40 years ago when I was 15 I bought a rifle off a mate who needed quick cash , it was a Webley Excel and I got it for 10 quid. I still have it and recently started using it again after nearly 40 years , I've put a new Hawke sight on it and it shoots pretty darn good still. Enjoying revisiting my youth. Ps. Back in the day it was usual for kids to be roaming the woods with air rifles , no-one batted an eyelid back then 😊

I've just bought a Milbro Camo .22 springer. Only been to my local indoor range twice and im already hitting the centre of the targets. My first day I was lucky to hit the target. I watched Steves video on how to shoot a springer, and it has helped a lot. Knowing how to hold the artillery way and controlled breathing has made all the difference. I'll keep the Milbro for about 6 month before upgrading. Thanks for the beginners videos Steve.👍👍👍

James Mcginn I found Steve’s video on how to shoot a springer really helpful too James. Having tried a low cost PCP I felt drawn to a decent quality springer and thanks to watching the video, I’m getting better accuracy than I was with the low end PCP, although this could be down to a poor quality scope. Although I’ve watched this after buying my rifle, I’ve been reassured by what Steve says that a springer is a good starting point and by developing your skill with it you can get decent results fairly quickly.

Hello Steve. Thankyou so much for producing these videos for beginners like me. In 2020, I'll be 50. I've wanted an air rifle all my life. Air rifles were my father's lifelong passion. As I have a twin brother and always treated equally, we were never allowed them for obvious reasons. This year, I purchased my Springer air rifle and absolutely adore it. We lost our massively loved father two years ago and now beginning air rifle shooting have so many questions for him. It real!y is a minefield out there, what people tell you. There are practical tutorials on line that look good, but reading the comments you find they are incorrect and if followed would cost money to rectify. I didn't know anything about artillery hold. Some say clean the barrel before using because of debris left in by manufacturer. Others say under no circumstance put anything in the barrel because you'll be wiping the lead off and that's what lubes the barrel. I hope you've found my points interesting from a beginners point of view and would love to hear from you. Your films are fantastic and informative and you come across as a very polite gentleman who genuinely wants to help people like me just starting out. Thankyou very much for help and for thinking of us. Best wishes, Ian. Ps. Can you recommend a good pellet for the BSA Lightning XL .177 please?

For pellets mate get yourself sum samples of different brands then shoot sum paper targets to see which give the best groups, I would recommend jsbs, air arm fields, Bisley mags and a Chinese pellet called qys are getting cracking reviews but whichever shoots the best through your rifle stick with that brand 👍 hope this will help happy shooting!

BSA Mercury .22 .. over the years ( and a sizable gap in usage ) I decided replace the worn out original spring ( wouldnt even go through a beer can ) with a Titan spring ( available from most RFD's ) ... and compared too my ( recently purchased) PCP's is absolutely uncontrollable .. unsure of the power its producing now , and aint got round too chronographing it yet ... all said and done .. its about as accurate as turd fired from a cannon .. " still " I agree with you .. a springer would be best for a beginner ... dont use mine any more , but its sentimental too me , and ill never get rid ... great vid .. and a good insight into air gunning for the begginer ... keep it up ...

Well, I'm relatively new to air gunning, but I did a little research and I initially was going springer, breakbarrel, single shot and realized one shot at a time was not enough, and going to a PCP, needing a tank or a compressor was expensive, so I found what for me was the perfect gun...it's the Seneca Aspen, comes in .177, .22 and .25...I wanted the biggest bore I could get...it comes with 2 mags, 8 shots in .25 bought 8 more...what is great about this rifle is it has a built in hand pump which makes it self contained, no air tanks or compressors needed, but has a fill probe included so you can use all 3 methods...all you need is pellets or slugs...takes about 80 pumps to go from zero to 3600 psi...if you shoot 5 and pump 5 you can keep a good working pressure...the gun is currently retailing for $299.00 without a scope...its a little beefy but managable...not backyard sound friendly so I put a DonnyFL Sumo moderator... PERFECT! It's not set up for a bipod so I customed fitted a picatinny rail on the pump handle attached a clip on bipod...it is very accurate can easily put shots in the same hole...it is the perfect preppers rifle, just add pellets and a scope...and you're off!

