I’ve found it better to ask the person to double the value of their card and double it again. I tell them I’m going to pass cards from the top of the deck to my other hand (keeping the same order) and then ask them to stop me at one number before their number. And then you do the theatrical reveal. Blows them away far better. No numbers are revealed at all, no risk of them seeing a pattern of cards as you would have dealt them.

I'm going to count the cards face down. Face up u can see every 4th card counting up. Not sure why, but my mind locked on diamonds when he was counting the cards. Every 4th card they were going up 4 5 6 7 etc... all the suits do it. Is it face up so the trick is set again? Then u can flip the deck face down and do it again I guess?

If you can reliably do a proper manipulated cut with the cards face down that would at least fool untrained eyes.

Thanks for explaining. I have no background in magic, but I love analyzing things and I see why this works now. It's all based on the way you assembled the deck. So when you "index" it (I dont know the right word) and put the king on the bottom, you know counting up from the bottom that every 4th card will be that suit in descending order (K, Q, J, 10, etc). So then having them "double, then double again" may seem random, but what that is doing is ensuring every 4th card you flip over is the suit they selected at the start. (2 x 2 = 4, which is how many suits there are). Since it's set up, then when they pick a number, you just down down the deck that many (times 4 for 4 suits) until you get to their card. Brilliant trick. Can't wait to try it with my kids.

You can use the Magician’s Choice to manipulate the spectator to choose the suit you are set up for, in this case clubs. Maybe by using the four aces from another deck.

What would be amazing is to have 4 identical decks . Each deck is ready to go , so what ever suit they choose you pull out the deck you want . Back left jeans pocket will be club , back right pocket spades , side right pocket hearts , side left pocket diamond . 😉

I use a stacked Tapered Deck with the 4 kings reversed. That way I can cut to the correct king just before the count under the pretext of saying that counting from the middle of a cut deck will make it even more impressive if we can locate the card. That way I don't need 4 decks, and I don't need to look at the deck to cut and reposition the correct king to the bottom of the deck.

Wow!🤯 This is awesome idea. At the beggining, you can force the same suit to both spectators and that is the answer behind why it has to be the same suit and you end up with 2 possibilities. Possibility 1: finding both thought of a card and thought of a number in the same deck which is insane. Possibility 2: If both spectators thought the same value they will end up with the same card and the same number which you can play it like that is the trick and for them its going to be impossible how could they thought the same value.

One spec and make it sound a last minute idea to double again, never do it gain to the same specs in the same session, preferably not at all, use different specs or people will realise there is a "Stack" involved

What's missing from this explanation is because its a cyclical stack you can cut the deck as any times as you like and the order is preserved when pulling the king to the bottom. I would definitely get the spectator to cut a few times before beginning. You could even get them to cut after they have named the suit, to make sure the pack is random.

Very cool indeed! Couple of pointers: 1. You don’t have to change the cards! You know the position of every card as it is. You just add 13, 26 or 39 if the suit is the first one (diamonds in your example), the second (spades) or the third one (hearts). So without changing the deck, 5 of diamonds would be in position number 33 (5x2x2+13). If the position number is bigger than 52 you just circle the deck! 10 of spades would be in position 66 (10x2x2+26), meaning 66-52=14th from the top. Knowing all card positions opens up limitless possibilities for revealing. 2. I think is better to let the spectator count in order to find their own card without even telling you the multiplication result. This would leave them even more speechless!

I have just tried your idea, and it works great thank you, I wasn't too happy with moving the king to the bottom of the pack, as it takes away some of the magic appeal of the trick, but doing it this way illuminates that issue 👍 But to keep the trick simpler especially with children, ask the the person to choose a card between 1-10, that eliminates any confusion about what a Jack, Queen or King is worth ! One thing I've done with this trick is to have the deck in my hands and be casually cutting it while asking them to pick a suit. That way you don't have to explain what you're doing when you pick the deck up and go hunting for the king. Just keep handling the deck casually, find the king, and then set it back on the table. I also don't tell them to double it to make it random, because that's not random… I tell them double digit numbers are harder to guess and I want to make it more complicated. :)

You could even avoid the cut by having four decks in four different pockets (or two decks in two pockets) and just start by saying "I have a deck in my pocket", the proceed to pull out the appropriately set up deck.

Something powerful that you didn’t mention is that the spectator can actually cut the deck as many times as they want before you do the trick. A cut and complete retains the order of the cards so it doesn’t matter how many times they cut it

Great trick, thanks for this. Here's a another way of presenting it. Tell them it's the "Mind reader" trick. 1. Ask the suite to spectator. (Assume they say Clubs) 2. Say "I already found the card you are 'going to think of' with a single cut to the pack" and move the king to its place. Now hand over the pack to the spectator. And ask them to think of a card from that suite > double its value > double the value again. They keep it in mind and don't say it aloud. Now ask them to see the card which is in the same position as the value from 2nd double in their mind. It turns out to be the one they thought! In this method, you don't ask the final number as one can divide it by 4 and get the card value.

