One of the most successful directors of epic features began as a child besotted with filming toy train wrecks with an 8mm camera. But Steven Spielberg's latest movie, "The Fabelmans," is a semi-autobiographical drama about his parents, and touches on a family secret he had buried for years. He talks with "60 Minutes" correspondent Lesley Stahl about the film's recreations of the happy origins of his career, and the unhappy ending of his parents' marriage.

this movie reminds me of my beginning of learning my passion...photography. I did not enroll in "yearbook" in high school...but began in community college and learned photography and super 8 film production. From there, a good friend from college, hooked me up with his publisher and 1 roll of Tri-x and going to a drag race in the community racepark.....30+ yrs and still going!

Bravo to Steven Spielberg, who is supremely talented and accomplished yet still so down-to-earth and accessible. And while it's difficult to tell what's been edited out, for such a seasoned reporter Lesley Stahl stoops to a surprising low with some of those questions.

I don't think it's a stretch to say it could be argued that if Spielberg didn't initially view the divorce as he did (what exactly his father's role was), then CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND doesn't happen. Or at least, not nearly in the way the movie ultimately exists. It's all right there in the strife if Richard Dreyfus' family

Stevens mother played Steven, her husband, the rest of their kids and respective families like a piano. She too zero responsibility or accountability whatsoever in her affair or affairs, and in telling her husband she wanted a divorce “because she was miserable.” - Then tell it like it is! That’s the real story! You soft peddled the reveal and applied no error, no wrongdoing and ‘no guilt’??? That was the centerpiece of advice from mother to young Steven!!! It makes her pronouncement to young Steven to “have no guilt” or “take no guilt” more than curious. Oh so curious indeed! What was her history? What were her morals? What else did she get up too besides the affair/affairs that she took NO responsibility for?! How did that shape Steven? And what influence and input did Steven’s step-father have? Tragic … So Steven finds out about his mother having an affair when he was 16 years old and keeps it a secret from his father. 3 years later, Steven’s mother reveals to her husband (Steven’s father) that she’s having an affair with and is in love with her husband’s best friend! She, in her own words, “was miserable” and told her husband “she wanted a divorce”. So, he granted her the divorce. Even though he didn’t want to, was deeply in love with her and never stopped loving her. When it was time to make the announcement, Steven’s parents told him and his siblings they were separating and the father took full responsibility saying that he wanted to leave. He protected his wife in the process because of his unbounded love for her and “fell on the sword.” She allowed her husband to lie and take the fall, while she retained custody of the children. The mother never came clean with Steven’s father or Steven. Steven, aged 19, believing his father, blamed his father for the divorce and wouldn’t speak to him for over 15 years. Steven never knew the truth about his father’s cover up until much, much later in life. And Steven kept his mother’s affair he knew at age 16 to himself, never to be shared with his father. What does one do?… The only thing that can be done in this event and any like it is to forgive. To understand may take some doing. Communication, consideration and compassion are key. Only Steven’s father seemed to have a handle on those in large, and he may have suffered the most. How mother Spielberg could go on living the lie and holding court as queen in her own restaurant carrying on guilt free and shameless, must have been something to see. Again, tragic. Truly tragic. As it’s often been said, we’re only as sick as our secrets. So no doubt Mrs. S suffered too. Everyone is effected in those dynamics as illustrated. And everybody hurts. So we can surrender, accept, apologize, forgive and make restitution if possible. God only knows. 🙏😢❤☘️✨Peace and love and tolerance to all.

So, he blamed his father for divorcing his mother, even though he knew she cheated on him? Is it just me, or did it seem like The Fabelmans tried to excuse and rationalize his mothers behavior? “Guilt is a wasted emotion”. Or perhaps it’s an emotion that tells you that you’ve done something wrong. Cheating is wrong and there’s almost never an excuse for it. Cheating on a man, especially one that damn near worshipped you and provided a good life for you, is horrible. Not trying to be hostile here. Simply trying to open a civil discussion because that’s something that really bothered me about the film. The fact that it (to me) felt like Spielberg was trying to excuse and rationalize his mother’s horrible behavior.

