On this topic a friend said, “As reformed people, we have to keep in mind that theology does not equal morality.” We need to get these men off of the pedestals we tend to put them on simply because we like their theology. We need to pray for them more, searching our own hearts in the process. We all have such a desperate need for God’s Grace to walk in obedience, not just good theology.

All Ligonier doctors, pastors, and ministers should begin showing true repentance by forsaking their titles and positions of authority among the brethren. Titles like "Pastor" or "Doctor" elevate individuals and create divisions within the body of Christ, contrary to Jesus' teaching that we are all equal under God (Matthew 23:8-12). True repentance means humbling themselves, rejecting worldly status, and embracing the servant-leadership modeled by Christ. It's time for these leaders to abandon titles and restore humility, accountability, and equality within the church. Only then can the body of Christ function as it was intended-without hierarchy or power plays.

It true though, we all sin. The devastation may not be the same but the underline factor is still the same, all of us have that hidden sin which just seems not to go away. God always let His servants fall just as He did with the " man after God's heart", David. The devastation of his sin did not stop on him alone but his family as well, death by the sword. But God could not let David be lost on Him. I belonged to such a Church that brought their members to the congregation to confess their sin publicly and they did not spare a Senior Pastor who fell into sin of adultery. I remember many members getting really upset, but the leadership of the Church could not compromise their standard of discipline. Some years later, after close observation he was restored. I think this is a honest way to keep Christisns disciplined ~ rebuked publicly as Paul teaches and also uncompromising discipline of the Church. This pastor first confessed to his wife!

Amen. I think Reformed churches have big problems going back to Erasmus and Martin Luther. In March 2024 I did a video about his false teaching on divorce and remarriage though he was correct on rebuking Alistair Begg (also a falseteacher on divorceandremarriage). You can't preach that there are excuses for divorce and remarriage because the Bible says that only after the death of your covenant spouse can you remarry. All these names you are mentioning are false teachers on divorce and remarriage. I am the innocent divorced woman, and I have obeyed Jesus not to remarry for 16 years (42 years married) and by God’s grace have lived celibate. Steve is going to be judged for condoning adultery just like John MacArthur. Hebrews 13:4, Revelation 2, Luke 16:14-18, Mark 10:2-12 and many more. Praying for his wife. Adultery can be forgiven, but you have to go and sin no more. Allie, check every preacher on divorce and remarriage adultery, and then you will know if they are Pharisees. The Pharisees said you could divorce and remarry, but Jesus said no. Only a Jewish betrothed man could divorce his betrothed virgin wife IF she fornicated with another man before the betrothed husband had taken her to consummate their marriage like Joseph was going to divorce Mary for FORNICATION (though she was still a virgin). There is no exception for divorcing for adultery. It's pretty terrible because hypocrites, adulterers and fornicators will not go to heaven in the pre-Tribulation rapture which is imminent.

Amen!! We are all sinners saved by grace. That said, according to the Word of God, teachers are held to a higher standard BECAUSE of their influence - especially on those who are seeking and/or are babes in Christ. I've been a born again follower of Jesus for over 43 years and I have lost count of how many prominent, celebrity, head/senior pastors have had to step down from ministry or were kicked out of their church due to the sin of ADULTERY. If we knew how many pastors are addicted to pornography, (which is also ADULTERY- looking with lust at a woman who is not their wife) the vast majority of churches would be without a pastor. That said, the unbiblical model of having a head or senior pastor (aka: BIG MAN ON CAMPUS) has proven to be a recipe for disaster. The biblical model for church leadership is to have a PLURALITY of elders, ie: pastors/shepherds/bishops/overseers (all synonymous with "elder") co-leading/serving/ministering to the body of believers in the local church - sharing the responsibility and "work" including that of teaching, discipling and church discipline - and being accountable to one another - and ideally doing this work as a ministry onto the Lord - NOT as a job or career. Jesus warned about the shepherds being replaced by unfaithful "hirlings" and that is exactly what has happened in this Laodicean church age in the vast majority of evangelical churches. :(

