Little did they know. They created the best country music song of all time
@shawnuel11 ай бұрын
This was the most fertile time for country music, IMO. Steve, Dwight Yoakum, Lyle Lovett, Nanci Griffith, Rosanne Cash, Kathy Mattea, Foster and Lloyd, Marty Stuart, David Lynn Jones, along with the country punk movement in L.A. with Lone Justice, Rank & File, Long Ryders, True Believers and, closer to home, Jason and the (Nashville) Scorchers. This was the type of country music I cut my teeth on.

Well, I gotta keep rockin while I still can, got a two-pack habit and a motel tan, when my boots hit the boards I'm a brand new man with my back to the riser and make my stand. It doesn't get better than that! Songwriting at its finest and making me miss the road real bad. Tired of being cooped up.

One of the all time great song writers, hand down! I drove OTR/48 for about 5 or 6 years but I didn't know this song until it hit the juke boxes all over the place sometime around 1985. I started driving in late '85 after I paid and took a two week advanced Truck driving course in Houston, TX. I graduated 'summa cum laude', (LOL, just kidding, but I did hold the highest grades in the class and passed all the tests on the first try and with no less than a 98score). In fact, now that I think of it, I drove from late '85 to mid-'91. One of the best jobs I ever had, (once I tied in with the right company). But it was one of the most turbulent times in my life as well. I wound up buying the Steve Earl double LP that had this song and later, I bought the double CD version. Jimmy LaFave was another one of the great writers/singers, as was Lyle Lovett, and all from in this era. Check them out when you get a chance. FWIW, Rich

Best non-truck driving/ Truck driving song ever. Nothing like 2-3 in the morning. Getting 5-6 trucks that knew what they doing out in the hammer lane. Didn’t care about speeding tickets. Just turned them in with your paperwork.and the boss paid. Never see any brake lights but when the Jakes came on you slowed down. Had 3 different state drivers license.Retired now but damn you miss it.

The red dirt or Texas country scene that has taken flight over last 20 years .. the origins are often argued . I’m a firm believer that Steve was Texas Country catalyst . All the Ragweeds and Randy Rogers , Earle was doing it in 1982. Charlie Robison said Texas Country was guys who listened to the Stones on Friday night , and George Jones in Saturday night .. that would make Steve Sunday I guess .
