I grew up near a military training ground in Germany. There were also troops from the Netherlands training there and they often didn't eat the biscuits because they were hard and didn't really taste like much. It was always a little treasure for us when we found some rations or parts of it. Not only because we were very poor but also because it was something special.

That's a trip down memory lane. I was a 10 year old boy when that MRE was made. Most of the contents are products that were available to anyone in the supermarkets, including the stuff in the plain packaging, like the teabag. The main meal may look like it's specifically made for the army, but slipped in a paper sleeve with nice printing, it was sold in supermarkets too. I know because I ate quite a few when both parents were at work and I was old enough to heat them au bain marie myself. The biscuits with that heavy foil packaging are probably the only army specific product in this MRE.

Fun to see a ration from my country reviewed here. You, sir, are a brave man, every bit as brave as the soldiers that were supposed to eat it, albeit for other reasons hahah! Its not actually tissue paper, but just a package of disposable paper handkerchiefs, its a well known regular brand thats normally available in civilian stores here in the netherlands up to this very day, they also make toilet paper and kitchen towels. I probably have one of those exact packages lying around the house. LOL that cheese is supposed to be semi-liquid and NOT solid....,its supposed to be spread on sandwiches or crackers.its a pretty common bread topping over here, tho not when it has been 'matured' and dried for 30 years LOL . Funny enough, many things, like the jam and liver paté containers, you could, and can still buy at regular supermarkets. Its just commercially available stuff. You get the same containers with your meals in hospital or sometimes in lunchrooms. (the 'hero' on the jam tins is just the brand, although it is a funny choice to give to soldiers, who ofc are heroes!) Even the instant soup is from a brand that still exists. looks like they just ripped off the cardboard outer box that they come in in the supermarket and stuffed the satchels in that pack. "jamin" was also a commercial retail brand of chocolate. Its a bar you could have picked up at their stores in 1985, my granny used to give me these exact ones (if the 'better ones' from our town's pride 'verkade factory ' were not available- yup, chocolate chauvinism! haha..) the dextrose tablets and the fruitmix same thing, any retailer that had a candy selection, even a gas station, carried those. Almost looks as if someone slapped together an aid package from their kitchen cupboard, haha. Weird tho that they slapped those pate tins in there, as everything in the selection would probably have had exp dates in excess of 5 or 10 years, but those pate things last for maybe a year. Guess just throwing the whole box away because it had some relatively perishable things in it was ok, anything for not having to eat russian rations, i guess... Actually, the dinner tins and the biscuits were sometimes for sale commercially too. i guess around the end of the 80's when the cold war fizzled and the armies got downsized, much of this stuff was dumped through cheap outlet stores. When i had just moved out on my own, i sometimes had these army dinner tins. Black beans and pork. meat, peas and ptatoes, just what the boys would get from mommy at home too.. they were a bit bland and boring, everything being mixed together, but nourishing and filling. And easy ofc, just need to heat it and you're go. I sometimes took them on camping trips. Tasted much better in the crisp forest air when hungry of a days hiking. The biscuits were quite edible, i had a few boxes of those too at some point. There is actualy a commercial brand that makes pretty similar ones, its called "Liga" they come in many different kinds and flavors... these biscuits would be like their 'au naturel' ones. Its biscuit with some coarse grainy rye like bits in it. Several types of dutch biscuit-like cookies have that same texture. "Douwe egberts" is also a regular commercial luxury coffee brand from the netherlands, although i never saw this freeze dried version in any store. I guess they had a special production line for the army coffee. You actually pronounce the "ou' as in 'loud' and the "e" more flat , like in appartment. Teabags, kanis&gunnink, another retail brand, just repackaged in military foil... Typically dutch, to save money, half the package is filled with standard, off the shelf stuff that you can just buy wholesale or from supermarkets... but of course we will spare no expense to give you a nice, morale and patriotism inspiring custom match box with the dutch royal logo! a cheap standard pack of matches that you can pick up at any store would be unthinkable, hahah! Its important to have the priorities straight of course. the 1978 date on the lemonade powder (is not its fabrication or expiry date tho. It says "conforms to [ some serial number] 1978 B" so its probably the date that a certain standard was instated to which lemonade powder for the army had to adhere or something. The package says "lemonade powder, lemon flavour.30 grams, dissolve contents in 1/2 drinking cup +/- 250 cc of cold water" The bottom small print lists the manufacturer and the town they were based (i guess so soldiers would know where to get more when they were back home and wanted to trigger their PTSD by tasting stuff they had had during combat, lol) Just some background info incase it might interest you, as a thank-you for making this brave and informative video (never knew the army actually used so many off the shelf commercial products, i would have expected all kinds of olive drab white or khaki tins and packages with boring standardized print, but maybe a little color and familiarity from home would be just what morale needed.)

If the cheese was real cheese and not processed cheese it could probably been edible still. Cheese doesn’t actually go bad it just loses moisture even blue cheese can be eaten decades later. I’ve tried 80 year old cheese from my family’s dairy farm that my great great aunt made in 1910. I tried it when I was 15 in 1990. She had made 550 pounds of it and when I tried it they had been eating it with every dinner meal since the fall of 1910. My great uncle who was actually a cousin told me when it was first made it was a soft cheese and when I tried it it was harder than Parmesan reggiano that was aged for 5 years. It had a really strong blue cheese flavour but was incredibly good.

I have to admit I don't know what I love more: when you find horrors like with this one or when you find perfectly (in some ways and at some times shockingly so..) edible food. Again, though, you are one of my internet heroes for doing this.

Dude, nobody's gonna sell you health insurance after learning you eat food as old as you are just for fun.
