Making a Saginaw power steering pump & Wabco vacuum pump combination from a 6BT fit my 4BT. Time will tell, but I may end up changing this basic system around to a more complex assisted system (e.g. hydroboost) if the vacuum pump doesn't match well with the Rover's brake booster. In the case that I need to redesign then the plan is: Modify/replace the can on the steering pump with one that has a fitting in place of the fill neck, add a 3-port remote steering fluid reservoir, & remove the stock brake booster & vacuum assisted master cylinder for a hydraulic assisted master cylinder. I have plans to build my own custom non-ABS brake setup & add a steering assist-ram in the future... BUT for now this is easier + faster + WAY cheaper!
~ PART#23 in a project dubbed "Nanuuq" to swap out my lifted Land Rover Discovery 2's blown 4.0L V8 & boring ZF auto for a Cummins 4BT 3.9L turbo (Holset Super HX30W) diesel 4-cylinder engine (Bosch P7100 pump) with an NV4500 5-speed manual transmission. The AWD 4x4 will remain with the LT230 transfer case divorced behind it all, & plenty of Dodge 6BT parts too. Another big phase of my custom DIY build to create a do-just-about-anything off-road / overland rig. Did I mention it's a camper too?

NOTE: I've changed this setup somewhat, now using an external reservoir & replaced the modified pump "can" with a PSC can that has just a simple AN fitting. _Video on that coming soon!_ This will set me up nicely for my future booster delete, hydroboost upgrade, steering assist ram, & massive Range Rover 6-pot brake plans 👍

I was gonna say just go grab a remote resivoir cover for that pump off of a GM truck. Looks like your standard Saginaw pump. GM made them with and without Hydroboost provisions.

@@geoffmooregm The ideas I have to run ram-assist steering AND making some enormous 6-pot Range Rover brakes from the junkyard work on these axles + deleting the ABS system has me honestly without a clue what the best combo will be. Figured I'd start simple & work up in complexity once I have all the new brake & steering systems plumbed in proper.

@@Tinker1837 well the good news is all the master cylinders attached to the hydroboost are quite large. The old ones were 1.25" bore and the new ones are around 1.375" so there should be lots of volume to run your big calipers. Do you know the drive ratio on that gear train that runs the pump? The ram assist may require more volume than a stock pump at say a 1:1 ratio could provide. Especially at low rpm. May have to look into an RCV pump or and over driven stock pump.
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 5 жыл бұрын
@@geoffmooregm Good to know! But on the pump volume, yeah these are capable of running a ram. There are some systems that include the same pump that's been milled out to fit bigger vanes inside for slightly increased flow, but many kits just use a new tank that fits over the pump & has an AN fitting.

That's awesome! Killer job getting that to all work together. A little bit of patience and planning and that pump fits in there like a glove. I love the DIY aspect of just little things like that, just sets the entire build off.

Never looked at a Saginaw unit that close before, figured they were all crimped... then to see it driven off the flywheel thru another pump = mind blown ! Takes some cajones to cut up brand new stuff, thanks for the lesson.

Neither had I & I was kinda surprised the can just slips over the pump with an o-ring around the perimeter to seal it up.

I like your humbleness. You show where you screwed up and how you fixed it. I have a 4bt in a 48 Ford F1. It has a P pump and the vacuum/ps pump stack. The guy I bought it from modded it similarly

Thanks, always hoping my errors could save others from the same issues. That's actually what I'm doing now, using a tank from PSC that just has a single fitting supplied by an external tank... lesson learned!

Yeah you can’t braze with a cutting tip. Has to be a rosebud tip that is more pinpoint and doesn’t carry quite the oxygen that a cutting tip does. Also, as you were doing this my initial thought was TIG welding it, glad you ended up going that route. Much better for thin metal.
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 5 жыл бұрын
Hard lesson learned on that one! Delayed me by the better part of a week to sort out the mistake. Funny too seeing as that friend had offered a while back to just do it right & TIG that since it's thin.

Nice. I’m planning on using some of the insurance money I’m getting for my Xterra to buy a tig welder. I only have a cheap Campbell Hausfeld mig. I’m thinking of using a Mercedes electric power steering pump on my D1. Since I’m going to upgrade to a high output alternator and have dual batteries. Less stuff on the front of the motor.

I'm half tempted to get my hand on a cheap/used TIG unit just so I can practice & learn. But yeah that sounds like a great idea, because I'm all about simplifying too.

sorry for my ignorance..but what is that bellows looking thing and bracket by the P-pump???
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 5 жыл бұрын
That's the "lift pump" which is a fuel pump that runs mechanically (no electricity) off the camshaft inside the block there. It actually doesn't even need an in-tank pump. That bellows is a manual priming button, so if the hose to the tank is empty you can push a bunch on that to bellows to suction fuel up to the engine.

Hi i bought a cummins that was in a truck for my f100. I can't find a specific vacuum pump for the 4 cylinder, I guess it's the same as the 6bt. Do I need to change the gear for the Distribution? Maybe I can use the same one that the air compressor has at the moment? Thank you. Very good your videos 💪💪💪 greetings from uruguay

I asked the seller of the vacuum pump if it worked for my 4bt and he answered no ... 😰 Maybe it changes the timing gear
@Tinker1837
@Tinker1837 3 жыл бұрын
Oh! I think the gear is the same, but the fitment issue is with the bracket to hold it to the engine block. The "wont fit" response was probably because the 4BT injection pump is very tight to it & requires a custom bracket (like you see in the video).

@@Tinker1837 I don't think I have the problem that you had with the steering pump because I have rotary injection and it is not as big as your p pump, so I hope that the mounting on the engine is always the same ... Your videos are very helpful. 💪

Just finded that video series of your build, its very impressive, but there is a mistake in my op, that tank had a upright mounted in, in your made i see its go lower so there might be a air "pillow", i just wonder why u didn't cut out that filling pipe, make two holes(one bigger at the side and one smaller at the top of original tank for vent) for even a smaller wired extensions with another small tank at the side of the engine chamber, there could be a better acces to control level of the fluid, thanks 4 ur great work, and cu in the next part:)(i understand that u may figure it out in later movies so if u make a better thing just ignore brainstorm part of that post)

Only because there is no room to go up, since the injection pump is so nearby. I will eventually change to a "hydroboost" steering with an assist ram that will have an external reservoir.
