Thank you for this! I have been browsing so hard about people in psychiatry field. Among every psych students I'm with, I am usually one of the few who would like to take this path, even if I am well aware how stigmatized my country is and how few psychiatrists are in my country. So I am really glad that I found your channel ♥️

Thank you so much for making these videos. I am a middle schooler in Korea who wants to be a psychiatrist, but I didn't know much about the field before watching your videos. I am so happy to find them and They provided me so much information about psychiatry and the preparations necessary! Your words also gave me motivation! Now I am researching more about psychiatry and some mental disorders that people are suffering from, but I'm not sure which book to refer to. Can you give me some recommendations for the books that can help me? Thank you so much (>-

Hi, thank you so much, this is SO helpful! I imagine you probably won’t see this, but I was curious about your experience. I have had a long discomfort/fear of blood/needles. I was curious how much that was a part of your education/residency. Not sure if this is something I can get over or if it will be a roadblock that gets in the way of pursuing this. Thank you!
@DoktoraJackie Жыл бұрын
hi!! very minimal when it comes to our line of work however you'd likely see a lot of needles and blood during other rotations especially the surgical rotations. I am wondering if it's worth it to do exposure therapies around this phobia

back in december, my psychiatrist of 16 years retired. i live in a pretty decent size metro area in the northeast. i round out the hard way that many psychiatrist are not doing both med management and psychotherapy. and not too many of med students want to pursue psychiatry. it sounds like the issue where nobody wants to be a primary care. is there anyway to correct this issue?
@DoktoraJackie2 жыл бұрын
unfortunately I think it's more complicated than people not wanting to do therapy but that it's simply not given to many psychiatrists as an option depending on what medical system they're working in. Prescribing medications are what we are "needed" for so time is often only given to prescribe medications. Ultimately it comes down to how psychiatrists are allowed to bill for their services and whether insurance companies will truly support their psychotherapy work.
@timothyflanigan17772 жыл бұрын
@@DoktoraJackie i was able to get in with a board certified psychiatric nurse. i have had two virtual appointments with her. she said that my insurance should not have a problem with bi-weekly appointments, for both med management and psychotherapy. my psychiatrist that just retired, told me several years ago, she went to a event that one of the biggest insurance companies held for the psychiatrist in the area. there biggest concern was drug cost and unnecessary hospitalizations. it happened to me a few times, that she wanted to put me on a new drug that was expensive. the insurance company denied it, because they made my psychiatrist, try other drugs before they approved the expensive drug. i am in my mid 50's, i am very concerned about the lack of mental health providers, going forward. the insurance companies know it is a crisis with the shortage of mental health providers. when she told me that she was retiring, i made well over 30 calls, i got two returned calls. i did not want to have to go to a big group, but that is what happened. but doing it virtual, helps, so i do not have to go to a big office.

i agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying! we are worried too & insurance companies have too much influence

Hi. I don't know if you'll see this but, it's worth a shot. If you may please, could you give your input on my situation? I want to be a psychiatrist. I was in college last year and I was deciding to major for business / marketing but I couldn't even finish that well and ended up withdrawing from 5/7 classes because unfortunately it was a really rough year (father passed away and I had to move away from toxic family space) My gpa is a 2.7 now I want to ask what classes should I take for the next three years and will a gap of school for a year effect my chances getting into a med school? Should I also take extra activities and try and get doctor experience and if so, what could I do? (I guess internships... but I'd like to hear from you, you know?)
@DoktoraJackie2 жыл бұрын
Hi jam! I'm so sorry for your losses and that's a lot to manage even without trying to juggle college. Many people have gaps as long as you feel comfortable explaining to the admissions committee what happened, I imagine it couldn't hurt. I would focus on what the pre-med requirements are and if you are able to shadow or do some volunteer work in the medical community, that could confirm for you whether medical school is the route for you. I also recommend activities that you are actually passionate or excited about and stick with it. Extracurriculars are in my opinion the best way to develop those leadership skills that help make a great physician

Hi!! I got a bachelors in science/pre-med because I didn’t know I wanted to do psychiatry until medical school since I never had even heard of it before! If I had known, I imagine taking some psychology classes might have been helpful! the training is 4 years of medical school + 4 years of psychiatry residency (3 years if you fast track) + 2 years of child psychiatry fellowship. 😃 this is what it looks like in the USA but I know it’s different in other parts of the world. Thank you for your question!!

+Nada de nada there are side effects to all medications which should be reviewed with your physician! I appreciate your thoughts on it. No medications for a diagnosed mental illness should be prescribed or taken without a lot of consideration. Most importantly, it is a discussion and decision made only between the patient and the doctor treating that patient.
@DoktoraJackie3 жыл бұрын
+Nada de nada yes, the medication side effects of ANY medication should be reviewed by ANY specialist with the patient. It is also unethical for a patient to not be given medication that would treat their illness if it is available. Any comments that are supportive of stigma will be removed. I appreciate your understanding!