His yearning to repeat the refuge of childhood threading his films paralleling the seething underbelly of his anger ( his first wife also had an affair and had the gall to show up in divorce court pregnant with the affair's baby as she sued him for 103 million) that made the rawness of the shark, the private ryans, and the concentration camps surface. Steven Spielberg claimed that although he and Tony Kushner had discussed the idea of the movie for years, it was during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 that he decided to write the screenplay with Kushner from scratch while his schedule was clear. The two of them wrote the script from their homes during lockdown and finished it in 2 months. Steven Spielberg's first screenplay credit since A.I. Artificial Intelligence. The film's development goes back to 1999, when Steven Spielberg considered directing a film about his childhood for some time, with its initial incarnation being titled "I'll Be Home." It would have been directed from a screenplay written by his sister Anne Spielberg (who inspired the character of Reggie Fabelman in this film). In March 2022, cinematographer Janusz Kaminski provided more information on the film's plot. He revealed that the film will chronicle Spielberg's life from age seven to eighteen and deal with "his family, with his parents, conundrums with his sisters, but primarily deals with his passion for movie-making," while adding that it will touch on the themes of "young love, parental divorce, and early formative relationships ... It's a very beautiful, beautiful personal movie. It's very revealing about Steven's life and who he is as a filmmaker." This is the fourth collaboration between Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner, and the first screenplay they've written together. Tony Kushner had previously written Munich, Lincoln, and West Side Story, which were all directed by Steven Spielberg. It was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The film's title is presumed to be the family's surname that the story is based around. First film from Steven Spielberg to be distributed by Universal Pictures since Munich. The work on the screenplay for The Fabelmans began in October 2020 during the lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tony Kushner reflected on the experience, saying, "We wrote three days a week, four hours a day, and we finished the script in two months: by leagues the fastest I've finished anything. It was a blast. I loved it." Spielberg, at that time, felt that the climate caused by the pandemic convinced him that the time was now right to make the film, saying, "I started seriously thinking, if I had to make one movie I haven't made yet, something that I really want to do on a very personally atomic level, what would that be? And there was only one story I really wanted to tell ... My life with my mom and dad taught me a lesson, which I hope this film in a small way imparts ... Which is, when does a young person in a family start to see his parents as human beings? In my case, because of what happened between the ages of 7 and 18, I started to appreciate my mom and dad not as parents but as real people." He gave drafts of the script to his sisters, Sue and Nancy, to ensure that their memories be included in the story and that the details in the film were portrayed as accurately as possible. On the meaning behind the family name "Fabelman", Kushner (who came up with that name) said, "Spielberg means play-mountain; 'spieler' is an actor in Yiddish, and a 'spiel' can be speech or can be a play ... I wanted to have some of that meaning, and I’ve always liked the German word 'fabel,' which means fable. And because the movie is autobiographical for Steven but it isn’t an autobiography, it’s not a documentary, so there’s a fictional element as well. So I thought that ‘Fabelman’ was a nod to that." It was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Film could be such a powerful medium especially when you're as powerful as Spielberg. Being that he could basically do anything he wants, why does he continue to tell tired stories that fail to get anybody to do anything but think too critically. True art really should "disturb the peace" as James Baldwin said, and Spielberg fails miserably every time with very few exceptions. Maybe, just maybe, Schindler's List was ONE exception - but even that one could not resist comforting American sensibilities by repeating myths of American heroism in the Holocaust. One tired trope after another - ENOUGH! BUT, he manages to make himself and hollywood lots of money! I'm sure, like every other American, I'll end up seeing yet another bloated Spielberg production and quickly send it into the area of my brain where all comforting fun entertainment goes - the trash. I guess there's a very small chance that "The Fabelmans" will be different, but I'm guessing not. Thanks for sharing your family story - but I'm guessing it's more or less a story that's already been told - more "1st world problems" melodrama and you're able to do it with an unlimited budget and all the attention in the world.Time to retire already Steven - there are much better filmmakers around now willing to push audiences to actually think.

I understand the love that his family has for each other. We carry things that was think others cant bare. I never told my mother that I was molested many times. As she was a single parent I did not want to make her aware of that. Maybe she did know ? And that is ok. I am at peace with many things and proud of who I am and my mother. Just like I am sure he is.

I grew up on Stephen's movies, long before the internet, long before most homes even had a microwave!.... so blessed to have been a child of the 70's and experience life that would be considered boring to most of today's youth, but they have no idea just how fun to was back then for us!... 💯💯💯

Spielberg is not only the creator of his movies, his mind make more than that being the writer and (mostly) producer of classics like Poltergeist, Young Sherlock Holmes, Gremlins, The Goonies, Super 8, Memoirs of a Geisha, etc. He not only is an amazing director, he put money to another filmakers projects that now are classics or very memorable movies. He is a men who loves Filmaking, and you can see that in all the projects he has he's name in. And let be honest, a lot of the movies we love, have Spielberg like Writer or Producer (or both). I'm a huge fan of Sherlock Holmes and the "Young" movie was one of my favorites, imagine my face years later when i see the "Steven Spielberg" name in the credits, then i undestrand why the style of the movie where so familiar, has the Spielberg soul all over the place! Sorry for my english, i'm from Argentina so is not perfect.

I went on a trip to LA when I was 21, over forty years ago. We ate at the Milky Way and were very impressed and grateful that it was a Kosher restaurant, considering that Mrs. Spielberg wasn't observant. Although admittedly I know nothing about her second husband.

Just finished watching the fabelmans and it’s another masterpiece. I don’t really love Spielbergs movies but I do recognise them as masterpieces either way. He always manages to tell his stories for the broadest audience without ever stepping into something weird or off, it’s always just right. I think the current days we live in suit him even better than before it’s crazy, and at 75… God’s will all along

0:41 and again, how was Ready Player One a “personal” film for him? It’s the most CGI filled of his work, perhaps to me, the least rewatchable. Then again, I didn’t care for the book much

It was such a beautiful movie. I don't know how else to describe it. I felt transported back in time and almost trespassing into someone's personal life and space. An onlooker. I came back to re-watch this interview with his parents. It still pulls my heart when his dad said that he was still in love with her and she just replied that she was so unhappy. The look on his face after she said that. Sometimes you can love someone so much and only receive breadcrumbs in return but it's not your job to make another person happy.

Fortunately, we still have Spielberg to continue watching his movies and regarding The Fabelmans, I really liked it because he wanted to seek portraying his self-biography through this movie. It reminded me of what Scorsese did it when he made The Irishman, wanting to make a personal movie.
