Steve is a life saver when it comes to small engine repair and adjustment! He has helped me out in sooo many ways! His knowledge regarding beer is almost as good! I would like to offer one CAUTION though. DO NOT buy$$ anything from TEESPRING!! There T-Shirts are the worst quality, their silkscreening work is horrendous and their customer service is NON-EXISTENT! They will not respond, nor do they offer phone numbers that will get you through to them!!

Hi Steve! Once again, you are my hero! Earlier, I posted my frustration with not being able to get my freshly tuned up/carb rebuilt Stihl FS 85 weed eater started. -And then, this video popped up. All that was wrong, - I simply needed to adjust my carb. That's it. after a few minutes of fine-tuning, it once again runs like a champ! Yayy!!! Not only can I get some badly needed yard work done, but you saved me about $200 and a lot of time waiting for our local saw shop to get the job done. I spent a whole $18 for the rebuild. That's it. Thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos!!!

If your model has tuning screws with a special head designed to prevent you from tuning them with normal tools, you can buy the special screw driver. Or you can take a dremel with a cutoff wheel and grind a slot into it for a flathead screw driver. My carb isn't quite as pretty now (I had to cut through some extra material around the screws too), but it got me tuned up without having to wait to get the tools! Wonderful video.

Hi Steve, from down under in Australia. I have just watched two of your videos and must say that I was very impressed with your laid back but informative and educational approach. I have just bought a carby kit for my Stihl SH55 blower and planned on fitting it tomorrow. The problem being that it starts but wont rev, but after watching one of your videos, I am going to remove the spark arrestor first to see if that makes any difference. But don't worry as I realise the safety issue of not having one, so will purchase a new one if this turns out to be the problem. I currently have three pieces of Stihl equipment and overall have been pretty happy with all of their products. I have saved you in my bookmarks so that I can easily access your help videos in the future should I need any help. I'm glad you were enjoying a Carona in one of the videos as I enjoy the beer, but am currently sipping on a Hahn Super Dry.

If after using this tutorial you're still having trouble with engine RPMs and/or stalling, please check if your trimmer carburetor has a clutch adjustment screw. My trimmer is an old Stihl FS36. Besides the high and low speed screws it has a clutch adjustment screw located below the two screws. It's slightly bigger then the others. If you unscrew it way out then on low RPMs the head will spin very fast. You need to screw it in enough so that the head stops spinning but the engine doesn't stall. If you screw the clutch screw too far in while the engine idles, the trimmer will turn off. I suggest to unscrew it half a turn, start up the trimmer, let it idle then very slowly turn the clutch screw in untill the engine stops. Make note of this position, unscrew it one quarter and now the engine should idle perfectly, and the head should not spin. If it does, you need to fiddle with this screw a little more. Eventually, you will get it. Naturally, the location and type of clutch screw may vary per model. Please see the manufacturers manual for reference. Also, I found that when adjusting the low speed screw a certain amount of turns, it is best to do the same amount of turns with the clutch screw, with the reference point being the lightly seated position as Steve describes it. The manual advised this but does not specify the amount, so sticking to a 1:1 ratio is a good starting point. Other than that, thanks for the video Steve!

These videos are awesome. I have a Stihl KM 55R that I've owned for about 8 years and it suddenly quit starting this summer. I watched your tune-up video and for $16 I replaced the carb, spark plug, air filter, fuel filter and fuel line and got it running yesterday. Ran great but died when I let off the trigger, no idle. I'm confident that when I adjust the carburetor per your instructions that it will be running like new. You saved me $200! CHEERS Steve!

Steve made this SO SIMPLE. It worked great for a Troy Bilt string trimmer that was given to me because it didn't run right. The only obstacle for me was finding a way to turn the adjustment screws. After the adjustment, the unit starts easily, idles well, and has plenty of power at high speed. Thank you Steve. Your videos have taught this DIY'er a lot.

You had me at "this job will take about half a beer". The process worked well for me. I couldn't get the plastic protectors off, actually cracked one trying, so I left them on and accessed the screw through the hole in the protector. They must have changed something on my model. My Stihl is now running like a champ.

I adjusted my weed eater your way a year or so ago and it's been running great. I didn't think much about it until recently when my brother in law used it at my parents house. After doing about a fifty yard by 10-15 foot wide swath along the side of the driveway, (he looked like he was swinging a scythe, making it look so easy) he came over to where I was working and asked "What in the world did you do to that weed eater? It's a HOSS!". It's really not a Hoss, it just thinks it is. It's a 25cc trash picked Murray engine that I put a cheap new carb on, replaced the boom with a Troybilt attachment type, put on a Shakespeare Max Load PRO Bump Head (the most expensive part in the whole set up) with .080 Ugly Line. It's a sweet combination but your carb tuning method made a HUGE difference. Thanks!
