Jaime and I demonstrate how to use the STEC 3100 for VFR maneuvers/flight, how the envelope protection feature works and how the straight/level function can keep a pilot safe. We then fly to Clow International Airport (1C5) in Bolingbrook, Illinois for breakfast/to meet a friend.

Wow, that neighborhood was packed in worse than the Northeast here! I'd lose my mind living that close to people - waaay too much drama for me! The entire city of Worcester over here in MA is like that, only most buildings are well over 100 years old, with alot of 3-deckers mixed in. People there complain about KORH all the time - it's a wonder it's still open. I wouldn't mind living in that house at the end of the runway there, though - you must've been 50' above its roof. 😁 That "level" feature has to be the best thing I've ever seen. I've watched alot of KZbin vids about tragic ends to VFR into IMC - that one feature would've saved all their lives! I can't wrap my head around how powerful the electronics are today. Good stuff! Great info, Kevin! And great radio work as always, Jamie. 👍 Now I've got the word "Clow" repeating in my head endlessly - I'll be saying it the rest of the day as I work ... 🤣

I can't wait till my nearest neighbor has a hard time hearing my shotgun go off from the back porch. :) A LOT of lives would have been saved in aviation if everyone had the STEC 3100 and used it appropriately. Glad it's here now and we have it....loving it. Ha ha....Clow, Clow, Clow, Clow

One thing that people who haven't used a radio ("two way" as it is known) very much is how you develop the ability to tune out a lot of the traffic. I worked a career where there was a radio on my belt every time I walked out the back door of the ranger station. I could talk to others face to face, observe, record, analyze, do manual labor and a number of other tasks and have the radio going all the time. My brain could distinguish what I needed to hear from the majority of the traffic I didn't need to hear. Sometimes I had to work 6 day weeks at 12 or more hours per day, which required being able to power nap for a half hour during lunch. The radio would be on the whole time and I would sort of hear it. If something came over the air that concerned me or someone called me I would wake up in an instant and respond to incidents within a few seconds. My ride alongs would ask how I could do this. I'm not sure, but I think it is just exposure to the situation and practice.

There are countless things to love about these two and this channel. Jamie and Kevin represent fun, quality time together and a love for aviation. Jamie is a stunning and fun example of what all pilots would love to have riding right seat. Kevin is a great pilot, with a touch of southern charm and handsome looks, (according to my wife), who has become as big of a fan of the channel as I am. Just a great couple, that everyone would like to have as friends. Plus, you HAVE to like and respect a man who has a beloved, favorite hat and wears it with affection. Clean, dirty, crisp or tattered...same hat. Now, he may have a newer “dress” version, for special occasions and after six, but likely not. This clearly shows a genuine, “what you see, is what you get” guy, who doesn’t try to impress anyone and always goes at his own pace. The right side visor is proof of that, lol! But this is what I love about these two. They represent something we can all relate to a laugh about and things we admire and aspire to. Just my thoughts and another big “thank you !” to Kevin and Jamie, for making me smile with each video. Safe skies guys ! 🇺🇸🛫

nice one. that 360 with the vs glued on zero made me want to tap the glass to see if it was stuck. cool split screen. that saratoga was a real mess. summer day, dwindling light, temp/ dewpoint spread closes and bang its no longer haze its IFR. i was taught wandering into IFR that if you’re trimmed right and disoriented try letting go and see if it will fly. or bring throttle to zero and trim all the way back and you just might survive the crash!

Thanks Brian! I've flown with a few different autopilots but I'm really amazed at how well the 3100 nails things. I've heard the same method you described being recommended if in serious trouble...especially in 172/182/pa28 type airframes. Honestly the best method is to get a capable autopilot. :)

Thank you, Kevin and Jamie. Great video as usual. In my first comment I wrote on one of your first Videos I watched of yours.I wrote about a father and daughter who flew off of Nantucket ,who I flew With many times. I was always impressed with her professionalism. Taking my luggage out to The plane. Her captain’s uniform and flying in December from new York to Nantucket in the Dark with what she said was ice breaking off of the wings. I never really appreciated Her knowledge and her ability until this video.I wish I knew what kind of plane it was. The only thing I knew It was a twin and had a few seats in back. After watching your video I recall her voice being Calm over the radio.. I was nervous but she did not appear to be nervous at all.I will always remember the noise of the ice, the flight being a little bouncy and her seeming to enjoy how she could light up the runway by keying her mic. It was like let there be light.and her being so calm. Again thank you for the memories. It would be very educational if you could take us up for a short night flight. Thank you for showing us breakfast. Sincerely B.R.

