I have really bad neuropathy in my hands from diabetes and I'm having a very hard time trying to develop hand and finger techniques wondering if you've ever dealt with anyone who has numb hands I'm 68 years old and just decided to start playing because I can't play guitar anymore thanks again for what you do

Hello Stephen - I have improved my doubles a lot but I am at the point you are talking about. I have hit the roadblock at around 80 to 100 bpm. I had heard reference to "wrists again" but did know what it meant. I think this is part of what I was needing to further improve my doubles. I will be prcticing these steps and look forward to step 3 in a week or so. Owen

@@00p13p It's still a challenge. A death grip on the sticks happens the faster I move around the kit. It's not as bad as it once was, which leads me to believe that practicing and playing have a lot to do with it. Keep hittin' things with your sticks, my friend. It will come.

When I try to get faster on doubles I begin engaging my shoulder and forcing the stick to go faster. I struggle relaxing and let the sticks go. Looking for a roll, not there yet. Love your lessons!!

Great videos and tips thanks, I've been using a cushion to practice on to hopefully get control of the stick.

All right, you asked, "what is still frustrating you." Well, I am still at about 80bpm (eighth notes) and trying to get the loose grip technique to smooth out. My sticks continue to slip, and it is awkward holding my hands at an angle so the stick does not contact my palm and throw off the beat, yet keep my hands high enough to prevent the stick from hitting my thigh on the rebound and throwing off the beat. I do well enough while using just one hand, but when I add the other is when it gets hard to keep my hands in position. That is also when my wrists start flexing with the motion rather than just relying on the rebound. More practice maybe? I hope so, but I am way behind the class right now.

I think between 110-120 BPM 16th doubles is my current challenge. My coordination falls apart within this range. I've known 110 to be a big challenge before now, but I know with more practice it's gonna get more natural for me

My weak left hand has trouble coming in the center of pad and bouncing off to the left. I can stay in time but the stick isn't going straight up and down. Great teaching by the way.

Stephen very nice lesson. My challenge is really a conundrum. And it comes from Tony Williams. In a video he did in the 1990s he said, as you do, that every note in doubles should be "intentional". Especially doubles on the toms. For him he held the sticks way down the shaft and the grip was controlled by the ring finger and pinky! When he did this his palms became to be facing down. The power comes from the wrists with almost no rebound. This does work but takes a lot of reframing practice. Do you know this method and if so what is your opinion of it? Thanks much. Bill.

I’m definitely struggling here. It’s not clicking on how to use wrists and rebound. I can use either/or with wrists being way slower. And any kind of towel just kills it all. I can only use wrists with a towel, and they are slow.

Just over 3 months into my drum lessons and my biggest challenge is my left hand. I have to use more force with my left hand and I still can’t get the stick to bounce as high, as even, and as easily as I can with my right hand. That’s been my struggle with all my rudiments.

My biggest challenge is definitely passing the 120BPM mark without getting sloppy. Up to that point I can keep it pretty tight and each note well defined but after that, not so much. I need my 16th notes to be cleaner and able to hear each note and not have it all mush together.

Great lesson, thank you. My biggest challenge on doubles is definitely losing grip position at higher speeds. I have ordered a pair of Promark Activegrip Rebound 5B stix. Definitely helps with doubles, as the weight of the stick is more to end of stick and rebound happens without thinking or cheating with the wrist. I dont know, maybe you can comment on this version if it is one you recommend? Thanks.

after over 2 years my forearms still start to stiffen up and my left hand still just doe's not work once this happens, although i am improving but it is getting some what tedious now, thinking of giving up and taking up knitting! LOL, but i have spent too much on drumming and that is' i suppose what stops me from giving up, plus i enjoying playing on the drums oh well maybe one day.

So, part 1 is rebound only; and now part 2 is wrists. So with wrists it looks like two single strokes instead of two for one with rebound.
