I always felt Steve's delivery and sound was so much more personable than Frank's. He sometimes seemed, to me, like Judy Garland was when she performed...almost as if a freak of nature - a song - is escaping from their body, and they're at its mercy!

If it’s up to me, the truly great musicians will not be lost via the passage of time, music like this is timeless in my opinion.

I've heard the song "I've Gotta Be Me" about as much as I've heard any song. This is one of Sammy Davis's signature songs but I've always felt that Steve sang it better and with more power. I just heard yesterday that Steve left us, and I started listening to his songs, and I cried because we've lost so many from yesteryear. When I was a kid, we'd see him on The Carol Burnett Show and Eydie Gorme, and he did comedy brilliantly. RIP Steve! ❤

This song comes from the Broadway show “Golden Rainbow” which starred Steve (and Eydie), so Steve sang it first. In fact, he recorded it on a 45 before the show opened, doing it somewhat differently from how he did it in the show. But he apparently suggested to his friend Sammy Davis, Jr. that the song would have a lot of meaning for him, and it was a bigger hit for Sammy than for Steve.

Steve - and another underrated song 'n' dance man, Ken Berry - were always introduced by Carol Burnett as "one of my favorite" people! She often mentioned that she considered them as "semi-regulars" on her show...Steve was on 29 times, Ken was on 19. It's also been mentioned that his turn - and Tony nomination - in "What Makes Sammy Run?" was proof of his range of talents: singing, acting, comedy...all facets that made him a natural for the Burnett show! My favorite Stephen Lawrence songs? I Wanna Be With You (I melt!), and Twas the Night Before Christmas (makes me feel all warm and fuzzy!). Many more songs, if I think too long about it! LOVE me some Steve Lawrence. Wasn't the handsomest of men, but his presence, smile, and personality made him GORGEOUS!!
