I wouldn't call this a comeback by any stretch. His album *Back in the High Life* - released in 1986 - went 3x platinum and won 3 Grammys. *Roll With It* was released just two years after that. However, he hadn't even been away that long, because the last single released from Back in the High Life was "The Finer Things." It was a top ten hit in February 1987. Further, in between those two records came a greatest hits collection titled *Chronicles* and it contained a remix of his 1982 song "Valerie" which also got into the top 10 in December 1987. "Roll With It" was the lead single from the album of the same name, and was released in May 1988, just 5 months later.... but he wasn't even away THAT long! Between the releases of *Back in the High Life* and *Roll With It* Michelob beer was running their "The night belongs to Michelob" television ads, and two of Winwood's songs were used in that campaign: "Talking Back to the Night" and "Don't You Know What the Night Can Do?" The latter was a song on *Roll With It* but the album hadn't yet been released when the commercial containing it was aired. Steve Winwood dominated adult contemporary radio throughout the second half of the 80s, and "Roll With It" was right in the middle of that success.

Here’s a brief list of some Steve Winwood hit songs, that I think you’d really enjoy.. (Notably, Steve has long been a well rounded, highly sought after musician.. and while some of the songs recommended below are his solo pieces, others are from the days when he was part of groups like Blind Faith such as “Can’t Find my way Home” Another big hit and very catchy fave of mine that Lex would probably love, that he sang when in the Spencer Davis group was “Gimme Some Lovin” (plus the hard hitting, “I’m a man) now for some of his solo hits check out: “Back in the High Life again” “Higher Love” “Valerie” to name just a few. This man has an amazing catalogue of music, well worth a deep dive into!❣😁👍❣

I'ts true . People worked just to get by and enjoyed life . We all had smaller homes and old cars . No cell phones no internet ,No cable television until the 80s to pay for .We use to say let it roll off you like a ducks back . And the fact that we had parents that went through world war 2 and the great depression made them have a thankfulness for the things they had and they instilled this in us .

Steve Winwood released an excellent song called VALERIE in very early 80s, which hit the top 100 but the strong keyboard sound was fairly new, so it was kinda forgotten. Fast forward to late 80s and he re-recorded VALERIE and released again, this time with a stronger keyboard sound. It was an even bigger hit. Both versions are worth a reaction. Beautiful song.

Lex you are so right about the lack of “grind culture” 30 or 40 years ago. I was raised in the 1980s by a janitor and a nurse, and so I had absolutely no expectation or even possibility of ever being rich. The idea just never entered my mind. This notion today of anybody can just HUSTLE HUSTLE HUSTLE and be wealthy by 25, true or not, just wasn’t around back then. As a result I think people were much more content to enjoy simpler things. Now everybody thinks IG is real life (it’s not) and everybody is in a race to get rich so they don’t have to work.
