл бұрын
Brother Russell, what an excellent, insightful and spot on commentary. My sole critique is that I think you may want to reconsider what someone of young Master Hamilton's caliber truly deems to be, "well-balanced" as compared to more common blokes like you and I. Obviously, Laird is a world class, elite, top-shelf athlete who lives according to a daily operational tempo that is more akin to a full-throttle, highly charged approach to life in general. I just can't see him taking a "lazy, do-nothing" day to lounge about the house, eating, watching Netflix, napping and just basically completely effing off. I work hard, I play hard, I enjoy staying active, but I truly value my downtime and if I want a day to just laze around, that is a joy as well. I just don't see people like Laird doing nothing at all and enjoying it every once in awhile. I think that is the big difference between people like him and just common folks like me.

Very true. Having worked out reasonably heavy most of my life (I'm 61) I'm having to adapt my training through having a dodgy hip. Still far fitter than most my age, but there's definitely a need for balance. Certainly as we get older.
@russman109
@russman109 3 жыл бұрын
@@blaineedwards8078 Agreed! Although, Michael Jordan was famous for spending entire days on the couch and not moving. I think that top level athletes do more "complete rest" than their social media campaigns let on. I just think also that we have a culture of "more is always better", and when it comes to hard training and human performance that is absolutely not true. In fact its detrimental. "Better" training is "better". Quality and intensity are key, and you cannot generate intensity without being properly rested. Most professional athletes partake in year "periodized" training, where they completely change the type of exercise, its intensity and duration throughout the year. For example, if you're about to race in the Tour de France, you'd be a complete moron if you went and did a 60 mile bike ride the day before it started. You want to be as rested as possible for that event. I see these messages of "train train train or else you're a pussy" to be not helpful for many people who follow guys like Laird, but who have no idea or education in what the foundations of exercise science really are.

I was a distance runner, marathoner, and triathlete in my younger days until I started my real career at 35. The demands of everyday life, family , and the job kind of killed that aspect of my life. I miss running a lot and at 67 I’m pretty much just reduced to long walks now due to lower back issues. Sometimes it’s not just mind over matter. Father Time takes its toll on all of us in different ways. My advice to you younger guys would be to keep on keeping on and don’t let your fitness slip away because once it’s gone you may not ever get it back.

Sometimes it IS mind over matter . . .but we make excuses. There are amazing new (and old) treaments for lower back pain. Dorn Method. Somatics, Etc. IF it was important, short of spinal disconnection, you CAN find a way. IF. . . it is imprtant to you. Me. I've had two broken backs, dozens of fractures over a 50 year period, BUT, I am still flexible and strong. It may also be a simple matter of CHOOSING which activities you wish to excel at now, rather that having the preconceptio of still wanting to run a marathon or 10 second 100m. Sometimes just being able get up of the floor in a fluid and strong motion is an achievement. (A surprisingly rare one if you watch.) But just being able to move your body how you wish, and to its fullest range of motion, is wonderful enough.

Thank you. I’ve just watched this great film and it has inspired me to keep going. I quit smoking and drinking 3 years ago and started road bicycle racing a year later. Unfortunately covid has put a stop to racing for the past 10 months, my last race was March 2020. It’s sometimes difficult when you struggle up a hill or when it takes a lot longer to recover than it used to when I was 20yrs old but I’m glad I got back to it. I’m so much happier in myself now than when I was drinking and smoking. It’s a great feeling to have no props and to be able to get a high from natural endorphins. I’m 43 yrs old. This film has helped put my mind at ease. Things change slightly when you get past 40 yrs old but I think a lot of it is in the mind, responsibilities, caring for elderly relatives, seeing people around you age etc. I think I will be watching this film many times to keep me inspired to keep going, keep fit, keep healthy and stay positive. Thanks again, great film. Mark. 💪👊🏻👍

I’m 62. After pushing myself to do some intense workouts recently, I was able to do some things I was unable do in my 30s. Rogan’s correct that it’s mental tiredness; I used to do triathlons & marathons, but just got mentally sick of those, so my workouts are entirely different now. I also started doing some other (non-exercise) things that are new to me, and that I never thought I could do. Struggle, mental activity, and novelty are all essential to staying young at heart.

54, l had pondered as a late teen, thinking about anti-aging. With this came research and commitment to staving aging off. People say l look in my early 40. This is living a hard life of work, working out and sports, being broken up more times than l care to think about. I date ladies in their 20’s and refuse to allow my brain to let the aging take over. Grow old gracefully, ya right, as they say in aviation, that’s a sucker hole. You have to deal with aging like your in a fight. Don’t give up, go right at it. Be well my dudes.