He spoke on Isaiah chapter 6 and I still remember the message. Although Steve disqualified himself from ministry, God's word is true. Our pastor at Countryside Bible Church in Southlake addressed our church this past Sunday about Steve Lawson. Our pastor read the statement from Trinity Bible Church. He stated that we follow Christ and not a man. He also reviewed the qualifications of an Elder, saying that an Elder must be above reproach and a one woman man. Then, our pastor prayed for Trinity Bible Church, all the people involved and for Steve Lawson. In our church's media archives, Steve's name has been deleted from the speaker lineup of the past conferences at our church where he was one of the speakers. Our women's church prayer group and our entire church are and have been praying for everyone involved. Our women's prayer group has been praying regularly for our church's elders and pastoral staff faithfully for the last 6 and a half years. We recognize how important it is to pray for our pastors and elders and our congregation. God continues to build His church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

I bet you don’t apply Jesus’ words “get up and walk” to those with back injuries. I’m also questioning why you feel the need to tell everyone else to forgive this man. He was one of my top teachers I loved listening to after RC Sproul. His ministry and work with Ligonier really blessed me. I’m heartbroken with the news. I pray for his family, his wife, Trinity Bible Church and him. The reformed world is shaken right now, but Christ is head of his church and I think it’s caused many in the pulpit to examine their own hearts.
@1WhipperinАй бұрын
@keith8325Ай бұрын
@1Whipperin Really? Christ founded a hierarchical church that has been retained via Apostolic succession. His succession plan included a system guided by the Holy Spirit to remain united (his final prayer "That they may be one " (Jn 17:21). But the Reformers protested, removing themselves from Christ's Church, and the rest is history. Blessings, praying for our separated brethren.
@1WhipperinАй бұрын
@keith8325 Really. Jesus never established a formal hierarchy resembling the structured organizations that exist in some Christian traditions today. Instead, His emphasis was always on servant leadership, humility, and the equality of all believers. Jesus clearly taught against the pursuit of power and hierarchical authority. In His ministry, He reminded His disciples not to exercise authority over others as the rulers of the world do. He said that those who wish to be great must become servants, and those who wish to be first must be slaves to all. His own life modeled this principle, as He came not to be served but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many. This teaching directly opposes the idea of a rigid church hierarchy where some have authority over others. Further, Jesus emphasized the equality of all His followers. He warned against seeking titles or positions of superiority. He instructed that no one should call another "rabbi" or "father" in a religious sense because all believers are brothers and sisters under one Father, God, and one teacher, Christ. This reinforces the notion that in the community of believers, there is no place for one person to elevate themselves above others through titles or hierarchical power. The New Testament also teaches that the Holy Spirit is the one who leads believers into truth. Rather than a human structure of authority, the early church was guided by the Holy Spirit. Decisions were often made collectively with prayerful dependence on God’s Spirit, as seen in key moments of early church history. This Spirit-led model further challenges the idea that Christ intended a hierarchical system to govern His followers. Additionally, the New Testament promotes the concept of the "priesthood of all believers." Every Christian has direct access to God and is part of a royal priesthood. This idea removes the need for a special class of priests or leaders to mediate between believers and God. All are equal before God, and all share in the responsibility of proclaiming His message. This again points away from a hierarchical system where only a few have special authority over others. The early church, as described in Acts, operated with a communal leadership model, rather than a top-down hierarchy. The believers shared their lives, their resources, and their responsibilities in a spirit of mutual care and unity. Leadership was shared among elders and other servants, but all were accountable to one another and to Christ as the true head of the church. In light of these teachings, it is clear that the claim of Christ founding a hierarchical church conflicts with the principles He taught and the example set by the early church. His message was one of service, equality, and reliance on the Holy Spirit, rather than the establishment of a rigid system of authority.

