Hi! I'm Stelios Pantazis.
I'm a doctor and I specialize in
medical nutrition and metabolic disorders.
Our subject today is the ideal diet for
people diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease.
Hashimoto's disease is an autoimmune disease
that is really common.
In fact, today, it's the most common
autoimmune disease.
Hashimoto's disease affects the thyroid
and damages it.
As a result, over the years, the thyroid
becomes unable to produce enough hormones
to support the body.
Before coming to this, there is usually
a long period of many years
over which Hashimoto's disease appears
in blood tests and ultrasounds,
but it requires no medication.
The damage caused to the thyroid
by Hashimoto's disease is autoimmune.
This means that due to reasons
that are not fully understood yet,
the body attacks and destroys the thyroid.
Today, we're seeing the dietary measures
that people suffering
from Hashimoto's disease can take,
either they take medication or not.
Weight loss.
The most important thing
that people suffering from
Hashimoto's disease should pay attention to
is their weight.
There are plenty scientific data
showing that overweight people
suffering from Hashimoto's disease
have more symptoms and more intense symptoms
and need medication more often.
If you suffer from Hashimoto's disease
and you're overweight,
you should pay attention to your diet,
in order to lose weight
and reach a normal weight.
This will reduce the chances
that you'll need medication
or it will significantly delay
the need for medication.
Quit gluten.
There are many scientific data showing that
people suffering from Hashimoto's disease
suffer from gluten intolerance more often
than the general population.
This is why, after diagnosing Hashimoto's
disease, your endocrinologist is very likely
to have recommended a test
for celiac disease,
which is an extreme form
of gluten intolerance.
There are also some early data showing that
people suffering from Hashimoto's disease
are benefited from quitting gluten,
even if they're not gluten intolerant.
Specifically, a study that lasted
six months has shown that
people following a gluten-free diet
stated an improvement
in the disease symptoms
and their tests showed a significant
decrease of the antithyroid antibodies.
Moreover, from my 20-year experience,
I've noticed that people
suffering from autoimmune diseases
often experience an improvement
in the symptoms and their disease,
when they quit gluten,
even if they don't suffer
from celiac disease.
Gluten is the main protein in wheat,
therefore people that want to quit gluten
should avoid wheat products.
But this is not enough.
Rye and barley don't contain gluten,
but they contain proteins
that have a likeness to gluten,
namely proteins that are
biochemically similar to gluten.
Therefore, the body reacts adversely
to these proteins too.
For example, the protein of rye,
which is called secalin,
and gluten are 80% alike.
Therefore, gluten-intolerant people are
almost always intolerant to secalin
and hordein, which is the barley protein.
Ideally, these three cereals
should be avoided.
On the contrary, the likeness to avenin,
the oatmeal protein, is just 10-20%.
Therefore, many times oatmeal
doesn't need to be avoided.
Possibly quit lactose and dairy.
Studies have shown that people
suffering from Hashimoto's disease
are often lactose-intolerant.
Lactose is the main carbohydrate in milk,
although yoghurt and cheese may also
contain it in small quantities.
A study has found out that almost 4 in 5
people suffering from Hashimoto's disease
were also lactose-intolerant.
This doesn't mean that everyone
suffering from Hashimoto's disease
should quit dairy,
but you should bear in mind
that if you quit milk,
you'll probably notice a significant
improvement in the antithyroid antibodies.
In some cases, quitting other dairy
helps too, namely yoghurt and cheese.
Increase anti-inflammatory foods.
Hashimoto's disease is
an autoimmune disease,
which means that the destruction
of the thyroid is caused by inflammation.
Knowing this, we realise how important
anti-inflammatory foods are.
Fruit and vegetables are
anti-inflammatory foods.
In fact, a study has shown that women
suffering from Hashimoto's disease
had lower oxidative stress indicators
when they mentioned higher consumption
of fruit and vegetables.
Diet rich in non-processed foods.
The best diet for weight loss and decrease
of the antithyroid antibodies
for people suffering
from Hashimoto's disease
is a diet that is rich in whole foods,
mainly plant-based foods.
Traditional Mediterranean diet is
full of delicious foods
that are not processed, such as
legumes, vegetables cooked in oil,
wonderful salads, fruit and dried nuts,
which abundantly offer
antioxidant and anti-inflammatory substances
and many fibers that help
in weight control
as well as in the decrease of
the inflammation against the thyroid.