I am one of those people who do not know Jack about guns. The main reason I want to get one is because of rabbits an squirrls getting into my garden. I have watched God only know how many videos. This is by far one of the best videos I have seen. The way you explained what a springer VS a PNP. I am sure your right when you say that a $300 or more rifle is the best way to go. But for me that may be a little over kill. Depending on who you listen to there are some good rifles out there around $100. Some thing that can kill a squirrl or rabbit at 20 - 30 yards or so. And that is really all I need. And as you said if you like it you can always up grade. I like the idea of being about to go out into my back yard an shoot. But I have neighors all around me. So I do not want something crazy powerful.

Definitely start off with a springer, then once one has mastered the challenges inherent with shooting spot-on with the springer, transitioning to anything else be it PCP, CO2, multi-pump, will be a piece of cake. Furthermore, here in Canada, sub 500 FPS/5.2 Joule FPE springers can be purchased for around $100 to $150 without the added costs to obtain a firearms purchase and acquisition license; in Canada, a PCP definitely requires the added expenses to obtain a firearms purchase and acquisition license.

I've got an opinion on this I started out with break barrel air gun springers gas Rams and really in all fairness for a beginner they are bad news they are a lot harder to shoot you have to have the all Tillery hold to be able to shoot these gun really a PCP air rifle isn't it is a better way to go it may cost a little more with a hand pump or a bottle scuba tank to air them up but at the end of the day they are not as hold sensitive they are easier to shoot and you will have lots more fun with them and I would really recommend using a SCUBA tank to air your gun up I have three PCP rifles now actually for cuz I just bought a fourth one scuba tank is the best way to go because I don't care what kind of Hump you buy the air will get heated up and you don't want to put moisture into your gun because that will ruin your seals and cost a lot of money if you don't want to fix it yourself so really if you're not a gun collector like I am because that's my hobby I guess spend the money buy one really nice PCP air rifle and you will be happy with that you can buy a lot of cheap or ones but depending on what you get most of the time you get what you pay for I have got to Benjamin Marauders PCP air rifles 1 in a 22 caliber 25 caliber and I've got a Huntsman Regal PCP rifle that is the best gun that I own. Now I'm not saying that the Marauders do not shoot well because they do but they do not chew like the Huntsman Regal rifle and I just purchased a puncher breaker Mega crawl gun that I am going to try out and see what I think good luck I'm what you guys pick up but always remember most of the time you get what you pay for

Springers are cheaper, teach important techniques and introduce people to air rifles at an affordable cost. Hence why I and many others recommend one as a beginner rifle.

What is the average range of a springer and a PCP air rifle?? Thank you. Very informative video
@4486xxdawson4 жыл бұрын
Depends on what gun you get and where you live , for example i live in canada and can only get a air riffle rated for 500 fps and under without a licance but with a licance they can go up to 1200 fps so thats a factor , if you live in the states no licance required for any air guns exceeding 500 fps lucky ducks , so you need to ask for what gun you have . Some guns can shoot 100 to 150 yards , also what are you planning to shoot ? I wouldnt try and hunt with an air gun at those yardages . Good luck and gappy shooting

Good informative video thanks and I fully agree. I was having the same issue. I bought first a gasram springer and later a PCP. And guess I love springers. The simplicity of a springer I love it. Just grap a box of pellets, the recoil you need to master, the exact same process of holding the gun in order to shoot consistent you need to master, more challenge. There are also springer with a magazine from Gamo. Springers require more skill PCPs are just so artifical. We are lucky here no powerlimitations here. So a 24J springer is funn. I fully agree with the author. Gold video thanks Br Dirk

