Good video, good choices...and some trivia! That's me doing the burnout in the red C4. That was from a 1986 Drag Test I did on that car for Cars Illustrated magazine. Pretty sure it ran in Vette mag. as well. Had it for a week. Owned Fountain Ave and did OK on South Ave with it, and recorded the first ever 13 second TPI pass at E-Town. Returned to the Chevy press pool in Manhattan on a rollback...as usual.

Tony, as a c4 owner, I feel I need to defend her honor a bit here. Not live axle, it has a D36 or D44 IRS. Also, the manuals are not a T56. 84-88 was a 4 speed with a 2 speed overdrive, 89-96 was a German ZF6-6 speed. Front suspension is long arm short arm, albeit the whole car has transverse leaf springs. Sorry for the nerd corrections G! They’re still an amazing value, and a great track car and auto x monster. Check out the SCCA challenge car C4s!

If the budget allows $5000-$10000 a rebadged Holden Monaro/Commodore/Caprice as a Pontiac GTO/G8 GT or Chevrolet Caprice PPV is a great car to buy. They're LS powered, 6 speed transmissions, IRS, roomy, often they can be overlooked as hooligan cars in the right colors/wheels/exhausts, not so old that you have to restore or start with a shell, great brakes, ride/handling is excellent, very usable as a daily. Many 5th Gen Cámaro and CTS-V parts are in interchangeable.

I call shenanigans. I had one of those '76 Volares from new, and it started rusting the moment I drove it off the lot. Had a no-po 318 and a half-vinyl roof. I don't think you'll find one today north of the Mason-Dixon line, and not many south of it, that aren't rusted up to the door handles. If you leave it in your driveway for the afternoon and it suddenly starts to rain, it'll rust. Not worth your time and effort.

I've been a chevy guy all my life! C10, chevelle, Corvette, tahoe and suburban have all been in my line up but a friend came to me saying he had been storing a dakota in his airplane hanger for like 8 or 9 years. I go look at it and it's a 98 Dakota R/T club cab. Low miles, super in tact but dirty from sitting and needed a lot of work to get it road worthy. I picked it up and got it dialed in and absolutely love it! Bought it for $4000 and put a few grand in new brakes, suspension, steering components, wheels, lights and full body fluid flush. Everyday I get compliments on it and between my c10 and the Dakota I'm all smiles!!

Love these videos Tony and always believed a 4th gen Corvette is the best performance value on the planet as a starting point for a project. A couple points, Corvettes haven't had a "live axle" since 1962. And they were ZF 6 speeds starting in '89 and running through '96, not T-56s. And they are absolutely "real sports cars." They were undefeated for 3 years in SCCA Showroom Stock from '85-'87. Porsche and Lotus and everyone got so butthurt in fact that they had Corvettes banned from competition and they were forced to race against themselves in '88 and '89 in Corvette Challenge. And in 1990 Morrison Motorsports set multiple FIA World Land Speed Records that I believe still stand TO THIS DAY for production cars.

Excellent episode! I built a big block Volaré wagon about 18 years ago. Ran low 13s in the Quarter mile. Long Hauled Power Tour 2006 with it. Pro tip: a 68 B-body 8¾ rear was a bolt-in, as was the 727 transmission. Regrettably, I had to sell it in 2007. However, my current wagon is an 81 Pontiac A/G body with a 455 Olds in it. Power Tour Long Hauler and Drag Week survivor, it runs mid 12s. Another pro tip: the G-body platform came with almost every GM engine family, and there are (or were) swap kits for the rest of them, even Cadillac 500 V8s. Get 'em while you can!

I have several 73-77 a-bodies myself and think they're the best. Fortunately I bought them years ago when still cheap. I guess he's saying he wasn't able to find a good one for a reasonable price, so it didn't fit his criteria. But I still think they can be found in decent condition for a reasonable price, or a project for cheap. I think he didn't look hard enough. The G-body is not a bad choice, but not as good as the A-body. I'd put the G's in 2nd place, put the A-body in 1st, and kick out the pickup truck or the Volare :-) . I don't think a G-body Aerocoupe would be easy to find or could be bought cheaply if you did.

Tony, Don't forget about the 66-70 Buick Rivieras. The 63-65 are priced out. There are still some 71-73 boattails available for a good price. The 66 has a nailhead, but the 67-70 have the 430/455. And nearly all of them came with AC and power windows/seats. The Eldo/Toronado are FWD, so I'd pass on those. There isn't a lot of aftermarket support, but there are now some floor pans available. And the club support for them helps finding parts much easier than you'd think.

