While listening to this interview a story told by Wendell Berry came to mind: “It was the Shakers who were sure the end could come anytime, and they still saved the seeds and figured out how to make better diets for old people. Thomas Merton was interested in the Shakers. I said to him, ‘If they were certain that the world could end at any minute, how come they built the best buildings in Kentucky?’ ‘You don’t understand,’ he said. ‘If you know the world could end at any minute, you know there’s no need to hurry. You take your time and do the best work you possibly can.’ That was important to me. I’ve repeated it many times.”

Vulnerability is our secret strength..... our weakness is our strength..... the uroborus grabs its tale again, and each one of us understands the narrative, and feels disgrace. What is important now in these strange times? What can get us out of the desperation? this abstraction? "Are we in agreement that the world is ending? " the feeling of impending danger, is it a frame of mind that creates its own reality? "to live in a way that...." fill in the blanks..... the presence of a we.... the next incarnation of the Buddha.... how do we reconcile when we finally understand we are dying... the act of translating.... WE want to visit what we have saved for tomorrow. "I don't want to go on forever....." "I am too old for that shit.... I am not a process guy..... I will have to listen to this several times..... thanks a lot.... the queen has died while you have been conversing. "Are things really that bad?"

While I’m a big fan of your interviewing Ian, and of Stephen’s (not as familiar with Kimberly), this particular interview was disappointing. I think the content was WAY too abstract and, the I couldn’t really identify the title, “A Future Worth Reckoning” from the content. I offer this feedback sincerely, because I am a fan of your work, and I will buy the book and read it. Keep giving your gifts, the world needs them.

Appreciate the feedback. This was a new structure- as I haven't interviewed Stephen with another guest in the same space before. I find that it created a unique challenge over Zoom to find a flow. [from Ian]