@@1Whipperin The hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees in Mt 23 is an expose of corruption among Israel's teachers. It is also a warning to Christian leaders of the pitfalls to be avoided in pastoral ministry. Jesus warns that one who exalts himself can expect the day of reckoning to bring humiliation (7 woes). However, one who humbles himself will be exalted by God. We are warned against the sinful desire or affection for honorific titles. Addressing your desire to remove titles: Christ unquestionably formed an authoritative, hierarchical church before his departure. Christ is head of the body, the Church (Col 1:18). We have many parts, but are one body in Christ (Rom 12:4-5). His Church is authoritative, not by leaders "rising themselves up" but rather by Christ choosing and appointing his leaders (Jn 15:16). Jesus gave the apostles his own mission (Jn 20:21) with hierarchical leadership (Eph 4:11). He identifies specific roles of bishops, priests, and deacons (I Tim 3:1,8;5:17) and commissions the bishops to ordain priests (Titus 1:4-16). As in his Epistles to Timothy, Paul speaks to bishop Titus of the importance of doctrinal unity in the Church. He stresses the authority and duties of the bishop to faithfully and accurately teach the Gospel and to select sound men to SUCCEED him as Bishops. Paul instructs Titus to "declare, exhort, and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you"( Titus 2:15). Prior to Our Lords ascension, Jesus gathers his eleven at a mountain and delegates all power to his Apostles (Mt 28:18-20). Elsewhere, He grants power to forgive sin (Jn 20:23), power to offer sacrifice (I Cor 11:23-24), power to speak with Christ's voice (Lk 10:16), power to discipline and legislate (Mt 18:17-18). He didn't leave us orphans. The Holy Spirit guides his leaders into all truth (Jn 16:13). via "the pillar and foundation of truth, that is the Church" (I Tim 3:15). Christs church is one, holy, catholic, and apostolic, with the promise to prevail to the end (Mt 16:18). Our leaders are, as you stated, and Christ commands to be servants. Our leaders are chosen (rather than self elevated) and are called to live the virtues of chastity, poverty, and obedience. These men "made themselves eunichs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it" (Mt 19:12). Imagine a large company with no stated leadership. It would devolve into chaos and then extinction. And so it goes to those who have removed themselves from Christ's authoritative, hierarchical structure. Christ's succession plan is powered by the paraclete, and allows for Christ's final prayer to be answered"That they all may be one "(Jn 17:17) with "no divisions among you"(I Cor 1:10). What a marvelous church Christ founded....who founded your church?

I have not heard or read any comment that expresses or allows for the future choice his wife has under scripture. I have heard, “let’s pray for the restoration of his marriage” while also, “he should not be restored to ministry”. While Lawson’s sin is against God first and foremost, the next in line is his wife even before the church. If we are so certain he should not be restored to ministry, why in the world do we expect his marriage to be restored? She has every right to divorce him if she chooses, and I hope that the call to restoration does not pin her into a corner of believing she has to stay with him for “the greater good” of demonstrating forgiveness and restoration. She can forgive him and have an amicable relationship with him for the sake of the Gospel and for their family, but if his marriage does not survive this, that is a consequence of his sin and not his wife’s.

If this were someone from the Charismatic camp, the response would be more along the lines of "what did you expect?" Be doers of the word and not hearers only. I think a big part of the problem with our churches today is that the way church is set up now a days is we arrive at church and listen to one man preach at us for an hour roughly and think we can be united as a body of Christ. Some churches do the small group thing and that’s great but some people are going through very difficult trials in life and sometimes feel ashamed about how their life is going at that moment and need ministry on a personal level but at the same time don’t feel well enough spiritually to put on the fake smile and shake hands at small groups. I think it’s a great tragedy in today’s churches. I think the reason this happens so much today is because most people in church are so broken because our world is so messed up now.

Our session will be meeting to discuss whether or not we should continue the study. Very sad.

Why wouldn’t you continue the study?? Do you think Lawson isnt a christian anymore??

Great job Alley , this hurt the witness of the true church of Jesus Christ. We all mourn together over Dr. Lawson

This should be a good lesson for reformed crowd not to get too prideful. Even those with good theology fall into sin.
@kevinjypiter6445Ай бұрын
Doesn't reformed theology (Steve Lawson, Sproul, etc) teach we have no free will? Is it only the will of God we are compelled to follow? So I don't think it was Steve Lawson's fault per se, but rather he is following the immutable will of god
@JP-ec9rlАй бұрын
It's horse manure theology. Lawson lost what he never had to begin with. He lost what nobody in the history of anybody has ever had ... Their own righteousness. It doesn't exist. Nobody has ever had it. There is only God's righteousness.