I’ve always liked the 73/77 GM A body. The problem with those they where orphan cars for so long that most rotted away and there’s not a lot of aftermarket support for sheet metal and interior. Think of how many where scraped in the late 80’s and 90’s when the “real” muscle cars started to make a comeback. One of my top 5 dream cars is a 73 chevelle or laguna. Also as far as cheap g’s go buy them NOW! and if you’re young and or on a budget don’t pass on a 4 door. Great video

I was looking for an C10 for my son for his first vehicle a couple years ago. The market was so hot we switched to looking for a manual C4 because they are so cheap. The manuals have the Dana 44 rear which is desirable. Found a 6 speed 89 with 60k that was garaged and maintained for $7500. We resealed the engine, wheels from a C5 18x9 all around, dewitt radiator, TPIS throttle body, 23 injectors with a chip tune, and a decent sound system. It is a great reliable ride that still draws attention. To get a C10 to that level it would have cost 2x more due to the initial purchase price. We have a daily 99 Grand Marquis. Parts are so cheap you can keep them running forever. Picked up another for $1000 that is in great shape. It will be another daily driver soon. Great cars.

Corvette IS NOT A LIFE AXLE CAR- it has independed rear suspension and 4 pot disc brakes in the rear since the 60s 3. Do not rip the Doug Nash overdrive trans out - its worth more with it and its just flat out cool.how many guys have a doug nash trans? 4. If you want something that feels more vintage than a c4 get a C3 (75-82) - you can still find running examples for under 5k Edelbrock sells a preformance package for 3 grand that yealds 410hp

In your first installment, I was thinking C4 Corvette, and it is nice to see that you included it, Tony! I also thought of G body GM's, as they're the last gasp of RWD carb'd engines that, although they didn't make lots of power, are a great entry level muscle car that is affordable. By '88, that platform and technology was so archaic, but I liked the old school (though undoubtedly a GM cost cutting thing) thing that they had going. I owned an '84 Cutlass as my first car in 1998 and the 305 is truly gutless, but sounds incredible with a dual exhaust. Another suggestion that I have is the 1989 to 1995 Thunderbird Super Coupes, which still seem to go way below the radar, for some reason. Supercharged V6, but with a ridiculous amount of low end torque, and it is a simple supercharger pulley swap and with a tune and gears, is a fast and fun car, and you get the 8.8 Trak-Lok rear end, factory, too.

Working on getting an 81 el camino with a 350sb/2004r combo from a good friend. He wants 1000 for the car. It also comes with 4 eye malibu front clip power doors, and, dash column/harness. Plus for 600, vortec heads, aluminum intake, lunati cam, rad, distributor, stamp steel roller tips, and headers. You can say it's a good deal. If you can find one for a good deal, get it!

My mom had a Dodge Aspen when I was like 12. It was baby blue with white vinyl interior, t-tops, and either a 318 or 360 automatic on the floor. I've wanted to find another one since I was old enough to drive. I've only seen one Aspen in area in years and it was like $8,000. My friend in high school had a Volare with a slant 6. It was cool too. I would love to have it now with gas prices

If you live anywhere where there is rust, STAY AWAY FROM THE T TOP CARS. They all rot out, and they all leak. Unless youre prepared to literally replace the entire roof a section at a time, go for a hard top. Also, only the 83/84 hurst olds cutlass' had the lightning rods. 84 could get the 200r4 so it'd have an extra rod i think. 85-88 were 442s, not hursts so they got the normal shifters. The 78 and 79 w30 hurst/olds had the hurst dual gate shifter and the only g body (technically still called an A body by gm until 1981, and g bodies went to metric fasteners in 1983ish) that came factory with a gasoline 350 engine, the 2nd to last year for the oldsmobile 350. Also in 1980/1981 you could get a monte with the carbed 175/150hp four/two barrel turbo buick v6.

I picked up a 89 Dakota std cab 8ft bed rust free under 95k on it dirt cheap, been working on it a little at a time while using it when I need a truck. Just did ball joints, tie rods, thru a new rack in it although the old one worked fine it leaked when it sat. I put a nice sound system out of left over stuff I've had since my early 20's in it ( I'm 54 now). I want to V8 swap it bad, been trying to find a 360 Magnum. I am not sure on what will work yet as I thought I need a obd1 motor which I haven't seen, 318 is all I can find in obd1