You're welcome Bill....glad to take you back to fond memories! Sounds like she was a great pilot. I'm guessing based on the description that she was flying Cessna 402's? We are due a night flight....haven't made a night video since our flight into MDW I think. :)

The more you show about that 3100, the more impressive it gets ! Love the demos and explanations on this video. The precision of the digital vs rate-based (like the older S-TEC 55) attitude sensors is evident. I like the fact that you can also have it connected to an external servo, for a backup. Definitely has the G600 beat in several areas. Any pilot who gets disoriented, would give 20k JUST for the “level” feature !

I soloed at Clow in 1980, it was in the middle of nowhere back then. You should drop in, or even drive over, for the fly-In, Cavalcade of Planes on the first weekend of June (Google it). We used to meet up for breakfast at Charlie's (Clow's restaurant) every few Sunday mornings for many years. I'll add to the flying over water (Lake Michigan) at night. I once had 2 or 3 drinks within a little less than an hour before I took off to fly over the south end of the lake, at about the same time I hit 4000' I felt drunk. Lesson learned real quick, I turned around and back to Mdw never to do that again. Ever hear I'd rather be on the ground wishing I was flying than flying and wishing I was on the ground, yeah, like that. Be nice if you fix Jamie's sun visor like you keep promising. Maybe we should start a GoFundMe and take care of it ourselves.

Hard to imagine that area not all grown up. Guess I know of a lot of places back where I grew up that are the same way. I'll have to look up that fly-in and try to get it on the calendar. I see single engines fly over the lake day and night...much braver than me. That water is way too cold...even in the summer. 2 people in a Comanche perished this year crossing with an engine failure in the middle. I've had new Rosen Sun Visors sitting in the box for months. I'm not legally allowed to do it...my shop (who ran out of time last time) said they will do it in a couple weeks. Can't wait.

Amazing tech you have there on the 310! Flight envelope protection and an impressive autopilot you’d normally only see in an Airbus etc. When I used to fly all I had was a small grey scale portable battery powered Garmin GPS and autopilot was me going ‘oh crap I’ve gained 100ft, correct’

It really is amazing Peter! I've flown 99% of my flights in the past 20 years without an autopilot and I can promise, I'd never want to go back after flying the past several months with the 3100. I am so much more safer and less fatigued after a long flight....love it. Never would have thought we'd have something like this in an old bird like mine. :)

I guess it is 20 years this week? Seems a lot less than that. Many a pilot has gotten themselves in a bad position and an autopilot like this one would go a long way to saving their lives.

The guy was a multi millionaire flying a newer Saratoga. Shouldn't that plane have had auto pilot? Word on the street is the Clintons had him killed so hilliary could slide into the senate seat that was to open up instead of him. Boob Sweat!!!. Oh, sorry, I have terrets.

Very nice video explaining the flight envelope and auto pilot. Garmin may be the best selling A/P but I love your STEC 3100. You are absolutely right about a VFR pilot flying at night over water. I believe the famous individual you referred to was flying a Piper Saratoga which is a fast airplane. He used terrible judgement in even attempting the flight at night. He always flew with an instructor pilot but on that occasion became over confident to his detriment.

Glad you enjoyed it James! I've flown behind a Garmin, Bendix, Cessna and Century autopilots and nothing has come close to the capability and stability of this 3100. :) Just wish more planes had ones like this one that can really help keep people safe when they get in trouble. I remember watching a really well done documentary on the entire thing...such a needless loss.

Excellent tutorial of the autopilot Kevin and I agree with you 100% that if you're not Instrument Rating, don't fly over large bodies of water at night. Nice to see Jamie in the right seat again, but Jamie, you need to put on your shoulder harness ... just some gentle fatherly advice.

I have the same thing going on. Wife stopped flying with me when we hit some minor turbulence about 6 years back. I needed her for a taxi test to help me with something and I had to promise her on penalty of divorce that we wouldn't take off as we headed down the runway. Wish I could get her in the air with me again. You have no idea how lucky you all are who get to fly with your spousal unit.
@310Pilot
@310Pilot 5 жыл бұрын
I agree Bobby...it is comforting to know that if something happens to me she can get down safely. With this autopilot and GPS, after just one demonstration she was able to do it herself. Pretty cool...it should be done by next Tuesday. We will continue to fine tune things but they don't need a full PPL in order to get down safely. :) Kevin....I love love love that she enjoying sharing aviation with me. That would be tough if she didn't. Maybe she will come back around.

Great informative video as usual Kevin, love the fact that Jamie loves to fly with you and makes a great copilot. My wife also loves to fly, took her up on our first date 16 years ago. BTW having a beautiful partner I think has made BaronPilot do an upgrade too, and she seems to be an active passenger that's into flying.
