Growing Pains was life changing for me. I have PTSD from....a lot of things, and having the verbiage of "Your body is reacting to minor threats as though your life is in danger" and "How am I supposed to live normally if I always feel like I'm about to die" really helped me to start figuring out a better approach to dealing with PTSD. I know a lot of people hate Steven Universe and even more seem to hate Future, but it's one of the only things I can remember helping me when I was at my lowest. The fact that they made a whole series about dealing with the fallout of adverse childhood experiences and trauma in general that is as accurate as it is has done a lot for a lot of people.

idk why people dislike together forever so much, ik it has a lot of second hand emberassment but thats what the crewniverse was going for, so i would say its very good that they achieved it

A lot of people dislike second hand embarrassment. I understand, I usually can't handle it either. SU is an exception.

Ah, yes. The episode that made me and so many others realize we needed professional help with our own mental health issues. The hospital episode of future really breaks down C-PTSD (complex ptsd, a specific form that afflicts those who experience repeated, constant states of trauma and stress over time) to a level that I could actually understand. After this episode, I realized that my own mental health had stagnated and that I wasn't going to get any better from there on my own. It took a while longer to get into therapy, but this opened my eyes to the need for one. If this helped me at 25, imagine how many kids this helped. Imagine how many traumatized kids and teens came to the same cinclusion and were able to get help. I cry every single time I see this episode for that reason alone.

Even after watching it over and over, only now after learning more about my mental health and watching it now do I get it. First few times I understood how he felt but it flew over my head because I was at a more stable, less self aware time. Now at 21 it’s very relatable and feels good to finally see content where I can see someone feel how I felt when I was younger.

I cant believe there are people who dislike together forever. We get an episode in a show where the kid protag whos been put on an expectation pedestal and goes through some traumatic shit ACTUALLY has to face thst fact and their wellbeing isnt exactly all good after. We never get that and i feel for a kids tv show, showing that what steven went through in reality was Not Great Captain is super important to understanding real relationships and how to process life events. I think its genius.

I said it before, as mysteriously as I could, but now we understand what Future is about. Getting through mental trauma. Hinted before these two episodes, and now on full display. Love these episodes for so many reasons.

The line "How do I live life if it always feels like I'm about to die?" hit me so Hard, because when this episode aired, I was strugling with a really cronic depression and that is exactly how I felt, what sense have to eat, to sleep, what was my porpuse to get up from bed if I was going to die anyway? What was the point? And I been watching Steven Universe since I had 16 yrs, so watching Steven, a such loving and amazing boy so bad and speaking this line and open up about his feelings make me feel so dense because at that moment I hadn't admited my feelings and pretended to be okay. I guess that is when I finally released I needed help and no thing was okay. And I love how they potrait Greg's feelings about not releasing about Steven's. Because that is how my dad reacted when I finally told him I was no longer interesting in being alive. He was so worried because he didn't understand when this happened and how he didn't know. But it wasn't his fault I Just never showed off my true feelings round him.

Steven is so used to helping other people with their traumas that he doesn't know how to ask for help from his friends who could've easily helped him deal with this.
@ThePictureofGregorSamsa
@ThePictureofGregorSamsa 7 ай бұрын
Steven is suffering the consequences of childhood neglect. Steven was raised by gems with no idea how to process their own emotions they’ve been ignoring for centuries and a immature dad, Greg was at least emotionally intelligent. The gems tried their best but were not at all equipped for the emotional needs of a child. Greg is the same story. Greg is kind and a good hearted dad. But that’s not enough for a kid to handle all the trauma and stuff he had to handle.

@ThePictureofGregorSamsa No I meant the gems NOW have a way better understanding on human feelings and can definitely help Steven fight through his traumas, we see this throughout Future, for example, Pearl and Amethyst have matured so much since the original series and would be able to help Steven out if he just opened up to them, Amethyst during season 5 was able to catch on Steven's issues about Rose and approached him without being too forward and try to cheer him up, Peridot was quick to comfort Steven when he had that nightmare a few episodes ago and she's only been on Earth for 4 years or so. My point is, Steven has had many opportunities to open up to his friends (like the cactus episode) but he chose to bottle them up till the point he loses control. I'm not blaming Steven for how he feels, just blaming him for refusing help.

