I think Phil Jackson bringing the triangle offense had to do more in making his teammates better than anything the Pistons did. Also, being zen and not letting the Pistons dirty plays get to him helped. Again. all that brought by Phil Jackson. Jordan said himself in an interview with Ahmad Rashad years ago that he and the Bulls wouldn't have gone on that run they went on if it weren't for the Pistons challenging them and making them tougher and better. Max must've missed that interview. It wasn't just that Mike didn't have another All-Star. It was also him trying to do it by himself. Mike is the GOAT but there's no need to create myths or act like he was ready to win as soon as he got to the league.
@simple45679
@simple45679 4 жыл бұрын
Jordan had other aspirations and goals other than overcoming the pistons. When he won his 6th chip, he already knew he was gonna talk about him now having more rings than Magic. If they ran it back and won, he'd say he has more than Kareem. The Pistons made Jordan mature real fast but let's not act like Jordan wouldn't have gone to win multiple championships. This guy literally accused the Bulls of tanking in 86 so he can play heavy minutes (even though it would ultimately help the team with picks), that's the kind of competitive guy he is.

Isiah and Lambeer should thank their god(s) and priests that MJ didn't get Scottie earlier in his career, coz if he did, they wouldn't have had any ring....not even one! Give MJ Scottie Pippen (no migraines) in 1989 and 1990 and the Bulls would have won those years, easily! (in 6 games or less). Also, take Scottie away in 1991 to 1993 and MJ wouldn't have won. Scottie (a complementary ALL star talent to MJ and the Bulls) was MJ's rate limiting factor for the Bull's rings. He was the decider. Once he hit his strides, the Bulls shut out the league and all the 1980s "tough" guys/big teams had to practically give up any title hopes and aspirations (i.e essentially they were retired earlier than planned, in despair). They taught him nothing, he was already the best (by far) in his second year and once he got his man, it was a wrap for them all!

People forget that when Doug Collins was the Bulls' head coach his philosophy was just give Jordan the ball. Thats why he scored so much. When Phil Jackson came in and introduced the triangle it involved everybody getting a touch on the ball not just one player. Jordan didn't have a 'team' until he did. All he had was Oakley early on. What Michael didn't do was agree with other all-stars in the league to all collude to one team. Pippen was built up into being a star on the Bulls. The supporting cast that Jordan had in Chicago were uplifted into better players just by playing on that team, with that cornerstone of a player, and that zen-master of a coach. I'd say the biggest argument was that Rodman came into Chicago as a developed star already - back then, the city definitely wasn't on edge for Rodman to become the star that he did, as he was volatile and already in his mid-30s. Although no one knew how big of a part he'd play in the coming years. All of the supporting players over both 3-peat runs - I'm willing to bet most basketball fans (before watching the Last Dance) wouldn't be able to name most of them. Jordan was drafted to Chicago and a team was developed around him to being multi-year Champions. I'd argue LeBron was brought into the NBA too early, and ultimately became a Champion by conspiring with other established all-stars to manufacturing what was strategically put together in Chicago.

Wow! I didn't know that! Isiah was injured in 1991! The bulls would probably win anyway but it wouldn't be a sweep. Thank you Stephen a for pointing that out! It just goes to show that the little details of history can be distorted or overlooked sometimes. Again, the bulls would have won that series anyway, but definitely not in 4 games. If Isaiah was healthy it probably would have been 6.

You are absolutely right John g. Put this in perspective, the pistons weren’t simply physical, they were dirty. They bullied the Bulls. The tried to literally hurt Bulls players. Specifically Jordan and Pippen. So MJ and the Bulls bulk up and become better able to withstand the physicality. BUT THEY NEVER RESORTED TO IT. They played above the Pistons. Even before the Bulls got passed the Pistons, MJ behaves like a champion. John Salley even admitted that once they saw Pippen not retaliate or lose focus, they knew it was over. Think about that. It never crossed the Pistons mind to just play basketball. As talented as that team was, when it came down to actually playing the game, they couldn’t do it without hurting people. Ike has changed his story dozens of times. But you see he still treads lightly when he speaks about MJ. That says something. It goes deeper. Lambeer is and was an idiot. So he sticks by his explanation and excuse about getting old. But Ike picks his words carefully. Yeah he’ll correct these commentators, but he won’t say anything snide about MJ. By the way, John Salley did shake the Bulls players hands. Probably why they let him come over and get a ring for free. What people don’t understand about that generation is a handshake was the single greatest gesture to communicate respect. Ike talks about the Celtics walking off, but look at how he pursued McHale to make sure he got some kind of respectful gesture out of it. If it didn’t matter to Ike he wouldn’t have gone after McHale. Lambeer too fo that matter. Say what you want but that’s on tape. All of it. Especially Ike’s shame when he walked past the Bulls players. Everything about his body language said he was wrong and ashamed.

@@cooleverafter I mostly agree with all you said and the Pistons resorted to some pretty low tactics. But they weren't just dirty or just physical...there were smarts involved also...forcing Jordan left, or away from the baseline is smart. The rest was obvious, they couldn't match the Bulls head up so they had to play dirty.
