From Wikipeida : he Empty Fort Strategy is the 32nd of the Chinese Thirty-Six Stratagems. The strategy involves using reverse psychology (and luck) to deceive the enemy into thinking that an empty fort is full of traps and ambushes, and therefore retreat. This tactic is best known for being used by the Three Kingdoms period strategist Zhuge Liang in a fictitious account in Luo Guanzhong's historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Sima Yi actually knew it was just a strategy and there was no ambush but he just used this as an excuse in order not to kill Zhuge Liang. Because if he had gotten rid of Zhuge Liang, the Cao Wei would no more have a use for him and could get rid of him afterwards; and he was afraid of this. And Zhuge Liang knew his intentions and didn't think a man like Sima Yi would fall for this strategy, though he knew he would pretend to fall for it. Brilliant strategies by both sides.

There is a theory that Sima Yi knew very well that there was actually no ambush within the city, but he purposefully retreated to keep Zhuge Liang alive. At the time of this Shu invasion, the entire Wei court, including all ruling Cao family were scared and suspicious of Sima Yi. Despite their fear for Sima Yi's incredible skill and hunger for power, they had to employ him to fend off Zhuge Liang because he was the only match for him. Sima Yi, knowing that he only has military power because Zhuge Liang was alive, didnt want to actually kill Zhuge Liang as Wei would not have any need to keep the dangerous Sima Yi around anymore. At that point in the war, it was clear that the Shu forces had already lost. Sima Yi kept Zhuge Liang alive because he knew that Zhuge would come back one day (which he did), thus requiring the Cao family to keep Sima Yi in power.

This is a political mind game instead of a military strategy. Both Sima and Zhuge knew this: As long as Zhuge and Shu Army lives and continue to be a threat to Wei, Sima can keep his status and power and of course keep his head on the shoulders. From Cao Cao to Cao Pi to Cao Rui, the whole Cao's had never fully trusted Sima Yi but they still had to entrust him with military command because of his talents and because he was the only one capable of facing Zhuge. That's in my opinion the real message exchanged between the two in this scene and why Sima insisted on the retreat when they clearly outnumbered the Shu. I really like how this was presented in this scene. Zhuge Liang looks so exhausted yet was still trying everything he can.

Nah. Empty fort strategy was previously successfully used by cao cao against lu bu and by zhao yun during the han zhong campaign. Even after shu fell, wu continued resisting for another 30ish years so sima yi would ABSOLUTELY be needed. Cao rui historically respected sima yi a lot. And lets not forget that sima clan stayed in good graces even after deng ai conquered shu.

The last sentence is the most important of why Sima Yi retreated. Zhuge Liang says that Sima Yi knows him well and if he were Sima Yi he would not retreated. Then why Sima Yi retreated? Its because he knows that its not a trap since he understood Zhuge Liang and if he were to attack, it will proof disadvantageous to his "real plan" instead. The real plan is to rise power in Wei Court, if he kills Zhuge Liang now, he would hardly rise in power because of Cao Cao relatives and other generals distrust, in fact they would get rid of Sima once Zhuge dies. He suceeded on gaining the trust of Cao Cao and Cao Pi (They don't trully trust him, but without him they can't fight against Zhuge Liang. Cao Cao knew Sima Yi is an ambitious person, he already warned Cao Pi about the danger of Sima) which he used to establish power for himself in the court, later he feign illness and usurp the Cao family by surprise. Later Sima Yi completely lays path to establish the Jin Dynasty for his descendants.

Indeed, Sima Yi concerns more of his future. Sima Yi is the only one that capable enough in Wei court to face Shu Han threats (in this case, Zhuge Liang). If he eliminated Zhuge Liang too early, he will be eliminated in the end by Cao family as he will be useless later on. So Sima Yi intended to prolong the war (at least untill one of them, either him or Zhuge Liang died) to ensure his survival in the court. Zhuge Liang himeself could be aware of this and "helped" him to prolong the war (i mean sarcastically, as his task was only defending and prefer attacking when the commander was not a capable man like Cao Zhen)

In reality : 1. Sima Yi was not in Jieting but in Wancheng, so this empty fort strategy vs sima yi was just a fiction. 2. Sima Yi only engaged Zhuge Liang in battle after 230. 3. During his northern campaign Zhuge Liang mostly engaged against Cao Zhen, and his campaign always failed. 4.After Chao Zhen dead , Sima Yi took over, and defeated Zhuge Liang in his 4th Northern Campaign. 5. Zhuge Liang fell critically ill during the Battle of Wuzhang -4th campaign vs Sima Yi , he attempted to extend his lifespan by 12 years through a ritual. However, he failed when the ritual was disrupted by Wei Yan, who rushed in to warn him about the enemy's advance, this was the cause Zhuge "tricked" Wei Yan.

