3 жыл бұрын

Kerry Staite is pitching a dynamo-powered light and charging system for bicycles. He’s seeking an investment of $50,000 in return for a 25% equity stake in KLite but Steve wants to know exactly how he gets 10 watts from a 3-watt hub.
An international sensation, Shark Tank AUS features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Tank from our Sharks, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

For anyone who never took circuits, what he is trying to explain is impedance matching. The tl;dr is that the a DC circuit can transfer the most power from source to load when the equivalent resistance of the load is equal to the equivalent resistance of the source. This is *not* the most efficient way the system can be configured, only the one with the most power transfer. I would assume most of these systems have a substantially more resistive load, which will give you less light, but with much more of the energy you put in actually getting turned into light. What he's actually done is tuned a system that was running at 3W previously to move 10W, which gives more light at the cost of less efficiency and more resistance on the wheel. No laws of thermodynamics have been broken, and he's running the generator less efficiently, not more. He didn't discover anything, he just changed the circuit to fulfill a different goal than the original engineers.

Except the 10watts from a 3watt hub makes no sense. So you are talking about "really not bad" $500 for something that doesn't do what he says it will. And apparently he realized it because you can't buy his hub anymore. You have to find a 3rd party one. As was said, "you doubled the previous efficiency of a dynamo and decided to power a bicycle light with it." If you could double the efficiency of a dynamo, you'd change the world.

Thanks for the info. Genuinely appreciated, but the dig at the Sharks is way off. "These guys have no clue". They are not supposed to have a clue about any of the dozens of different products which appear before them, with no forewarning. Yes, I've heard one of the UK Dragon say that it is just as it looks at the start of each video - they have no idea who or what is going to appear through the door. It is 100% the job of the pitcher to explain why they have a good product and a market. The Sharks gave Kerry every opportunity to recover his pitch, and he blew it each time.

Kerry reminded me of a weakness I've always had - of being overinvolved in my work. In some ways it was helpful to be shown how bad this can look if unchecked. It is the job of the pitcher to explain why they have a good product and a market - the Sharks gave him every opportunity to recover his pitch and explain these, and he blew it each time. Either he wanted to show "passion" and commitment, or he's just so naturally passionate that he can't control himself and see his work from someone else's point of view. To me, the most significant missed opportunity was the Sharks' astonishment at his markup from $50 to $500. All he had to do was listen, pause, think and explain "It takes me 10 hours (or whatever) to build each light", and add "I'm selling to people who spend $10,000 on a bike, a $1000 on a wheel, and just want the best and lightest in every component on their bike, whatever the cost". And "The market in Australia is small, but US and Europe is $500M, and I'm looking at 5% of that".

@@DMAX-tp4pc I don't think he is selling a dynamo hub though. His current website suggests that his lights would be paired with dynamo hubs from existing manufacturers - SON, Shimano, Shutter Precision. I still don't understand his claim of getting "10 watts from a 3 watt hub," but it would seem that something about the electronics in the light changes how it draws energy from the (unmodified?) hub...? I can't find anything about this claim anymore on his current website, so I wonder if that is still a part of the technology or if he just shifted to be one of the players in the (3W) dynamo lighting space, but focused on optimizing for ultra-endurance riding.
@chukuemekaoje1015
@chukuemekaoje1015 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrislukes9037 The "10W from a 3W hub" is essentially an unsubstantiated free energy claim. If he's truly getting 10W, then there's likely another power source in addition to hub that's probably 10W or more, because there are absolutely going to be energy losses when any sort of power is generated (heat, for example, is energy that's lost to the surrounding environment).
@chrislukes9037
@chrislukes9037 3 жыл бұрын
@@chukuemekaoje1015 Right, I realize it's a highly suspect claim, but interested how he would even _attempt_ to explain it. I also realize there are "no free lunches" and that the energy would have to come from some source - that said there _is_ additional energy available in the spinning wheel (which was always the original source of any energy from the hub). I'm no electrical engineer, but doesn't seem _entirely_ unbelievable that electronics connected to a dynamo hub could _possibly_ (but maybe not!) cause it to exceed its usual limits to "steal" more energy from the spinning wheel at the cost of more drag (so _not_ creating energy out of thin air). It also seems possible that his (misleading) claim is really more about his truly 3W system being "effectively" as bright as a similar 10W system would be (similar to how LED household lightbulbs are often marketed according to the wattage of the comparable incandenscent bulb they could replace, rather than wattage they actually use in the finer print). I haven't rewatched the video since my original comment, but it didn't _seem_ that this is what he meant, but who knows?! It's definitely a suspicious claim.

as an EE impedance matching could perhaps allow him to get more power from the dynamo. Id think the load would be speed dependent and thus hard to match.

I'm glad she didn't get mad when he called her "Darling" There are some people that use "old fashioned" terms to speak to women, but you can tell the way they talk in general, the way they say it: they only mean it as a sign of endearment. Some men were raised to say things like "sweetie, darling, etc" to women often to show that they aren't a threat, that they respect you, they might think of you as a daughter/sister/mother, etc. I watch Chef Gordan Ramsey a lot on youtube. In many of the shows, when he's speaking to women of all ages, and they hand him something, or he asks something from them, he always says "thank you, Darling". You can tell it's just how he was raised to speak politely to women.

An E-bike turns electricity into rotational kinetic force to move the wheels. And this dynamo turns the kinetic energy from the rotation into electricity. One of the most important principles of energy is that it is always zero sum. That means it doesn't gain nor lose energy unless there is an external cause. The external cause here would be air friction, friction with the road it's running on, amongst many others. The dynamo would add to that, one more source of friction to the wheels. The dynamo fitted on the wheels would in turn slow the bike down. And the energy generated at the cost of slowing down the wheel would not be greater than the loss of distance due to needing higher energy cost to run the same speed. TL;DR It would only charge peanuts worth, and that wouldn't be enough for the E-bike to make up for extra friction. If anything, you'll just lose total distance.

I wish this guy the best tbh. He just seemed like a nice regular guy that has a passion for bikes and honestly it seemed like a nicely packaged and sleek light setup for being handmade. $500 isn't ridiculous by any means if you understand how expensive road biking parts are either. Plus if its only $50 a unit to build, he could adjust and lower his pricing a little too if he had to. I hope he keeps up the enthusiasm!

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but would it not be more efficient to carry a couple extra batteries in a little compartment on the bike, rather than power a generator for a light with your own energy and carry the extra mass of the generator?

$350 for the light, $150 for the hub. So $500 for a dynamo headlight. That just seems insane. You can buy a headlight with two 18650 batteries built-in and that can run for days depending on the brightness setting.

Gadget Addict this is not just another gadget that your average soccer mom would buy off a shelf. You would be surprised at how much pro cyclists spend on these gadgets. There are 3000$ carbon wheels and 10000$ bikes in the market and they actually sell!

@@sinuslebastian6366 yeah I know some triathlon guys who spend an insane amount on their bikes. But I just can't see them spending on this. The weight of his device and being restricted to just his hub doesn't make sense compared to an equally sized and weighted light that uses a lithium battery. They can get something which does the same job, weighs the same and allows them to use their own hub. The only difference is they have to charge the lithium battery at the end of the day. Or after s few days depending on the size of the battery.