Pcp to me are rich boys guns , when it cost more for the equipment to fill the gun , then it does to buy the gun , it dont make sence to me , even a good hand pump for pcp cost 200 bucks , i can get a Springer for 200 bucks and use the rest of my cash for a nice scope and pellets and still be under the cost of a low end pcp set up, also the skill to shoot a pcp is low and guys who shoot springer got to get to know the gun to group tight and that takes skill and practice , thats why springers are awesome , i dont think i would shoot a pcp as much for 2 reasons FIRST having to fill it after 50 60 shots because your group drops after that and Two, it wouldnt take long before your board because it groups well all on its own , no learning curve and i like haveing to shoot 500 shots to learn my hold my trigger pull my breathing its just more fun to me . @SnowblindOtter4 жыл бұрын
Good affordable entry PCP rifles are the Umarex Gauntlet, Gamo Urban, or Hatsan Flash or FlashQE. These are all fairly inexpensive, but they all have their own advantages that the others don't. If you want one that is easy to get your hands on, get the Gamo Urban. If you want one that prioritizes beauty and power, get the Hatsan Flash or FlashQE. If you want a rifle that is solid and consistent, the Umarex Gauntlet is the only regulated PCP air rifle for less than 500USD. They all three can be filled with a Hill hand pump, and they all three come with a moderated(Suppressed/Silenced) option straight out of the box. In .22 they're all capable of hunting, they all have outstanding accuracy out to 100 yards in all calibers available, and if you want to go bigger the Hatsan and Umarex rifles are available in .25 caliber as well.

Would you be better off learning to drive in a modern car with power steering, power ABS brakes, light clutch and positive synchro gearbox or learning on a 60s car with manual steering, drum brakes, heavy clutch and column gearchange (not to mention crap seats)? In the same way that you will drive more accurately and easily with a modern car you will hit the target with much less effort and more consistently with a PCP or Co2 rifle. And you won't be discouraged as you may be with a cheap springer or gas-ram as you try to learn how to hold it properly the same way every single shot. You will have to buy a Weirhrauch HW 97, Walther LGV or LGU, or an AA TX200 to match the accuracy of even a cheap PCP and they weigh a ton. My recommendation for a first rifle is the QB 97 which is featherlight, recoilless and accurate. £140 new and a bit more expensive to run but good to shoot. By the way, I love classic cars .... on the right day and on the right road. For commuting to work and motorway stuff my modern rules. I love my springers too but for pest control I use a PCP because it's so easy and accurate to shoot without effort. And even if crows and magpies are vermin I don't want to wing them.

Excellent series Steve. I’ve been an Australian field archer and hunter for 16 years and am now interested in air rifles for competition and rabbit hunting. Ive joined a club and awaiting my licence to enable purchase of a rifle. Thanks these videos are very helpful.

Like I said before I think a PCP is the only way to go if you want to have fun if you are a hunter and you want accuracy no matter how you hold the gun once you get it sighted in it will be dead on depending on the gun you buy will cost you more then most of your break barrels or underlever gun but you will be more accurate with a PCP gun I have had both and I have gotten rid of all of my break barrels and my underlever gun because of this but I cannot stress this enough you should go with a SCUBA tank to fill your gun because hand pumps will put moisture into your gun and will ruin your seals and that can cost a lot of money to get repaired and I know scuba tanks aren't cheap but once you buy it you can air up all your PCP gun and I take my tank into a scuba shop and it doesn't seem to matter what size of tank you take in I can get that tank filled for $5.50 and be able to fill my gun from 2000 PSI 2 3000 psi and with a tank you can top off your gun lots of times and filling the scuba tank is really cheap

Don, each to their own. I too prefer PCP's for many of the reasons you give, but many will argue that springers are the way to go. The nice thing with this sport is we can do either and what ever suits us.

I'm thinking of adding a multi-shot Gamo Swarm Maxxim .22 cal gas piston break barrel at 900 fps for small game (Not for self defense) to my survival kit. IMHO, PCP air guns are too heavy and have too many accessories to carry for survival. Does anyone else have a Constructive opinion?
@airgunology5 жыл бұрын
Survival is something I keep out of my channel and is only really a USA thing. Anything springer that you are happy with will do.
@mrdino53115 жыл бұрын
@@airgunology Thanks Steve, For an extra $100 I think I'll try out the Gamo Swarm Magnum .22 cal. It's a long heavy rifle and the barrel break is 45 pounds but I like the extra 100 fps velocity for small game.

really good, do you have to change the spring along the line?
@airgunology5 жыл бұрын
Eventually yes, it will wear out. A gun shop will do it for you, or if you check youtube, and are capable, do it yourself.

Look at the BSA springers or BSA Ultra's PCP's. They are good value for money and decent rifles.

