0:30 I would say the blues loss is a better loss, because earlier in the season, there’s more of a focus on “playing the right way”. The leafs lost that point to Montreal because they didn’t “play the right way”. The leafs lost this game to St. Louis because they just had rotten luck. I’ll take this loss because they played well, which is what matters this early in the season.

DUDE! Don't watch the review of the next game then. TB is going to expose some serious holes in the ML defence. Its kind of like the Oilers of old. You have to be so frikkn strong up front just to score more goals then the other team is going to get against you. I predict a 4-1 loss against TB. BTW, Freddie was like Freddie is, When he is hot, he is HOT, When he is not, he SUCKS. Thats the problem with Freddie. He has a good game but man his bad games are BAD. I hope he seeks some counselling. Its almost like he gives up at some point and says "EFFF IT!!!!" Oh well, the Leafs will be playing a sub .500 team soon enough and will get their mojo back.

just as an after thought to "earning" spot you might want to know. the OILERS playoff season lead up had Maroon and Lucic on top 2 lines as LW. Neither one earned the spot, nonetheless, Maroon scored 27 goals and Lucic 23. More goals by them that season then OV.
@2Jim2u5 жыл бұрын
@AKsleepygirl You're really sleepy and the people that pressed Like didn't do their research either. You suckered them in, Shame on you. OV had 33 goals and 36 assists in the 16-17 season leadup to the playoffs, where he scored 5 goals and 3 assists. Both Maroon and Lucic outscored OV. This was a SERIOUS reason Chiarelli couldn't find scorers in the next year and subsequent 2 years to replace the 50 goal scorers down the left side, essentially an Ovechkin in Edmonton. Remember all those Edm trades which caused everybody to laugh at him, this was the reason why, it wasn't Eberle (50 goals !! not to forget the 42 assists)

And for your sake, I hope he continues to shoot. He's got a good shot, but in Denver he just never seemed confident enough to use it and pretty much always passed or panic shot pucks straight into goalie's crests.

Not a Leafs fan but I had an interesting thought that I feel would benefit the Leafs in the long run. I feel getting Hutchinson (or whoever else becomes Freddy's backup) into games throughout the year (between 20-30 games) to give Freddy some more rest throughout the season could go a long way. Sure it sacrifices playoff positioning, but with this playoff format regular season success has diminished in significance. We've also learned that as long as you make it to the dance anything can happen. With the average(at best) Leafs defense in front of Freddy, his health and performance is really what drives this team. Sure the Leaf's offense can outscore most teams in the regular season, but we haven't seen it work in the playoffs yet.

this loss was a win in my books. the Blues team last night was the Blues team that won the cup plus they have Justin Faulk now. the Leafs today are not the leafs that lost to Boston in the first round and they're not the leafs that we'll see in march/april 2020- the coaching staff haven't even decided who the 4th line is yet. after 4 games there is a lot more to be excited about than to be disappointed about. nylander looks AMAZING. yes he got the beauty goal last night but coming into this game I was most impressed with his 3 drawn penalties in 3 games (willie bob ross?). Auston was an inch away from having 6 goals in 4 games, barrie deserves a barrie jar, 5 leafs are on a point/game pace and 2 of them are defensemen. biggest thing to be disappointed about in my books is Kapanen but luckily for me I don't suffer from memory loss so I'm able to remember the Kappy that was a 20yo beast against Washington in the playoffs 3 years ago and the Kappy who scored 20 goals last season (his first full NHL season). no, its not great that he's gone pointless in the first 4 games and he's a minus-4 and he's made some bone-headed mistakes but its only 4 games, he can turn it around....

I would move Kappy to 3rd line RW and Moore up. Once Hyman is back I'm assuming the 3rd line will look like Mikheyev/Kerfoot/Kapanen. Might just better do it now rather than later. Tavares and Marner don't really use their other winger they just need a guy to win wall battles and stand in front of the net. Kappy is best when he can use his his speed. He doesn't really get the oppertunity when that line is more about having Mitch carry it in.

That was Kapanens best game thus far. He clearly felt bad for the Montreal incident and was giving 110% on the ice last night to make amends. That Pietrangelo goal was not Kappy's fault, one NHL player just had a greater reach to grab that puck, and I think Anderson could have been better also.

Here's the difference between the two losses you are comparing. We lost to Montreal because we were tired, and ran out of gas in the third period (sorry, building a championship team or not ... when the same 15 guys play all three of those games, and the only 3 who are rested are the ones who get the least ice time, it's going to be a problem). We lost to St. Louis because they are a better team than we are. You know how I know that? Because we outplayed them for most of the game, and they still beat us. That's what really good teams do: They find a way to win games, regardless of the run of play. I get the feeling St. Louis was giving about 80% effort there. And they notched it up just enough to win. On the other hand, that was 100% Maple Leafs capacity on display. To win that game, we have to be ahead at the end of the second with a two or three goal lead. I generally agree that Kapanen is not a good fit for Marner and Tavares in terms of getting the same chemistry and style of play. Hyman tends to retrieve the puck deep and then get it back to one his linemates. I have not seen Kapanen do that once yet ... but it's not his style really. Hyman actually does a better job on the forecheck, and Kapanen on the backcheck. And it is wonderful to have a forward who backchecks like Kapanen ... but it changes the offensive chemistry of the line. I have no idea if Moore or Mikheyev is a better Hyman substitute. Yeah, I wouldn't mess with the Matthews or Kerfoot lines. If there is someone from the Line 4 collection of players who deserves a shot on Tavares' line, maybe try that. Yes, Kapanen has had a rough couple of days. But he is still a fantastic player and we do need to see what role he is finally going to settle into on this year's team. Over the past off season, I was adamant that even with all the difficult personnel and cap room decisions this team had to make that we keep Kapanen. And my opinion has not changed: I think he is a player with incredible potential, both as a scorer and competent two-way player. He's a guy who can go up to top line if/when Nylander or Johnsson ever has to miss games. He has speed, can score, and can defend both in even-strength play and as penalty killer. I expect some short handed goals from him (although I think we are going to miss Connor Brown in that respect). I just wonder if you can justify Kapanen's cap hit on the fourth line, which is where he ends up once Hyman is back. As it is, when Hyman returns, we have to say goodbye to 3 forwards in the ~$750k cap hit range. I think this means that realistically Petan, Shore, Spezza, and Timashov are all fighting for one job (I think Gauthier is not going anywhere). And having done the cap math, I think Petan actually *has* to go ... otherwise we are ~$17,000 short of the required cap space (as his $775k salary is the highest of those four). Either Holl or Marincin goes down when Dermott returns (and you actually need a little cap room for this too, because Dermott is more expensive than both of those guys), and you have to have at least one spare defender, so the other is safe. Because this scenario I am describing, where Hyman and Dermott are back, and we have one spare defender and zero spare forwards on the roster is the reality unless you move a higher priced player. So what higher priced player has no clear role once Hyman returns? Kapanen better start having some better games. Let me reiterate: I like the guy, I like his potential. I would like to keep him. But the situation is really not working in his favour. Because over the course of this season, forwards will get injured. And we do not want to be where the Penguins are now ... with a roster so short that we have no one to slot into the lineup at multiple forward positions. It is either a fire sale of several near league minimum players, or one of the bigger money guys has to go. And the latter actually is probably better for the team when it comes to having a roster that can survive injuries.
