We have to also keep in mind that the efficiency of the steamdeck isn't fully from the OS. Valve's custom SOC from AMD is very power efficient and gaming focused chip. Other manufacturers are just using laptop SOCs. Valve has the money to throw at AMD for a custom solution while others do not.

@@djfresh826 Correct, but mind you the benefits of SteamOS aren't just limited to power efficiency, there's also UI. Gaming Mode and not needing to deal with the Desktop Environment right out of the box is huge. I think that was the biggest driver of the Steam Deck's success.

The chip is actually made for a very different kind of devices (advertisement displays IIRC). Valve/AMD are basically just disabling the party Valve doesn't need (through laser). One of the main advantage of the Steam Deck is also one of its weakest points: the CPU isn't powerful enough for some games, but it allows the chip to use a lot less power than 6 or 8 cores during idle. Plus you might add the GPU being able to go to 667 MHz at lowest (vs 800 than the SD Oled chip) and the fact that it uses the slightly obsolete but yet good enough PCI-E 3.0 interface for the internal storage. And, last but not least, most chips are able to get a good efficiency improvement from undervolting.

I want a steam deck-esque controller so bad. I have nerve damage in my right hand and the flexibility of the deck's controls with Steam input has let me play games so much better. Love that they just handed me the tools to make control schemes work, would be great to have at my PC too. Valve rules.

The Steam Deck is only "underpowered" if you compare it to other devices running at much higher wattages, which tanks battery life. With the deck you get perfect balance of performance to battery life, as well as an absolutely kick ass screen.

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of hardware manufacturers, like Acer and Dell/Alienware (we know Alienware was working on a handheld PC a while back) were working on their own handheld PCs, but they've been holding off until the official release of SteamOS 3.x. And before you mention Asus, MSI, and Lenovo, they were probably waiting too, but they got tired of waiting and decided to go with Windows. "Windows has it's problems, but it's available today and SteamOS isn't" was probably their logic. Remember, these companies spent a lot of money on these devices and they needed to recoup these losses at some point. They couldn't wait indefinitely.

Depending on price the Legion Go is brillant as a laptop replacement its a mini gaming station in a handheld shape but the steamdeck is by the best hand-held its really that good feels like what the switch two will be.

I think this only makes sense if Value wants to give up their hardware sales and just make money from the software. The whole reason people buy a Steam Deck over the other brands is Steam and the ease of use. Once it’s not unique anymore and EVERYBODY has access to Steam everyone will just buy the more powerful handhelds.

IMO, it makes more sense for valve to make a low end price point steam deck that the others cant due to being able to subsidize it. they should just let others handle anything higher end, because theyre not in the market of making yearly iterations of the steam deck, because valve specifically has an incentive to not constantly move the low bar for performance for devs to optimize to. a yearly interative device would ruin this dynamic.

Valve may be getting into the console business because Steam is rising in popularity with PC's and Steamdeck and now that Sony has cornered the console market, there's a huge player base who don't want to use Playstation, but also no longer want an Xbox because they see the brand as being dead. Valve could get that player base, but those players either can't afford a PC or don't want to deal with a PC so by releasing a console, they can pull those players into their marketplace. Still offer the Xbox app and Game Pass, but also the huge Steam library all without having to deal with any of the headaches of PC gaming. Valve is definitely going to be eating a big chunk of the cost of each console, but so did every other company who got into the console market for many many years. That's just the cost of doing business in that space.

I want a handheld so bad but the Steam Deck not having Fortnite is a dealbreaker. But I might get a Retroid Pocket 5 soon and that plays Fortnite no problem. I think Valve has a much bigger Long game besides just handheld. Don’t get me wrong. I like windows, however, as a gamer if you gave me a software program that games well for me and would get rid of the need of a bloated program that slows things down of course I would want that to be the only program in my home. At least from a gamer standpoint. I think at some point Valve is going to release a steam OS capable of replacing windows at least for some.

their master plan is to repeat the same strategy over as round 1 but with stronger hardware and to fail due to the same flaws because they won't put in the work to accomplish it. Valve can NEVER take over the console market without becoming a true console in and of itself. The FACT that it has too huge of a potential library of games to own and that won't run on linux, don't have controller support (or at least not preconfigured to work with any old controller that windows can pick up and use) is a major factor. Nor the quality control to ensure that the game will run perfectly and not crash easily is another flaw. Those things just complicate the idea of becoming a console experience too much to replace it. Besides pc hardware isn't becoming smaller and producing less heat, its actually the opposite these days. Hence why its dubbed "uber space heater generation" And the FACT that anyone can run steam os on a pc and make their own takes away the reason to buy a prebuilt steambox. Its just a prebuilt pc (just with less flexibility for upgrades)