Ah, If I can get hold of one, will do a follow up review on one. I was trying to keep this beginner series to basics and cover the main 2, PCP and Springer. Obviously there are many other types of air rifle out there and probably some that I have never heard of before. Thanks

I have the Crosman 2240, awesome pistol and so cheap, I do like CO2 air guns just for the replica pistols, the Walther under lever is an awesome bit of kit and uses the 88g CO2 cans. Love your BSA Steve, been meaning to pick one of those tactical rifles up for ages but keep putting it off. PCP, Springer, CO2, personally I love em all . Great video man and I agree on your recommendation to start with a springer, spot on advise if you ask me and yes, we'll all probably end up owning one of each in time anyway. ;-) Here are just a few I own, I haven't updated for a bit so not showing all my guns. umarexboysclubforum.myfineforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=21703

Bottom line most people start with a springer and after becoming addicts they spend thier kids college fund on a PCP . I have a springer and love it , i also think about pcp guns , but then i think of all the extras you need to lug around and honestly , i dont got time for that , when i want to shoot it takes 2 minutes to grab my gun and pellets and out back i go , there is no , is my tank full or after 60 shots need to lug out that tank again , with a Springer i can shoot 200 shots and fps is always consistent , yes it takes more discipline to shoot a Springer but thats what i like , im not saying PCP are not nice , man there are some really nice ones i drool over but in the end why spend 10000 on a gun just to bring your groups from half inch to quarter inch . Just my preference for my budget , if i win the lotto im sure i will own a few pcps lol .....

Most springers are ready to go with a tin of pellets, pcp , usually don’t have open sights , but ur right what your saying , I didn’t really have a choice as a 14 yr old kid don’t think you could get a pcp , 40:yrs ago ,,, the first of air technologies I remember was pulling out part of the stock and giving the gun ten pumps ,, ha ha they were the days ,, lots of men with one strong 💪 bicep Cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧

Times change, I too remember when PCP were things of mythical legends and springers were all the common man / kid could get.

The choice between the two just became simple since the introduction of the Gamo Swarm Magnum. This break barrel destroys all the entry level PCP's. Steve, how about comparing the Swarm Magnum in a video? You will lose alot of the PCP crowd.

When it comes to springs tension and compression are opposites. In one part of the video you say it's compression and another part you say it's in tension. It can't be both in the same gun.
@airgunology6 жыл бұрын
compression of course, just mixing my words in the video.
@Romans--bo7br4 жыл бұрын
@@airgunology.... actually, when you (re: anyone) Compress a spring, you Are creating static tension..., on the spring, the cocking mechanism and the entire trigger mechanism, until it is released by the trigger and sear. You have to create Compression of the spring in order to store kinetic energy within the spring, and that.. in itself is Tension on the spring and all the aforementioned parts. Any mechanical spring, whether it is a Compression spring (as used in Airguns), or an Extension spring (as used in trampolines for example)... is always in a Non - tension state while relaxed, and when either extended or compressed to store energy... there is "tension" on it , waiting to be released. Great Videos.... am a subscriber from the mid-western US.

Springer for a beginner all day long, it's better to understand the power & the damage they can do before progressing to a PCP - AND Air is Free with a Springer!! PCP's are not cheap should one decide that shooting is not for them. A half decent Springer can come in at £50 - £100 with open sights - a scope can come later!! get used to it by firing at tin cans etc & make sure you like it before you spend more on something better!!

lmfao - "I hardly ever use my springer and use my PCPs - but i recommend you get the springer" XD Well said. Now more confused than ever. In all fairness, PCP is probably the best to go with, as a newcomer you'll get more dopamine hitting your target and getting into this way whereas getting frustrated from not hitting your target with springer. It's probably best to get both if you like it enough.
@radar21196 жыл бұрын
In the USA we mostly just cruise past the Springer's because we can have any power/energy we want. Springer's are way limited, destroy scopes, ammo picky, and inaccurate. Go straight to PCP, by an inexpensive electric pump and never look back.
@airgunology6 жыл бұрын
You are lucky to have the choice. But there is also an art to shooting lower powered rifles as well as the challenge. Spingers are popular in the USA as well for those reasons.

Love the simplicity of a springer BUT the reloading is fucking tedious!!! Love the repeating action of a pcp rifle. But the limited amount of shots before having to pump it up is tedious.

Well explained, but PCP`s do have recoil. Something goes out one end with 40 joule, there will be the same force acting in the opposite direction. That is basic physics, how can anybody not know this?