Well, as many have already pointed out, this whole moment between them was fictional in history and was simply done for the sake of the novel, but it is still very interesting nonetheless. With that said, whether it was an ambush or not (which it wasn’t) was actually irrelevant to Sima Yi, who probably could have handled it even if it was. The point is that Sima Yi saw Zhuge Liang was clearly placing himself out there in the open and Sima Yi didn’t want him to die or be captured just yet (doing so would swiftly end the war). You see, Sima Yi still needed this war to go on longer because it was giving him more influence back at home. The Cao Wei Emperor, Cao Rui, knew that Sima Yi had been accumulating more and more power over the years ever since he had served his father and grandfather (Cao Pi and Cao Cao respectively). Sima Yi was said to be a genius and he deserved every promotion he got, but his ambitious rise in the court was starting to pose a threat and other court officials wanted to strip him of his powers (basically force him into retirement before he could grow too influential). However, while this was all happening, the famous Zhuge Liang was leading a major military campaign against them and this was becoming a serious threat to their empire. The best military official that the Cao Wei Empire had whom they knew was the only chance they had at stopping Zhuge Liang was, of course, Sima Yi. So by necessity, they had to put Sima Yi in charge of defending against Zhuge Liang and they would also have to grant him more authority to do so, especially as the war went on and called for more troops. Both of these two men here knew that if Zhuge Liang were ever allowed to be killed or captured in battle at this point in the war, Emperor Cao Rui would dismiss Sima Yi of his military duties and essentially put him into early retirement. Zhuge Liang used this knowledge to hold this fort with no backup, knowing that he couldn’t outmaneuver Sima Yi, but Sima Yi still needed more time to consolidate influence amongst all the military and state officials back home. The show doesn’t go as in depth as the book does and it cuts out quite a few characters, but I think it’s still quite good in my opinion and worthy of watching. I have only ever seen this strategy to work out in Three Kingdoms Total War when @Serious Trivia used the towers of the empty fort to "ambush" with only Zhao Yun (Romance mode). There was no musical instrument though.

with the information given. Sima yi made the right call. He didn't lose a single man. Since he wasn't his own command and had to constantly given orders from the cao family he made the right call. Now if he was a king like cao cao I think he would've gambled like cao cao. You can take risks others can't cuz you the boss but also you bear all responsibility (red cliffs).

May be sima yi knows something that no one else knew. He averted the biggest disaster to be fallen upon himself. It is very ancient history no one knows accurately. Sima Yi isn't dump and Zhu certainly wasn't playing Zither alone in an empty city with no one else. Zhu said the best line - Heaven aided me! 🙂

Since Zhuge Liang knew that Sima Yi knew of his tactical cautiousness, then Zhuge Liang should switch and become more aggressive in grand strategy. A good commander is able to switch tempo when he thinks it is in favor.

Doesn't work. Every grand plan of his failed due him having troubles to read personalities of the commanding officers. They would've worked if people just followed his commands by the book, but they never did. This is the general flaw of someone who tries to calculate multiple turns into future. Even one unforeseen act, will cause whole carefully calculated plan to collapse. This is why greatest strategies are strategies that allows you to be flexible and adjust to unforeseen events. Liu bei had two good grand strategists and warriors (rest of his generals), but Cao Cao managed to have all around talents in his army. They didn't rely on one person, but instead provided him the needed a flexibility.

@@Tespri I agree with what you said that Zhuge Liang is an obsessive planner. He should rather focus on pragmatism and micro manage the fighting formations and movements more than overall grand strategy. Like you said in war, every plan will eventually meet a situation where a new backup plan has to be in place. Zhuge Liang over plans, over expects a certain outcome, which is a fantastic thing but rarely occurs when on campaign. The Red Cliff victory was a masterstroke by Zhuge Liang and is considered one of the greatest military victories in all mankind. He can rest assure that his name is already amongst the legends like Alexander the Great, Napoleon, Caesar, Sun Tzu etc.... However, he was definitely exposed by Sima Yi who is a real counter puncher. Sima Yi remained flexible in decision making, did not over plan and at times, made aggressive moves to try to take the enemy by surprise. No doubt these two are amongst the best Chinese military tacticians in the entire history of China

Looked it up, Zhuge Liang was actually 2 years younger than sima Yi but died almost 20 years before him. So they were contemporaries
