Absolutely the best volleyer in my book. Mac, Edberg, and Rafter were the best volleyers of all time in my opinion. No one else comes close. They all had very entertaining games for spectators as well. Guys like Becker and Pete were more power-oriented players with big serves, not as fun to watch.

I include Becker in my list of top-five volleyers of all time. Becker was a superb athlete and was the first tennis player to be "the total package:" strong serve, excellent net game and also superb groundstrokes. I was a huge Edberg fan for as long as he played. He was beautiful to watch. But the record shows that when Becker was motivated and on his game, he was the better player, mostly because he had technically better groundstrokes. to back up his attacking game.

@@gordonipock9385 Boris was my second favorite player. Becker's game was more well-rounded and suited for modern power games. He was clearly the better player. But I loved Edberg more for his flaws in his game. As great as his volley and footwork were, his forehand was a wreck and his serve prowess was not at the levels of Becker, Sampras, Stith, ect. But watching him overcome more powerful players always had me on the edge of my seat.

I pulled for Edberg over anybody back in the day. His game was so thrilling to watch. Probably the best volleyer of all time, even better than Johnny Mac. Becker was so good so young that it warped him somewhat. He took his greatness for granted. It came so quickly and easily. Becker would deliberately play someone like Agassi from the baseline just to prove he could beat him at his own game. Of course Becker was all over the net in his matches with Edberg. Becker-Lendl matches were some of the best ever.

McEnroe himself when asked in the mid 80s about the up and comer (who won the calendar junior grand slam) Stefan Edberg. He said that Edberg was stronger & taller with better reach. McEnroe knew how good Edberg was going to be
@dimmykarras9287
@dimmykarras9287 2 жыл бұрын
@@shirejeti77 As much as I admire Edberg's class, court coverage, elegance and the beauty of his net game, John McEnroe played the best and most spectacular serve&volley game. He had the smoothest touch and he won a lot more tournaments than Stefan both in singles and doubles. Many people only remember post '84 McEnroe and tend to underrate him because of his downfall and inconsistency in his twilight years. The man walked on water in '84 with the best annual win-loss record in ATP history. Five consecutive Wimbledon finals prove how great he was. It's also an overlooked fact that McEnroe didn't participate in many Australian Opens because that used to be considered a lesser tournament. He could've won a couple of Aussie Opens easily. Stefan won two out of his six majors.

There was nothing worse than two baseline players back then. Nowadays that's all you get. The athleticism and artistry of net players is what made the game so exiting. And net players are the only ones who even made baseline players like Agassi watchable when they faced them bc of their great returns and passing shots..

@@stephaneprivate1013 Peak Edberg(1985-1992- excluding late 1993 -1996) would have handled peak Djokovic(2009-current day) the same way he handled the likes of Courier and more importantly, Agassi in this video. And Agassi is the link. He played young Federer and Nadal in the early 00s and gave them tough matches despite being well past his best. But prime Agassi(1988-1990) had problems with peak Edberg in that same time period(1989 -1990) as testified by this video. A jaded Sampras still gave a primed but not peaked Federer a lot to think about before losing in that 2001 4th round match at Wimby . Edberg , on the other hand ,handled prime Sampras with relative ease in the US Open final of 1992(and the Aussie Open Semi of 1993). In recent years ,Djokovic has had the luxury of playing volleying "incompetents" like Kirios, Berretini,Tsipitas and quite frankly Nadal himself. He has never faced a true volleying master like Edberg,Becker,Sampras or McEnroe(when they were at their peak).

@@spandanbaral7282 Agreed. It's sad to see the abscence of instinctive serve and volleying in this day and age. Unfortunately with the definitive and independent decline of Edberg, Becker,Lendl,Wilander and McEnroe circa 1993-94, the way was clear for Sampras to dominate from the mid 90s onwards. It set off a trend where competetent but ultimately second rate players like Philipoussis,Krajicek,Henman,Ivanisevic,Rafter,Rosset,Rusedeski ect ect---big servers with adequate but perfunctory volleying skills and generic baseliners like Pioline,Brugera,Sanchez,Korda would provide the main opposition(Agassi apart) for Sampras for the rest of the decade. Sampras was a truly exceptional talent in an unexceptional era(1995-2002). And the lack of true creme de la creme talents ultimately fed into the early Federer era of the 00s.....giving us drivel like Roddick and Hewitt. Nadal would follow shortly afterwards providing a genuine talented counterforce for Federer to chew on.But Nadal was one dimensional.Same with Djokovic. Federer's all court game only looked great........compared to all the monolithic baseliners he would face for the best part of 18 years! But that golden period of the mid to late 80s(roughly 1985) to very early 90s(circa 1991/92) featured the absolute creme' de la creme' talents roughly at their peak or at least still in their prime ,pitted against each other........Edberg,Becker,Sampras,Agassi,Lendl,Wilander with declining but still competitive McEnroes and Connors beefing up the strength in depth. Not to mention second tier players like Leconte,Noah,Mercir,Cash adding to the diverse mix that made that era the undeniably most competitive in modern tennis. It's sad to see a geriatric Nadal or Djojovic these days.....handle the new generation with relative ease. Bring back serve and volley!

After Edberg hung up his stick I adopted Richard Gasquet as my favorite player. Aesthetically he was right there with Edberg. Gasquet had a beautiful attacking all-court game when he was in his teens and twenties. The guy's talent was off the chart. His backhand is probably the best of all time and he is an under appreciate volleyer with a never miss overhead. Gasquet could win from anywhere on the court. His weakness was his serve. Not nearly as good as the top players of his era. Gasquet was similar to Jimmy Connors. Both had to grind out every point starting from the baseline, though both often finished at the net. Watch Gasquet's matches, especially from about 2005 to 2010. Nothing boring or predictable. Beautiful all-court play and with that stunning backhand.
