Loved the video, Dr. Jackie! You definitely answered my question about the stigma where well-meaning people and family say you’ll get depressed or see diagnoses everywhere and in everyone you meet if you enter what they presume is a ‘dark’ field 😅 good to know that’s pure stigma with no truth to it 🙏🏼

yes! all fields of medicine have very sad components to them because we are helping those who are sick but it seems like people feel the need to *warn* those interested in psychiatry

Hi Dr. Jackie, I've been on the fence over choosing PSY for a while and am finally acknowledging my own choice now that i've matched into it. I'll be starting my psychiatry residency soon and wanted to know what books or extra readings that you've enjoyed that i could get a head start on. Till now i've had very superficial knowledge on it, and would like a proper introduction. Thank you for all the videos, they've been quite insightful. Love from Nepal.

Hi!! First off, I cannot wait to go back to Nepal. I had the privilege of doing a medical rotation there in Dhulikhel during medical school and absolutely loved my time there. I still dream of the momos! In terms of books, the quintessential one is Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis of Psychiatry. This will give you a (not so brief) but general overview of everything psychiatry! CONGRATULATIONS on matching psychiatry!! We are so lucky to have you as part of the team :) Dr Jackie

@@DoktoraJackie Thank you, I matched into a university here at home. So glad you've been here before and that we share the same love for momos. You've been so inspiring and I'm very much looking forward to your work on youtube.

Hello jackie, Your videos are so informative... I am a junior doctor( not in UK) .. Interested in psychiatry .....but the prob is in my personal life i am a short tempered, angry person......but i never misbehaved with any patient.. I can stay cool with patient... Will it be wise for me to go for psychiatry? I am confused if i will be able to tolerate a mentally upset pt or not coz dnt have much practical experience of dealing psychiatry...

it's so interesting bc I wouldn't have called myself the most patient person in my actual life but when it's your job and you're using all your skills from training to help a family, i think it helps build compassionate which has a direct impact on your ability to stay patient

I did however want to share a dilemma before I apply for psych residency, will I be detaching myself from the large chunk of medicine and forgetting about common conditions and their treatments? I feel like I’ll terribly miss out on that part of medicine if I pursue psychiatry 🥺 do you encounter and get to treat medical pathologies in training or ever have that feeling of missing out on being the master of all trades, as one can be in IM?
@DoktoraJackie2 жыл бұрын
hii! you actually have to do 6 months of internal medicine alongside the internal medicine residents! You also might really enjoy doing consultation liaison psychiatry!

Do you ever feel like no matter how much you counsel parent on how to manage, they still do not listen to you and cause pain to the child?
@DoktoraJackie Жыл бұрын
Hi! This is a complicated question to answer because the vast majority of parents want what they believe is best for their child. A very important part of every healthcare professional's job is to call protective services IF safety is a concern. In general, most caregivers parent the best way they know how and it takes a lot of courage to ask for help with how to parent a kiddo that might struggle with behavioral concerns and vice versa. Since you're asking if I ever personally feel that way, I will say for me, I can sometimes feel frustrated that maybe progress feels slow but my job is to manage that independently while meeting everyone seeking my help where they are. Change is only sustainable if we are going at the appropriate pace and that is different for every family.
