Stevie Ray loved Jimi Hendrix. In an interview in 1985, he said: “I love Hendrix’s music and I just feel it’s important for people to hear him. I know if I take care of his music that it will take care of me. I treat it with respect-not as a burden. See, I still listen to Hendrix all the time, and I doubt I’ll ever quit."

SRV would never say he would be put above Jimmi Hendrick, he was the most humble man, admired & respected all the ones that came before him. He was an overcomer too, getting sober beford he passed. God Rest his soul.

Truth. There's a story about Stevie going ballistic on a promoter because when he showed up to the gig BB King was playing. He asked the promoter what was going on and he was told that BB King is the opening act. This was a tremendous injustice to Stevie. Stevie didn't care that his band was the hot band at the time selling millions of dollars of records. He thought that they should be opening for BB King. He valued his heroes and honored them.

Let's not forget he's bending 13 gauge strings like they were made of thread. You need two more songs to determine his place among guitarists? Texas Flood, and Little Wing from the El Mocambo, 1983. When you done with those, then hear everything else he ever did.

I've been a musician since 1977 and have heard all of the greats. Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, etc. They're all insanely talented. But, in my opinion, I do not know of anyone who can do with a guitar (or any other instrument) what he can do or utterly dominate any instrument to the level that he does a with guitar. In terms of the great drummers, singers, groups, etc. where it's so hard to separate one from the pack, to me, Stevie is on a totally different level than his peers. Again, no other guitarist can do the total combination of things he can do at the highest level possible (emotion, speed, technical ability, never plays the same song the same way twice, can make the guitar sound any way he wants to convey his musical interpretation, never been able to read music, can even play like a total beast literally behind his back, ect., etc., etc.). No one has that combination. Not even close. The music just flows from him. Some great videos to get a good feel of his level of talent that would be great to see you react to would be a version of "Voodoo Child" at a Nashville concert in 1983 kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppaWeGqmZr9grrc . Three other songs from probably the best concert he ever performed at a music venue in Toronto called El Mocambo also in 1983 - "Little Wing" (another Jimi cover) kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2eqZmZ4gsyondE , "Texas Flood" (Stevie original) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXSYeWyGaatoi80 , and "Lenny" (Stevie original, a song he wrote for his wife) kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2bWon2Ee6uqp8U . You did an incredible job in this reaction and I really look forward to seeing Stevie reactions to these other song. God bless!

In my opinion, Stevie Ray is the best. That is not meant to minimize the talent of Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton or any other fantastic guitarists. Stevie Ray played from the depths of his soul. Etta James absolutely loved him. I mean, loved the guy. Wrote about him in her autobiography. "Baddest of all the white boys," is what she called him. She went on to say, "He may have been white, but that boy was born with a black soul." Said growing up in abject poverty and in a black neighborhood, that was what he identified with. That's what he knew. It's who he was. You have to figure, Etta James knew what she was talking about. She was a legend in her own right.

Mary- I love this. its a beautiful beautiful quote...you brought tears. Comparisons have never brought grace...they both deserve to be so highly honored, as they honored.... music, and clearly each other. ... I was lucky enough to briefly meet met SRV, in 1983. He stopped at my Dads jewelry business (handmade by Dad/he bought a nice ring for show -he was very happy about it..was wearing it that night --#Keystone- i was too young, for that venue..but have always known good noise when I heard it/extended family in music-RIP most special man, Tim Bogert) Tim loved his life, and felt honored to be able to give, and do what he did. hugs- go see a live show :)

I was blessed to see him perform 10 times. Omg it was a spiritual experience - no exageration. Texas Flood at El Mocombo may be the all time best electric blues performance ever. Watch it and think how many blues licks does this guy do. The blues just blasts out from him. This performance of Voodoo Child is laid back. The Nashville show is the other extreme. It’ll always be SRV for me Harri. That said, you put it perfectly that guitar is art and all opinions are valid and most welcome. Jimi was no doubt more brilliant as a writer/composer, and he is the one who pushed the limits of technique. There’s a reason that Jimi was one of SRV’s great heroes. In any event, I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and thoughts. Also - if truly interested, watch SRV play this same song in Nashville. I’ve never seen anything remotely like it. Best wishes and keep care. Looking forward to following your channel.