My top 5 cheap muscle cars: 78-88 A/G-bodies - just great cars, cheap, and good all around cars, totally agree with Tony here. 3rd Gen Camaros - because the 2nd gens have gone way up and you can still get a manual trans/V8 one cheap 97-00 Dakota R/T's, - 360 with trick suspension, special frame, 17" wheels, performance gears, etc. Easy to build up the Magnum 360 and just better than the 1st gens in every way, way underappreciated. Get them before they take off in value. Foxbody Thunderbirds - basically a longer wheelbase mustang, and dirt cheap still while the mustangs have taken in price. 94-96 - Gm B-bodies, with the LT1. Especially the Road Master. Great cars, and only need a gear change to really wake them up. Easily tuned, tons of parts available, and can still be bought inexpensively. I would avoid the wagons and get the sedan. Honorable mentions: 80's Turbo mopars - just a ton of fun - watch out for rust. Try to get a TII Daytona or a Omni GLH for little rippers. Or a turbo minivan if you have a sense of humor. Mid 60's off brand fullsize cars - I have seen a ton of real decent mid 60's full size cars that were nice for sale cheap! Delta and Delmont Olds, Wildcats and Lesabre Buicks, Catalina and Star Chief Pontiacs (or if you are in Canada - the real bargains are the Parisiennes, especially Custom Sports and Grandes), Newports and Windsor Chryslers, and fullsize Dodge Monacos and Plymouth Fury's, Ford Galaxies, etc. All with big block power. Seen lots of very decent cars recently for cheap. You won't get an Impala, 300 Letter Series, or similar for cheap, but the same car with lesser trim, and without the top engines are still out there. If you want real cheap, get a 4 door. Pretty much any 49-52 Chevy, Pontiac, Ford, Plymouth, Dodge, etc. Basically the lower line cars. Most can be made to look cool easily, and will run at highway speed happily, but not much more. Unless you are going to do an engine swap though, don't expect to win any drag races. The 53-54's and Senior models are already climbing in price and no longer can be considered cheap, and the 48 and earlier vehicles are pricing themselves out of contention in general. You can still get these cars really cheap for good solid examples. Some of the cars on Tony's list that I don't agree with: Mopar F-bodies - nah, junk. Get the B body instead. Way better car all around, and tend to have less rust issues. Magnums look mean, especially if you find a XE or GT, and could be had with big block power for cheap still. Or you might find a mid 70's Road Runner Fury for cheap. Slow as hell but looks cool. C4 corvette - this is a little to expensive still to be considered cheap unless you get a complete turd. Decent ones early ones are pulling well over $5k, and nice ones are getting twice that pretty easy. Whats wierd is that recently I have been seeing late 70's C3 corvettes for very little money. Who knows if they have a frame left though. 73-77 A-bodies - You can still find decent 73-77 A-bodies for little money if you look around. I just saw a ratty but running 77' Monte Carlo for $1500.

G bodies are starting to sky rocket. They are on the heels of the 3rd Gen F-bodies. You want a clean, rust free car? Doesn't matter which one, you're now well north of 10k. Specialty model? (442, Hurst, SS, or even a low mileage T-topped Cutlass Salon - 20k

I'm hearing this correct? You're saying the C4 has live axle and dual trailing arm suspension in the rear, and it's not refined? Last I checked under my '84 Corvette it didn't have a live axle, but independent suspension. And it's surprisingly refined. They handle great. Really great suspension

I got a C4 last year out of pure luck! You should have seen the scene I bought it from it was like out of a movie haha. I love "characters" in real life but that's another story. It's deep dark green I believe not original color. 84 the worst year, worst engine, but I finally got it running really good after adjusting the TPS sensor and putting new plug wires and plugs. The suspension is stiff and I don't quite fit comfortably in it at 6' tall my head hits the roof bar if I sit straight up but man what an awesome car and I got such a good deal on it right before the price surges. I always liked the C5 more and thought the C4 was kind of ugly compared to it, but in person it looks so good, in pictures it looks bigger, it's really pretty small, and now I'm starting to like it more than the C5 because it just has so much glass and it's so low to the ground and more race car like than pretty much all the other corvettes, very wide and low and stiff susp and fast steering. The thing feels like a fine tuned machine and is very rewarding to drive, except when I take my eyes off the road. You know how with normal cars you can sort of look down for a while and the car just stays in it's lane somehow? I've learned that that is not by accident, these cars are designed amazingly to be able to do that and I appreciate it so much more now that I know what it's like to drive this corvette. The steering feels like it's on edge, like it always wants to turn one way or the other if you give it the chance. It's hard to explain, it doesn't actually pull to the side but the most minute steering wheel change will throw you across the road so you really have to pay attention and keep your eyes on the road at all times, I'm lucky I didn't crash already, just looking down at the radio for 5 seconds and being on the other side of the road multiple times now. No airbag either. But when you ARE paying attention, the steering and feedback and turning is incredibly satisfying, it's like perfect.

The 84 has the stiffest suspension of the c4s and if you ever look at a side profile view you'll notice how similar the c5 and c6 look to the c4. You should also look at how similar a make supra looks like a c4 and how similar the mk4 looks like a c5. You should note that the c5 was supposed to originally release in '93.

Great vid and definitely funny. In the top 3 I must say 1964-67 GM A bodies are still available decent priced $5-$8k. Tempest, Lemans, Olds F-85 ect. Had a chance at over 7 driving good body examples over the last 5 years for $8500 or less. Many still out there as well. Lotta great options for them as well. 😉 We have two already so.

73-77 A-body and 78-87 G-body would be a tie. I bought a 1977 442 for $6500 last summer. 73K original miles. Doesn't need much. I've probably spent around $600 on an interior and I can drive it anywhere! Don't throw out the Colonnade just yet!
