Brilliant video Steve. The Gobbins path was constructed as a tourist attraction over 100 years ago before falling into disrepair. I can remember going down to it in the 70's when we stayed at a rented cottage that my grandparents had a few miles away, but you could only go a little way on it. We spent all summer down on Islandmagee and it was the best place to be a kid. Theres a walk from Whitehead station along the seafront to the lighthouse that is a lovely walk too and not that far from the Gobbins. One thing you didnt seem to do was go into the Rinkha and have an ice cream which is a home made recipe and imo the best ice cream going...but im biased lol

@BigTubz Жыл бұрын
@@barvdw There are hourly buses from the international airport and I'm pretty sure it's the same from the city, I think it's Ulsterbus number 261. Either would be less than 2 hours travel time. Belmore court motel in Enniskillen would be a budget friendly base, don't be fooled by the name, I've stayed in worse hotels for 3 times the price. The owner Terry will be extremely welcoming. If you're set on a hotel, the Manor house or Killhevlin. Plenty of Airbnb options too. Plenty to keep you busy around the county town. Couple of beautiful national trust houses, Florencecourt, Castlecoole and Castle Archdale. Enniskillen castle, Devenish Island and a pint of G in the beautiful Victorian era pub, Blakes of the hollow.

You can also get the train for the Gobbins from Lanyon Place Station (formerly Belfast Central) which is far, far handier to the city centre than Yorkgate.
@stanislavkostarnov2157 Жыл бұрын
though somehow a very enchantedly-Celtic landscape it reminds me in spirit of place of the Tottori-Iwaki-coast (a somewhat remote piece of west-Japanese coastline)... That footpath weaves through tiny crevices, that form the edge of what are literally cliffs and small hill sized boulders, covered in a sparse forest of millennia old natural "giant bonsai" (mostly pines, cedar, & camphor-trees) that look semi-petrified by time. a uniquely beautiful and alien place.. the main difference, it's unguided, 12miles long, & neither the path, nor the multiple 50ft-200ft ladders, nor the bridges (most of which are just wooden planks between one boulder and another), are fenced... though you have well maintained chains or rope to hold onto to all the way... the day I went was early autumn, so the weather was in around 35 Celsius, it was truly beautiful with a lightly misty sky & the deep aquamarine blue of the Japanese Sea... the fragrance of hot rock, sea-salt & pine resin was beyond description, as were the geological formations & remote tiny coral beaches along the way... by the end of it, I nearly collapsed onto the bus seat... it did not feel along the way, but in summary, the trek took me about 14 hours, & I was truly totally absolutely knackered!!!!

Steve - thanks for coming to our part of County Antrim! Your train will have passed by our house just as it left Whiteabbey (first station after Yorkgate)! We really enjoyed the video. When you come back to the Gobbins you need to check out the Rinka at Ballystrudder for ice cream. You may also be interested to learn that the Gobbins Path was part of the complex of attractions which the Belfast & Northern Counties Railway had to encourage passengers to travel to Whitehead (the station befoer Ballycarry). Before the railway came Whitehead didn't exsist! The B&NCR constructed a prom, the path to Blackhead Lighhouse (you can stay in the lightkeepers' cottages nowadays) and the Gobbins. I'm told that they brought a train-load of sand from Portrush to make a beach , and that more folk went to the Gobbins than travelled to the Giants Causeway at a time. In fact so many were going that the railway had to make a special Excursion Station at Whitehead to accommodate the trains. That site is now home to the Railway Presevation Society of Ireland, and from there we run steam excursions occasionally. I'm a volunteer tour guide at whitehead Railway Museum and we'd love to see you (or any other viewers) any Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Brian
