Great topic. I love floppy flappy fishing shirts. Columbia and Patagonia make them for all of us. Long sleeve and cooling. What is worst than sun is sun and wind. I like the sticks that moisturize too. Found them skiing.

Big thumbs up on the fishing shirts. Most have great vents to keep the air flowing. Also, lots of big pockets.

I find the edges of clothing is where it burns the most. Like there's some reflection thing going on, so I suncream under the lip of clothing extra hard. Also I find some colours of sunglasses (blue lenses certainly) show up sunburn on skin before normal eyes. Often really good for noticing just in time that there's a missed spot. Often for me that's the bony top of the chest as the sun takes a peek down there.

Great video especially living in Florida. Have you done a video about what snacks you take on a tour?

That stick tip was awesome, gonna look for them! Works also in kayaking, as you don't get slippery paddle shaft! Go Darin, you are sunshade goddess! 😜

Trader Joe's sells a small one that is great too. And it has an even higher zinc content!

When my wife and I toured Arizona and Utah in the early 90's, we'd never been anywhere as hot and sunny before. We had the best sun lotion you could buy in England at the time, but it was no match for the Arizona sun. Our worst burns were the tops of our ears. I got really badly burned through a hole in my sock (due to a microwave/sock drying experiment gone wrong) which exposed a small patch of virgin white skin. I also got burned through the crochet backed gloves I was wearing. A nice lady we met took pity on us and gave us their super sun factor gazillion sun block. Then, as we rode into Flagstaff, it started snowing!

Thank you so much for a timely and very important reminder. I’m a newly retired 65 year old from New Zealand and we are just heading into our summer (and hopefully out of lock-down). In my youth a tan was healthy and I was constantly told to get out in the sun, even though I was a pale skinned red head. I now know it is only a matter of time before I have lumps carved out of my ears, nose and lips and look like Swiss cheese. Your tips are all great. I have hunted out a Halo headband (from California) to protect my bald head from sun burn through my helmet vents and to protect my ears and neck. I also wear a tube around my neck to pull up over my lips and nose. Yes, it looks odd and feels a bit hot, but I can’t afford any more sun damage. Along with gloves with full fingers I can then manage sun block just on my arms and legs. Stopping every hour to reapply means I can have a break and enjoy my surroundings! Love your vlog. I pass all of them to my partner (he has two years of work left to go) and use them as an example of how much fun we will have exploring back country gravel roads by bike.

One advantage of Velomobiles....being enclosed in a shell, I have no tan lines 😁 but the sun coming through the visor will get your chest ('cause your jersey is open to try & get cool 😒) 😮😀

We had some record breaking heat this summer. I use sunscreen but I guess the heat was too much and I got a heat rash on my arms. That was no fun. Once it went away I started wearing long sleeve UV protectant shirts with no sunscreen on my arms, made a huge difference. My problem is I love the sun. Our cold rainy winter months are depressing. I want to soak up as many sun rays as I can during our summer. One other thing, if you are like me and have thinning hair. Once it gets to a certain point, it no longer protects your scalp from sunburn. A bike helmet with lots of vent holes lets in way too much sunlight. I had a very interesting stripped sun burn on my balding head. Love your content!

Most sun screens break me out. I use the zink oxide cream for baby bottoms. Plus I use a buff and sun sleeves that I impregnate with with zink oxide since cloth doesn't provide 100% protection.

La la la, just waiting for lower Arizona to hit 60-75F to do my 4th tour and 1st non-e-bike tour. Going to do Phoenix area to Tucson and back. Should make for a good adventure KZbin video. Starting to get a collection of adventure bike videos now. Was going to do Phoenix to LA, but Cal jab rules have me staying away. Also that to long of a ride for a 1st time attempt unless I made it one way.

Not all clothing is good at blocking UV rays. Dyed and tightly woven fabrics work well, but a white t-shirt won't. If you're buying athletic clothing, look for a UPF rating.

Question: is it better for a sunscreen to be reflective or absorbative? This is all great advice! My father and his brother would go outside every weekend and get broiled bright red (it’s what guys did back then, didn’t know any better); one ended up with melanoma. We’re smarter now: sunscreen, cover up, sunglasses, yearly skin check from a dermatologist! Thanks Darin!🤘🏻

Reflective is better. So a mineral zinc or titanium oxide the other option is chemical sunscreen which has been shown to be carcinogenic. So try to avoid the “benzenes”. They’ve invented some better sheer zinc options if you’re afraid of it being too thick or white.

Skin cancer is no joke. I unfortunately got it at a fairly young age and now I am extremely cautious. I also see a dermatologist twice a year.

I got sunburned recently sitting under the shade of a tree without sunscreen for an entire day. Apparently there was enough sun coming through the shade to burn my shoulders. So, when I next went out into the sun, I slathered myself with sunscreen and ended up getting blisters only where the sunscreen was applied. I think I have to resign myself to wearing full UV protective clothing. I haven’t burned since the ‘80’s. Is there an age factor to this?

This is an off the wall question. Will those zinc sunscreen sticks melt in the heat? Some really good points. I like a buff around my neck for sun protection. Take care, Al

I was sun burnt in cloudy weather once. Had to go see GP and needed a week off work. I now wear sun scream even in Scotland when out and about even for a few hours. I have also been into hospital wards where the number of people with skin cancers is amazing. You do not see the serious cases in the streets they are far too sick to leave home. Be warned skin cancer is very serious indeed. Learn from other people’s lessons and cover up. SLIP SLOP SLAP as Aussies will say.
