Here is a recent video of some raw drilling. The goal in this was only to control and isolate the attacking arm. We will be incorporating other variables over time such as striking and utilizing nearby objects, etc. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4emoYmCjLKhgaM

As a professional on the field, this is spot on correct. First lesson on knife defense, expect to get cut, the goal is survival. Well done, nice video. The main problem is once the struggle for the knife begins, how to disarm. Distractions with blunt force to the head or groin etc is the way to go, the goal is how to disarm the weapon. Kimura lock is very effective. Take into account also the size and strength of the attacker before struggling close range. At first, always scout his strength, and attacking patterns by creating distance. Most attackers will perform their best attacks in the first 30 seconds. Also, the size of the knife matters when deciding how to disarm and block initial attacks. Without a doubt is a real mess to deal with.

"Maintaining distance" sounds like good advice but in reality if other has extreme intent of doing harm, maintaining distance is easier said than done. Somehow one has to only maintain one thing and that is presence of mind. Which also would be easier said than done because when the adrenaline dump kicks in, thinking can become disorientated & the fine motor movements shut down. Also the idea to "engage" with someone holding a knife sounds like someone who has seen too many Jet Li & other martial arts movies. Your advice is par excellence but in my view the best advice is from Tim Larkin of Target Focus Training. In TFT the assumption is always that he'll be fitter & stronger than you(so trying to 'control' the attacking arm can be ill advice) and that he has his buddies with him. TFT shows pics of people who were murdered who tried to 'defend'. I see parts in your clip where an immediate injury with explosiveness could be inflicted upon the attacker whereby one can take away or at least reduce his ability to be a danger. Trying to maintain distance could get you killed. Because if he is enraged or on meth or the like he can close distance in less than a second. My advice, though admittedly may also be easier said than done, is get an injury, the type of injury that would require medical attention like a crushed larynx or viciously foot stamp his ankle with full body weight & mass to incapacitate him giving you enough time to get the heck out of there. Trying to keep it real. Cheers from Australia PS I appreciate that you give intelligent real advice not the typical yahoo type of advice.
@staysafemartialarts3 жыл бұрын
Much love my Australian friend! Thank you for input. IMO distance will always be your best friend in knife situations. However when not an option, you are forced to engage. Being able to control the attacking arm is the first step to pause the threat. From there you have to immediately control your attacker by whatever means deems necessary in that situation. There is always the chance of someone else coming in (their friend for instance) which brings this to an entirely different level. Multiple attackers will be touched upon as well. And thank you for the kind words. Trying to keep this as straight forward as possible

Just a note, if he’s on meth, he’s not gonna be magically faster than he usually is. It makes people act speedy, but they’re not actually capable of some crazy feet they wouldn’t be able to physically do otherwise, in fact, they’re going to be physically, quite weak and slow, because even though they have a lot of energy, they likely haven’t slept eaten or drank for quite some time, and are very weak, although they can’t tell.

Exactly. Last week I was followed by a group of boys and even tho they were extremely young and didn't look the type to have knifes you still can't risk it, hence why I didn't start anything. Since then I've bought pepper spray which helps to create a distance gives you time to run because I'm clearly not trained well enough yet to have a knife or even a gun for that matter.

I think there isn't anything wrong with initially training against prearranged attacks e.g. repeated low thrust, and then gradually moving to something more chaotic where you don't know what type of thrust/attack is coming. I think that we should also realise that the attacker may also panic when you have have made contact with his arm and now you both are wrestling for the weapon. but I understand and appreciate looking at worst case scenario and like your line of thought on dealing with the attack. great work and thanks for the knowledge

Great vid man! I think one thing that you haven’t mentioned is that the first thing you are looking for one you spot a knife is to run as fast as you can. Never go out of you way and try to engage a physical altercation with someone that holds a knife. Apart from that I loved everything, you did a great job explaining how to handle the situation if you got no where to go.

@@staysafemartialarts How can you run if in extremely tight quarters where most of these situations happen. How can you run when extremely likely there are loved ones with you. Not always good advice. Sounds virtuous & wise but in my view only run if can quickly get to safety, or run to where you can find something to use as a barricade between you & the attacker.

