A clear and helpful video. Many thanks. I’ve never done this before - now I feel confident to give it a go.

A good simple video so easy to understand about hard wiring loco's Jenny, great advice

Nice video Jennifer. I'm still buying chips for my DCC ready loco's, but once they are done I'll be trying to chip some of my better and more unusual non-ready locos. The rest will be sold off to fund newer replacements. Excellent and easy to follow video. Keep doing what you do so well, and please add more outtakes and bloopers to your videos 👍

Hi Jen.Nice vid. I used heat shrink tube to cover solder joints on wires. It's neater and the insulation tape tends to degrade into a gluey mess very quickly IMHO.

Hello Jennifer. I'm new to this DCC method. I was wondering if, after a train like this is hard wired for DCC, is it still able to be used on a DC track with a normal controller, or is that a no no ?

Are the little 'Tantalum'(?) capacitors just there for RF suppressors? I've not seen such a number on one loco myself, but I've got older locos...and not Bachmann...bar one recent addidtion...and I haven't opened it up yet. They shouldn't matter if they're only on the DC side of the 'chip? Cheers for letting us see that as the instructions, or 'exploded diagram' that I got with my first and recent Bachmann loco, was fairly sketchy. Also, maybe not as new as was made out at time of sale/purchase. Very straightforward instructions there though, Jenny. Cheers.

hi Jenny. useful Video, many thanks…….my question is this. Do you think this method will work with the new Hornby HM-DCC decoders? I have a lot (!) of old DC locos that I’m hoping can be converted to use the new HMDCC kit……what are your thoughts? many thanks

HI Jennifer not sure you will see this but in the hopes you will would this same principle apple to two Bachmann Class 158's that I want to convert to DCC ?? Assume best to use a 4 pin ?? Thanks Tim

Those capacitors on the loco motors aren't needed because the DCC chips are suppressed - you can do away with those. As others have said, heat-shrink tubing is better for these jobs than insulating tape.

The capacitors are there for EMI suppression. The brushes arc as they make and break contact and cause RFI.

@@nigelwright7557 Yes, those capacitors are needed for EMI/RFI suppression when running a locomotive on DC but on DCC they are not needed. The instructions with some DCC decoders tell you to remove them.

Jenny you would be far better off using shrink sleeving on your soldered joints rather than tape as it can unravel, shrink sleeving is not expensive, you can it big enough to cover your dcc chip,to shrink your sleeving use the top half of your soldering iron

Too true! Shrink sleeving is so cheap and I'd say easier to use than trying to tape joints up.