When SRV was still Stevie Vaughan he played Hendrix in his sets fairly often. He was on the blues scene but he was considered a hot rod guitarist, less bluesman than his big brother for sure. Stevie was not afraid of excess, Jimmie played with restraint. When he became Stevie Ray Vaughan, he didn't do Hendrix as much, he was worried it was disrespectful and he also didn't want to be a Hendrix act. Other guys did (and do) Hendrix more note-for-note than Stevie did, but Stevie _explored_ and _built on_ Hendrix like nobody else; it wasn't SRV simply doing Hendrix. Hendrix blew his mind just like Jimi did to everybody, but to Stevie it was something he could pay homage to, to celebrate that music with. Stevie had a wah-wah that was Hendrix's, but it was really his brother Jimmie that knew Hendrix personally to any extent; Stevie wasn't quite 16 when Jimi Hendrix died but Jimmie Vaughan was 19 and already a star. When SRV played a Hendrix song, SRV felt that Hendrix was _moving through him_ as if Stevie was just a vessel holding Hendrix's influence, an instrument of Hendrix that the music was forced through. Stevie was pretty spiritual. When he played 3rd Stone from the Sun, you were on a cosmic journey, just like Hendrix took you on. Who can say Stevie was wrong? Stevie probably felt a great connection to this song,: when he played Voodoo Child (slight return) he damn well chopped down moutains with the edge of his hand and then picked up the pieces and built strange fantastic islands of his own.

Hey Harri, I have seen and listened to alot of people and their reactions and besides on other you have the best reactions to StevieRay and right off the top you hit the nail right on the head with the words that you described Stevie Ray. Your words were so true about him and his playing. I don't know if you have read anything about Stevie Ray, but if you could you would read how from beginning to end he never gave up on his ability to keep doing his best. But life doesn't give us any true meaning we make our own choices but Stevie Ray didn't make the choice for his untimely death and the greatest loss to the music world. A awesome human being, humble and soft spoken man with a talent that to this day no one will ever have because there is and was only one Stevie Ray Vaughan....may he rest in peaceful sleep while we still weep......

Texas Flood and Lenny from the el Macambo, life without you from the cotton club, Voodoo Child live in Tokyo, the Cotton Club or Nashville, leave my girl alone, Mary Had a little lamb, tightrope, Cold shot, RIVIERA PARADISE all from Austin to 1990, Tin Pan Alley live Austin City Limits 1983. That’s all just a good place to start. Eric Clapton has said Stevie was the only guitarist that ever intimidated him. That’s saying something.

I just subscribed to your channel for your SRV reaction. There are lots of great guitarists, but none speak to my heart and soul like SRV. He is definitely my favorite. I agree, check out Texas Flood live from the El Macombo. It is amazing! And his album titled Texas Flood is being inducted into the 2021 Grammy Hall Of Fame. And his performance of Life Without You live from the Capitol Theater is also amazing. Really, all of his performances are great.

Most requested show on PBS 'Austin City Limits'. They show it when they're raising money...lol. And that 'bass player' had a solid resume before Double Trouble. BB King said SRV was the only guitar player he'd ever seen that had totally mastered the guitar. Interesting thing about some of the great guitar players, Hendrix and SRV included...they had their 'ah-ha' moment where in a very short time they went from 'pretty good' to great. Jimi wrote that song, btw.

Life without you live at Capitol Theater is A SRV original it's a little bit on the softer side but it's AMAZING also Texas flood live at El mocambo really shows his passion. I say these are the next 2 for you to react to. For me he's number 1 The way that I look at it Jimi was the innovator and Stevie with all respect given to Jimi took the z Jimi sounds and made it much cleaner, sure technology has something to do with that BUT Stevie used Jimi's WAH pedal(the actual one) live on stage every night. So really where did the progress come from.

There was a blues jam where many top blues players of the day were there to perform. One of which was Eric Clapton. Stevie goes on stage and absolutely smashes it. Eric Clapton was scheduled to go on after Stevie. Eric says, “I am supposed to go on after that?!” Enough said.

This song is Voodoo Child ( slight return ) from Electric Ladyland, which also includes Voodoo Child. For a live version of Voodoo Child itself, search out Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood together. Also in a similar vein to SRV and from Texas, ZZ Top. though maybe you know them already.

SRV was not just showing off... he was actually performing out of respect (a tribute) for Jimmy Hendrix. He played left handed... upside down and such because Jimmy was such a big influence. And of course SRV became an inspiration for others too. I remember a cool story where Eric Clapton heard him over the radio and pulled over off the road just to soak in the mastery of this guy. He stated he knew no one who could improvise over and over again w/o any breaks in the transitions or creative changes.

Wonderful reaction. Lenny live at the el Mocambo is an absolutely gorgeous instrumental he wrote for his wife. It never gets old. It takes me on a journey every single time. His guitar is plugged directly into his soul it seems. I hope your curiosity is piqued enough to continue down the SRV rabbit hole. Enjoy!