Still dating 20 year olds? Yeah age can be a state of mind BUT reality here is saying that trying to ‘prolong’ your youth by dating 30 year younger women, is first not something to ‘brag’ about at all and not going to make YOU feel any younger. And second it’s bizarre for you to think that dating 30 year younger women gets you some kind of award or something. It’s actually very immature and shows that you think that it’s perfectly normal when it’s NOT AT ALL normal. Why in the world would you think that you’ll have some meaningful relationship with a 20 year old? You sound silly and very immature as a 54 year old man but I guess you wouldn’t mind be called a ‘kid’ from the sound of it. No 20 year old wants to settle down with a 54 year old!! (Unless your filthy rich of course) That’s why you keep going from one to another cause they ain’t looking for that and obviously you are. It’s just gross man, grow up and do yourself a favor and find someone that’s near your age cause you’ll never be able to relate to a 20 year old enough to have her want to be with you for the rest of your life! Dating 20 year olds doesn’t keep you young minded, being a responsible mature adult that takes care of his family as well as being active in sports and in great physical shape keeps you young minded. Your Way to weird and bizarre for me.. and I’m in my mid 40’s so don’t say I don’t understand cause I still skate climb surf and snowboard. Playing the same sports when your older as you did when younger also keeps you young minded..so many ways to stay mentally young other than dating girls 30 years younger..smh 🤦🏻‍♂️🤷🏻

@@metanoiavision4365 Wow, a lot of thought put into your your reply and trying to shame me. No worries bruh. The thing about assumptions are just that. You don’t know me from Adam. I said 20’s not 20. I didn’t say l was proud about dating ladies in their 20’s. What l am proud of is raising two successful and good citizens on my on with no help from a deadbeat mother. Holding my own on a motocross track or mma mat with guys half my age is another. The fact that l did the work and was lucky with decent genes is something that l will never feel ashamed or weird about. Younger ladies are happy to hang out with me based solely on this and my frame. Nothing based on money or fame, get it? You are clearly a victim of postmodernism. Probably cheering when leathery old bags like Madonna or Demi-Moore are riding the 20 year old cock carrousel. If you look on any dating app, you will see an ocean of mid 40’s “cougars” acting as full time semen receptacle. All those episodes of sex and the city has conditioned you well. You have had your limitations set quite nicely for you by a feminist leaning society and your wife. Good luck with all that man.

Im 56 and surf my brains out swim a mile minimum if I dont surf. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately being an RN my time has been limited recently. Regardless I have had 2 major MI's and surviving my 1st at 44 yo was a miracle i cant explain. Short version the only person I knew at the hospital I drove myself to was an ER MD. He happened to be working. B/C I came in after surfing and didnt "look" like a heart attack victim I was told to wait. I knew if I waited another 10 minutes I was dead. My friend came out and took me back then to the cath lab just in time. I said if I survived Id do something helpful/useful. So at 49 I became an RN but immediately had MI number 2. OK- all this context not for praise or whatever ego centric nonsense we do to feel good about ourselves but to SCREAM at you men hitting your forties to dont think becuase you surf etc.. it cant happen to you, I appeared more fit than men half my age when i had my first MI. Please take care of yourself. And its not over until its over keep at it. Laird is a freak. Its easy to say well that guys a real outlier and its not realistic to be doing all he does in my 50' or 60' or 70's. I don't think that was the point of this video--to say you must run so many miles in order to be healthy when you age into your older years. Instead, it is to highlight the extreme opposite end. To show that you can do much more than what you think you are capable of as you age as opposed to what most people think of old age being. Of course balance is important, but far too many are in the opposite end of the spectrum than what is shown here and that is not healthy either.

You need to take this message to the nursing homes of the world. When your DHEA is low and you do this, you are going to feel like you were hit with a bus. This happens after 40. Maybe you can convince the sports teams of the world to hire players 75 years old because it's all in their head. Unless you can reverse aging, (which scientists are doing with NAD+, PQQ, Quercetin, & others) the body has physical limitations which thinking positively & motivational speeches won't change. Age does matter. You definitely will experience this in a multitude of ways when you get old. I do. If you don't hooray!