@@glennrobinson7193 running is going to be the best way to stay safe in that situation. if family is with you they should have already been ready to run or already running. you have a point that these situations happen in close quarters which is why you train make it through it and safely get away

@@glennrobinson7193 that is the hard part and if running is not an option or loved ones involved, engaging may be your best option at that point
@glennrobinson71933 жыл бұрын
@@staysafemartialarts I would not advise anyone to "engage" i.e. try to deal with the tools (the knife and the arm/hand holding it). The real weapon is the brain & the intent in X's mind. To try and engage by wrestling with other's appendage is in my view suicide.TFT trains the student to get an injury like E.G. blinded eye or eyes by eye claw & gouge or crushed throat by web of hand or bone of fore-arm or fore-arm to side of neck with full body weight&rotation or blast knee with full body MASS & forward drive into groin followed by maybe break clavicles with fore-arm strike using full body weight. In knife situations a thumb INTO the eye pulling it out gets you the knee to groin. The knee to groin gets you the knock out shot. THESE aforementioned methods are by no means "engaging", it is finishing the threat by decapacitating him therefore DIS-engaging. Engaging/trying to deal with the TOOL(knife, arm holding it)can get you killed. Trying to wrestle, control opponent can get you killed as one has to assume he has mates with him, is stronger, fitter and more skilled & could be under the influence of ice or the like. Injury is the only way to go. You have a Duty of Care to teach your students in these WORST CASE scenarios to injure. You must only give advice that teaches student NOT to defend but to resort to OFFEND. No.1 Military law is best defence is offence.
@edgedcombatives5 ай бұрын
attack the weapon hand, deflect and run if possible. grabbing first is not the best option. If anyone is adamant on learning knife "defense" they should begin by learning a knife based martial art.

The untrained, frenzied attacker is a very different situation to a formal system that teaches knife vs knife combat. The untrained psycho killer almost always holds knife in rear hand and uses lead hand to post, push, grab and pull. I don't teach using knife in the lead hand as this is more like knife "sparring", not pure ambush violence.

I like what you’ve done. I watched another video where they emphasized gaining control of the arm he’s using to hold you against the wall. In example, maybe you would get both of your arms behind his shoulder, getting your body out of the line of attack (for a second) and working from there.
@timhuggins54083 ай бұрын
I totally agree with the principle of control and isolate the attacking arm, but have found that grabbing the knife arm with hands/fingers is very hard against a continuous frenzied attack. I teach the full two-arm hug grip of the knife arm from the Kalah system (Idan Abolnik).

Once upon a time I was selling ice cream in New York when some more particulars had been that it was a black housing project at somewhere in Queens. Then eventually one of the kids of it came over to tell me that some other kid had bought ice cream with money that he had stolen from his mother and also he had looked like he must have been about fourteen years old. Next I had told him that that money was already spent and then he got out his knife since anyone can see that he must have been the morals police since you can tell from because everyone knows that we can't have an ice cream vendor inciting such immorality at the welfare department housing complex at somewhere in Queens. And also he had looked more dangerous then the likes of him at some correctional center who may as well belong at somewhere in Kansas since he didn't come over by himself anyway and then the truck wouldn't start when I was trying to make my getaway after I first threw part of the loot up from because the wind had been blowing. Of course the morals police went chasing after the money and then I finally I got caught by the real police who came right over on a motorcycle with his badge and his uniform and also he didn't seem to be in the least bit concerned about this other part of it that the make-believe police must have had us outnumbered by about five to one at the scene. Instead he had asked me to come over to his office to fill out some police report form and next the caliphate of the new Ayatollah who are so concerned about everyone's morals also retaliated for all of this by breaking into the ice cream truck right in front of the office where they have the cop who patrols around on his motorcycle all the time but if I leave out the later developments then at least by the time it got done I ended up with the impression that for some reason the flock of the very underage case of it does not attack a police officer in uniform unless if maybe what is easier to tell is that sometimes the one who works the best around there is the black one in uniform and also the officer had a gun on his hip which could hardly be left out of it from if you were going to put all of this on a stage. And by now I tend to imagine that it must be a person who has been around a lot more than the bunch I ran into who would attack a uniformed police officer with a knife in any case or regardless or even supposing if you could put all of this at somewhere in England?
