I once saw Steve performing with Victor Wooten. After the show, I bought some CDs and wanted to ask Steve to sign his for a friend of mine who is a fretless bass monster in his own right. Steve had left and was headed to the bus or something. I was bummed, but someone in the crew called him and he came back just to see me (and sign the CD). I was flattered!!!

:05 - It wdv been the honor of my life to shake the hand of Steve Bailey. The hands that play this instrument so gracefully. He is absolutely amazing. 6 strings and fretless. How in the hell does he know where he's going without frets. I always thought it was a helluva gift to play a fretless

2:20 and 3:00 OMFG. It's like his ancestors have been playing fretless bass for millions of years and the locations of notes on the neck are hardwired into his DNA. 😶

I remember downloading videos of him and Victor playing together before the youtube days. Today we can stream 4k-recordings for hours and get recommendations. In those days we read something in specialized magazines and had to look for some filesharing opportunities and wait half a day to watch a 10min clip.

Artificial Harmonic full chords! nuts man.
@harrisonstephens18359 ай бұрын
Sorry I’m a few years late, but basically if you hold down a note with one finger, it becomes a new fundamental to apply harmonics to with another finger. He is doing this with multiple notes at a time to produce full chords of harmonics that aren’t necessarily limited to the fundamentals of the open strings.
@harrisonstephens18359 ай бұрын
Guitar players will often do this by quickly picking and then touching the string with the thumb of their right hand, however this is a lot less precise if you’re trying to get a specific note, and a lot harder on the bass if you don’t have a pick.

Not really....the bass approach is much more interesting....and being a fretless there is really no limitations.....
@milesdust34652 жыл бұрын
He may be a great guy and so on, but he should stick to a 4-string fretless. His intonation sucks and all off these glissandos? Marcus Miller is not a upright player, but he played double bass on "Night Music", and it is fortgetable, because it did not sound well with Slim Gailard. The electric fretless is a different thing, and he is very careful using it. This is just unbearable.
@yankton45292 жыл бұрын
Honestly cannot tell if you’re joking. If you aren’t then I have no clue what you’re talking about, intonation sounds excellent here.