How come we judge this man So Harshly but we don't King David?? David was a man after God's own heart, 1 Samuel 13:14 and Acts 13:22. Why do we have to be part of this man's destruction??

That’s why I would never in my right mind marry someone who was a pastor or in ministry. They have too much emotional access to women.

Thank you so much for pointing out the David example. It definitely feels like a minimization of the gravity of the situation. Honestly, I think that celebrity culture is also an issue in reformed circles. It is unfortunate. We tend to be a bit more severe in examining people of a different camp, and more lenient with the failings of the people in our own camp. THANK YOU FOR YOUR FAIRNESS. So refreshing

Yes I’m so glad she talked about the David example! Especially when it’s so many people’s first response, definitely feels like downplaying wrongdoing!

We have a pastor had committed adultery in our church with a gay man and he is married to a woman and one son, he was keep on preaching in our church until his wife told our head conference office, he betrayed our trust and now he left his wife to be with this man. temptation is far to great, we have to be connected to God and His Holy Spirit.

I used to listen to Steve Lawson and his series of podcasts weekly. About a year ago, I was listening to his most recent sermon and I was immediately disgusted by a remark he made to a mother in his congregation. In the middle of his sermon, he abruptly stopped and said, "Can we remove the children, please? It sounds like we have a whole nursery in the back." As a mother with young children, I was disgusted by this. I understand young children in the church can be very distracting but wow, there are so many other ways to go about this. If that was me, I would have been mortified and never would of returned - feeling as if my children were not welcomed. I stopped listening to him immediately. I'm shocked to hear this news about him, though.

In our church, children are welcome, even crying kids during worship, are life sounds

Jesus says, “let the children come.” He rebuked his disciples sharply for hindering children 😭 so sad to hear! Weirdly, about a year ago, a pastor at my church said he would not encourage a young man to imitate Steve Lawson…I didn’t fully agree at first, but now it feels almost prophetic. God bless you, miss.

That's irrelevant to this issue. If babies/children are screaming to the point where people can't hear and the speaker needs to shout to be heard, the parents need to take them out of the auditorium until they settle down.

This story is part of the reason our family converted to Orthodox Christianity. During services, every stitch of clothing our priests wear symbolize their role in the parish, in The Church, etc. They even wear a stole around their neck (the translation for this piece of clothing from the original Greek is literally “The Thing Around The Neck” 😆) . Anyway, this stole has fringe at the bottom and that fringe is meant to symbolize the souls of the congregation the priest leads. It’s a constant reminder of the burden priests carry to properly shepherd their flock. Most Orthodox priests (and their wives for that matter) are VERY humble, sweet, loving, GOOD men. Our priest is the most humble man I’ve ever met and his wife is so authentic and lovely. I personally truly found Christ in the Orthodox Church. I’m experiencing the Christian faith WAY different than I did as a Protestant. Glory to God! ☦️☦️☦️

I just want to make the comment that I am absolutely so thankful for your beautiful approach to this. I love that you are considering all things, are approaching it with love, even though it’s really clear that you’re devastated by the news. Thank you for being a great role model to women around the world.

Not to mention that he is a false teacher, teaching false doctrine AND also, idolized. Just like macArthur is. They have a form of godliness, but deny the power. The saddest part is how many people they have fooled. 💔😖

I really enjoy your show because you love the truth like I do, you represent Christianity very well and your knowledge is up there where it needs to be to be in the public eye ... My husband always says he only trusts the dead theologians. It's so hard not to get so disappointed. My dad is a pastor, my husband is a pastor. I just don't understand why so many fall. It's so sad.

My dad had a music ministry, somewhat famous in the day (you prob never heard of him unless you knew Paul Rader Jr of the tabernacle in Minneapolis MN - he sang there and on the radio). But so confusing to me as his daughter bc not only did he have affairs, but he also did so much "spirit writing" that our house became haunted and we had to get an exorcist after he left. It left me so spiritually confused. Even to this day I pretty much assume that any Christian with a large following is a fake.

Yes Good Point .... I think God has revealed this in order to shine the light that these traveling , popular preachers need to remember that the local Church is their first and foremost responsibility.
