2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport TestDriveNow Video Review by Auto Critic Steve Hammes..
Toyota Racing Development, or TRD for short, is Toyota's in-house speed shop if you will, providing performance parts and variants of the brand's trucks, like this 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4X4 Access Cab.

What a poor review. I don't mean the truck is bad, I mean the review is. I watched this, then went and test drove a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport and bought it. I'm nearly 6', and have no trouble with my shin hitting the panel as he complains. I also don't agree that the gears aren't well synchronized, but I use a feather touch to shift, and this guy is clearly trying to force it into gear. It's too bad this truck is getting a bad rap based on a bad driver.

Brutally honest review. But for the typical Toyota truck guys , this is just an additional flavor to choose from.

its funny, the only people bitching about drum brakes are the ones who dont own one. you never hear people who own one complaining about the drum brakes. if they get the job done they are good enough for me, they are also cheaper to maintain

Just a thought from someone who's been watching since the MyRide days--With "Review" buried in the title past where the subscription page cutoff is, I was assuming this video (and the Jeep video) were not full reviews. Take it or leave it; Thanks for the awesome work!

I have a Tacoma SR5 4x4. I understand the initial ding against the Auto trans at first. The auto trans is programmed for economy, However the ECT button changes the whole feel of the trucks power. It is really amazing the difference in feel. I've grown to appreciate both mode and switch when demand is needed. I think if you gave it another try with this in mind, it might change your view.

I have the ECT button on my '01 Tacoma and don't use it often just because the 5-speed in the Prerunner is so quick. Thanks for the feedback.

I understand. I have the 17. I think Toyota jumped through hoops to squeeze every bit of economy they could. I went on a 200 mile trip yesterday and got 26.5 MPG. When I merged onto 95, I turn on the ECT. it's kinda like a nitro boost. I like this type of conversation. different observations and opinions are what broaden our understanding of things.

The only reason why Toyota updated this truck was the GM twins, Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. Toyota would be quite content leaving at the same all these years. Thankfully competition woke up the sleeping giant and forced it to make a semi competitive truck.

So nice to see a manual transmission in a truck again. .....so rare these days. Sadly.

This tester doesn't have all the facts on his review...The TRD Sport also has 17 inch alloy wheels and body colored rear bumpers, a 400 watt converter with 110 power outlet in the bed, turn signals in the outside mirrors, smart key door open/lock and push button start along with the upgraded Entune audio system with standard navigation. All are standard TRD features not found in the lower trim levels.

@Kstxrd 6 жыл бұрын
It makes your description of what makes a TRD Sport more accurate. Many of those features are not available on lower trim levels ( smart key/push button start, 400 watt converter/110 bed outlet ) or only as an extra cost option (premium Entune/navigation) but they are standard equipment on the TRD and part of what makes a TRD Sport a TRD Sport...I don't think these options are minor differences and should be included in any description of the Tacoma TRD.

Push the ECT Power button next time you drive an automatic Tacoma. It really wakes up the transmission.
@123Rosko

Yeah but it also won't upshift when coasting or hitting a speed where you don't need to be so high up in the RPMs. I hate that about my Tacoma. The transmission just needs help all around. It just doesn't want to upshift to accelerate unless you really mash it in, unless you put it in the jerky ECT Pwr mode...

The nose is a little to pointy, it's hair is kinda thinning and the eyes are a bit recessed and bloodshot . The two tone hair color and style remind us all of an era gone bye . The teeth are a little yellow compared to the earlier model . The bags under the eyes and the wrinkles and saggy skin add more proof to its age . Oh yeah , your mom wants her table cloth back when you finally move out of the basement . No Really ,,, thanks for the review . It's good to see other points of view . I've had Toys for over 30 yrs . They rock . The stuff from the big 3 whiners don't even come close .

I absolutely LOVE it when I strike a chord with Mr. Nonobjective Fanboy! Makes me proud...let's me know I've done my job. The truly funny thing is; if you had been around for more than just this 1 video you'd realize that I own Tacomas going back nearly 20 years and have featured them in my vids several times. So go rustle up your 2 subscribers and go back to building paper airplanes at the rehab center. (Keep that pilot fantasy going!)

I am a fan of toyota and your comment on the wet drum brake of the Tacoma sparked my curiosity. I knew that i had heard somewhere wet braking drums are better than disks. After some research I could find no conclusive evidence either way. Maybe Toyota was just being cheap and made that up idk. I did find that today's front disk brakes do the majority of stopping and are more than capable of stopping a vehicle and the rears are just a bonus.

@danielplainview4778
@danielplainview4778 6 жыл бұрын
TestDriveNow Reviews by Auto Critic Steve Hammes agreed. Access cab is just essentially a useless 2 seater, why not get double cab so can at least put someone in the back of you have to?
@thecarelectronicguy687
@thecarelectronicguy687 6 жыл бұрын
The only reason I could see getting this is that the only way to get a manual and a 6' bed, you're forced to get the access cab. The double cab doesn't let you get the manual with the 6' bed.
@emooers
@emooers 6 жыл бұрын
It's not just about the box length - it's also about the overall length. Opting for the double cab with the 6' box makes the wheel base longer, and parking more difficult. I view this as a compromise between a workable truck, and a daily driver.

you're not comparing similar trim levels. The base model Tacoma is $24.5k, Tundra is $30k. Yes, many would say that price difference is worth upgrading to the full-size truck, however many people wouldn't be able to put it to it's full use

Not a perfect truck, the seating position is horrible, but a very enjoyable truck. It's sporty in the sense that it has a 6 speed manual available, and compared to a say a Honda Ridgeline, it has a personality. However, that being said, the Chevrolet Colorado is a great truck. It's only flaw is its manufacture's indifference to customers satisfaction, but reliability has been good. My biggest beef with the Tacoma is that it lacks the Colorado's refinement...which is strange because Toyota was the NHV specialists and leaders. They are still reliable but rough around the edges. If I was to buy a Truck today it would be the Colorado. It fits my 6'3" frame better, and it doesn't beat me up.
@staffoffice
@staffoffice 6 жыл бұрын
Please don't put the Ridgeline as a comparison. The Ridgeline is a Honda Pilot with a small bed ans an Odyssey ride. Ridgeline is laughably a truck. It's a minivan with a bed.

Used to feel the same way about the Colorado, but after putting them through their paces for work (5 LTZ Crew Cabs), I've begun to despise them. You can really see where Chevy cut corners on the engineering of the truck. With barely 30K+ miles on them (mostly used for shuttling car parts), they've developed transmission and suspension issues as well as electrical.