Steven Universe Future is about Steven, after all. He is that golden person who is always there and helps everyone around him on processing their thoughts about whatever is freezing them, but on the main show, only in a few excerpts it showed his mind state. One episode I can think now is Storm in the Room (that episode where he asks the pink room to see his mom and try to take a picture only to realize the camera was unable to photograph it). While being around his friends helps him to keep himself focused, ultimately he needs someone to do for him what he does for the rest, like all human beings.

it's scary but a little funny that one of these traumatic experiences is Ronaldo hitting Steven with a Potato, like looking back Steven was expecting to get kidnapped but wasn't expecting for Ronaldo to just hit him really hard and knocking him out. Still wondered what does the dream scene mean where Steven was throwing up Rose Quartz's hair
@LimeG0ds
@LimeG0ds 7 ай бұрын
The steven throwing up roses hair dream always felt like further reflection of steven feeling like he has to live up to who rose is, and being a "failure" at it, along with straddling this idea of "what if i really am my mom?" Considering he was having more and more dreams mirroring pinks literal memories, And ultimately feeling more and more like he IS actually just the worse version of her? Of course, at this point he really didnt know the depths of the shit his mom did either.

Steven Universe always focused on Steven saving the universe, saving everyone else, or fixing issues. But Future takes place in a time, nobody actually needs that anymore, giving Steven more time to be...introspective. And cause he never really had time to do so prior, that's quite a bit of baggage he has to rummage through and it's stressing him out as he ironically has no clue how to help himself, made even worse that his only forms of support is so busy doing their own thing, they don't really notice that Steven is the one that needs help this time

Steven getting all his ideas of what marriage is from Garnet (shackling it with the idea of being a permafusion) really makes a lot of sense when you consider that a great proportion of the adult humans in Beach City are single parents, and his number one example of "marriage" IS Garnet. M'dude... if you just sang her a song and asked her to date you she would've said yes XD Alas he was too emotionally compromised at this point to think rationally, and just wanted to "disappear" into a fusion just for the rush of joy, much in the same way Pearl desperately wanted to be Sardonyx with Garnet to make up for her insecurities.

I’ve never been in a relationship, but I’d be lying if I said I haven’t craved intimacy in recent years. For reference, I’m 22, and I deal with Crohn’s Disease and daily chronic pain symptoms. Most of my life, I’ve been dependent on family for help with medical issues, and time I wish I’d gotten to spend getting to know someone else, was instead spent recovering from surgeries. I have a bad track record of comparing myself to others cuz of my health, but then the reality of moving into my young adult life kicked in, and seeing how so many friends had either already been in relationships, were currently in them, or the 1 or 2 that are engaged already. It’s rough to go on social media or ANY media really, and see people getting to pursue their dreams not alone. So many people, doctors included, have told me that the right person will come into my life at the right time, but that doesn’t make it any less painful, y’know? I know I can’t just fester in self-pity or isolate myself, those are just ways to guarantee self-destructing or getting sick. But I get Steven’s pain. It just…hurts 😞

12:50 idk if people remember but in that episode where Steven was hanging out with the cool kids and found Peridot's pod, and when the cool kids defended Steven against the Gems, Buck Dewey pointed out that he's just a kid. That right there felt like it was something we understood but overlooked, considering those early seasons were rainbows and sunshine with action mixed into it. To watch Ep 14 in Season Future just hits you harder, for me at least

Many people (including me) thought the first season of SU was very childish. Not only how it was told but also how it was drawn. Well, SU was a cartoon for kids, so it made sense at the time. So all those strange experiences that Steven had were fun to watch. After watching SUF S01E14, you realize how DAMAGED the first season was to Steven's mentality. Every near-death experience or even the traumas he was put through, in SUF became this monstrous outbreak that we saw.

Why is cookie cat a part of Steven’s trauma
@mimthyss
@mimthyss 7 ай бұрын
It isn't really, he starts with that probably because it's easiest to talk about something so small first before continuing to the heavier and heavier memories. And/or because it's chronological, in line with the series - and so it just makes sense to start with the very first episode. To be fair in that ep, he was indeed very upset that they cancelled cookie cat haha. I kind of feel like its a way of representing where all these big issues started in his life; for us, episode one of a show but for him, when he first gains his powers and thus starts to go on missions etc.