You guys are a complete inspiration to me. I have done mild exercise all my life , I always take the stairs, people always say I walk too fast, I got into a lazy state just before lock-down, that was in February March here in Europe.So I started a new regime I started doing Bur-pees , the first one nearly killed me.I mean I nearly threw up! I felt like an old man. I could not believe how unfit I had become. I started rowing regularly on a water rower doing HIT.5 minutes warm up followed by 3 x20 second HITs every other day. After 2 weeks I had progressed to 10 Bur-pees it was tough.I also started skipping that was even more hell. I was also Jogging and got it up to 8Km but then had pain from my IT band and had to stop that but kept up the rowing.Then a friend persuaded me to go swimming in the lake in November, she's been going for years.Air Temperature was around 12 Celsius and the water was probably around the same. I went regularly into December between 06:30 and 07:00 every morning the water temperature currently in December is around 8 Degrees and its about 2 degrees air-temp today.Listen the first time is a shock but after about the third time its easier. Its ALL in your mind. After the initial shock, which can take your breath away you just swim. I can stay in for about 4 or 5 minutes then I get out .Take a friend if you go alone take a swimmers Buoy with you to tow behind in case of cramp, my biggest fear.The strange thing is, its not cold when you get out you get a slight sensation like you you are burning, then another short swim and out again.Dry the hair, get a woolly hat on asap and then get dressed bring hot tea in the thermos.After you get your clothes on again and stand at the side of that lake watching a pair of swans lift off the water in the sunrise I can tell you I have never felt so alive in years. The effects were almost immediate , I almost stopped drinking coffee, I was wide awake all day, I could concentrate better, I had what seemed like boundless energy.Oh yeah and to the guys out there chuck your blue pills the cold puts lead in your pencil!!! If someone had said to me in January I'd be swimming in the lake in December I'd have said they were crazy.I even went with snow on the ground! I used to fear the cold after years of riding a motorcycle to work as a teenager with pain in my freezing hands. Check out Wim Hof the "Ice Man" that guy is onto something! Wish me Luck I am 64 in January 2021.

What I am finding at 56 is that much of the “I can’t” mentality comes from societal pressure. People expect that in your 50s it’s time to slow down. That occasionally creeps in to my mind but then when I think logically - there’s nothing preventing me from busting my butt. Point is, make sure you don’t let others, or society, convince you that you can’t be lean and sharp and strong. Do it. You can. You just have to aggressively set your goals and stick to them. I’m not ever going to stop until the good Lord tells me to - and if He tells me to then I’m good with that.

This is all certainly true, to a point, and I'm interested to see if you are still adapting this general attitude when you are 70, as I am. I believe that there is the point to where one needs to balance fairly extreme physical stress with the idea of preserving your body for future enjoyment in life. Can I do what I did 5 years ago physically? nope, not by a longshot. Am I still healthy, and fairly void of daily physical pain? Yes. There is, of course, a balance that for every one of us is best in regards to physical training and stress, but it is a line that is often abused, in the name of many things, most often ego. I for one plan to live as long as possible without enduring pain as a result of overstressing my physicality, and so far, it has served me well, accepting the fact that yes, I am growing old. To each their own of course, but I strongly recommend to those approaching my age to consider the fact that our bodies definitely have a limited ability to heal from over-abuse, and that to extend that limit may very well result in problems health wise and enjoyment of life wise later that were not worth the pain and abuse put on the body earlier in life, in the false hope of physical immortality. Not me. Im 45, disabled really messed up back and body plagued with injuries one after another but i work through them. 5 ft 9 210lbs, Not fat, not cut, been weight lifting for 17ish yrs and continuously making strides to better my health and my family every day . Eating and doing physical activity. I work out 3 to 5 times a week every week and do pull ups once a week. I walk about mile every day. I cant live without it. Making gains every month every year. Just hit 215 for 4 reps the other day and 16 sets of 7 on pull up bar. God willing if i live long I plan on being strong and physically fit as long as im able-Praise Jesus. To say I cant do it is a lie from the pits of hell. Dont believe that liar. You can if you do it. Doesent matter what you do as long as you do it. Gte with Jesus and you can do anything:)

This is the FAR end of the spectrum and obsessive. For the average person, find something physical and fun besides slogging at the gym, strength train (slog at the gym), balanced diet. Most of us don't have pools, ice baths, full gyms, personal trainers. It's not that hard, but as they mentioned, it's HABIT. That's the magic......HABIT.

Yes, you have to make exercise/being active a daily habit. And I agree it should be fun and about 30 minutes to an hour each day!

I was very active through my life. All while developing UC and that led to RA. Rotate cups, knees , wrist, hands, and ankles and hips are shot. Need knee and shoulder replacements but can't, so it's bone on bone for me. Neck and lower back is mostly fused together naturally. And lets not forget what my colon is doing. I went belly up 10 years ago. I walk when I can and I push through the pain. Yard work is my workout. Guess I just sitting here waiting for that big heart attack to strike me dead. It kills me when I see a fit older man out here doing like a young man like I use to. I ran circles around the younger ones in my early 50s and I was sick and full of pain then. I worked until I couldn't.

As a woman, this is my goal! I never want to resign myself to be immobile and decrepit. We are meant to move! I need to push myself harder though...off to the indoor rock climbing gym woot!

Great vid Laird, you have been very influential and rank in the top watermen of not only Hawai but the world. You are committed to helping people see and realise their potential. Bummer though that you missed Kelly in your tribute to the more senior sport champions. In my opinion I don't think any sport has had an 11 times world champion let alone the span of his influence.

46 here, just watching this as I'm hydrating and getting ready for my 3rd day snowboarding this week. I also climb, send it on mountain bikes, SUP, hike and love to lift. Find something you love, put in the work so you can do what you love. No motivation needed!