Great trick, well explained! I have realized, and as noted in previous comments, that this is a clever version of the Sy Stebbins stack. I set up the deck as follows; set the four card piles into CHaSeD order (10C, 7H, 4S and AD face up on face up piles) build the deck starting in succession with the 10C. The KD is now on the face of the deck. If fairly low numbered cards are "thought of" then, after asking for the suit, if Clubs is chosen, add 13 to the twice-doubled number the spec gave. If Hearts is chosen, add 26 to the twice-doubled number the spec gave. If Spades is chosen, add 39 to the twice-doubled number the spec gave. This avoids having to sort through the deck. This works best for card values if the thought-of cards are any value for Clubs and Hearts, or Ace, two or three for Spades, as the card would be found with only one count-through of the deck. Otherwise, the counting becomes too laboreous for the audience. Alternatively, I use the two Jokers and an advertisement card before the Kings of C, H and S and make an excuse to pull these from the deck, leaving the required K of the chosen suit on the bottom after removing the three extra cards. To start, I pull the deck from the box with the deck cut to leave the KH on the bottom. According to my sources, the most selected suit seems to be Hearts, especially with women (no misogyny intended). Men most often choose the black suits. Whew!

Another great Si Stebbins trick. I do this as a memorization trick, After you get the selected King to the bottom, I spread the cards and say I will memorize the deck. Gather up the deck and ask spec for a value card from the selected suit. Multiply the value times 4. Deal out that number of cards and turn the last card dealt over and show spec card selected. This removes the possibility that the cards are in an order where that number agrees to the card selected.

I learned this effect, and quickly added it to my repertoire. I get lots of amazed reactions that are in the incredible range. If you learned this effect, I have a much BETTER story line to go by. I am a creative guy like this, and I came up with the idea "on the fly".....you are welcome. Here is the premise. Do your favorite false shuffle convincingly, Get the suit...put that on the bottom. Now you are ready for the "line you will feed the spectators"..... Tell them you are memorizing every card, at every position. (thumb through the cards face-up as if you are really doing this.) Turn the deck facedown, ask for the number (from the spectator), match it to the suit verbally. Then "claim" since you know the position of the card they just named because you thumbed through the cards looked at them once. Whatever the card actually is....do the math in YOUR head and then say out loud, the (whatever the selection is) selection. "Since I have an incredible memory ability and I memorized each card at each position in the deck, in the exact order, YOUR five of hearts is the 20th card in the deck from the top." Show the deck facedown and quickly count down to the selection. Flip it over and show their chosen card. Flip it back over and put the deck in the original order. NOW YOU ARE RESET. Quickly do it all over again. Do this three times and people will think you are a card shark. You are welcome. False shuffle, get the suit, get the number, count the cards down and flip over the card. You will look like a genius. You are welcome.....

I think a more “mystical” way to relocate the King would be to have them think of the suit, have them tell you. Then say to pick, in their mind, the car from that suit. Then explain you’re going to read their mind, and relocate that card to the bottom. Then when they get their random number. You can explain that by some magic (use a snap for effect or a tap of the deck) you’ve relocated their card to their number spot in the deck.

Ok I got a couple ideas. For the suit you can have them roll a dice which has C,H,S,D. That way when they roll it's a random selection, but you'll see what suit they land on. Then... you can say "now before we do anything else I'm just gonna take out the jokers". Literally keep some jokers next to some kings, so that you can cut a Joker to the bottom, then keep looking for the next joker (secretly cutting the king to the bottom.)

It is possible to use a "stripper" as a cut. Or it is good to make a fan on the table by one movement. The viewer checks that the cards are not sorted. After information about the color with both hands, we put the cards into the desired formation - this is probably the best way. I recommend fake mixing before the act. :)

Or, rip a small blank piece of paper into four pieces, write a suit on each, crumple up the pieces, shake them up and toss them to the table telling them that you are going to have them pick a suit at random. Then open up the paper they choose and say, "All right, you could have chosen any one of the four suits, but you have randomly chosen _________." This seems very fair and avoids having to ask them to tell us the suit they are thinking of.

I tried a little tweak and would like to know what you think . So when picking the suit instead of cutting to the suit, I put down four piles each pile with the king on the bottom and set them in Chase order. Then when they pick the card, I restocked the deck with that pile on the bottom.

This is not Bergals-effect. But you can "influence" the viewer in advance to choose the right color. Then it is a bergals-effect who does not require the search for the "king".

Well, does it really matter? I have searched through numerous lecture notes & videos but never ones have I found the 'perfect' Berglas Effect... Seems to me like a myth/ legend... This handling is no less impactful than what Berglas did... and as a plus this one is w/o the 'stooge' controversy.

@@MagicScapes I agree, but you wrote that it is a pure Bergals-effect, which really is not. :) To execute "Berglas" must be a magician psychologist and must be able to work with determinism thinking of the audience. This means, for example, that I take a tie with a specific card motif, take clothes of a particular color and put an empty box on the table with a specific card motif. It is good to know the customs of the audience, for example, American women prefer "diamonds", while the European "heart". The percentage of success is very high. For possible failure I have a plan "B", ie I continue with a completely different trick and with a different result. I have done many clean Berglas tricks. A common trick is sometimes more pleasant, for example, the "king" of the same color at the bottom of the package, but it really is not Berglas, but a happy coincidence that I also like. :) A specific trick from the video is the basic principle for children and of course the magicians will not be "fried". There are some good variations to this fantastic trick mentioned in the comments section. However, I think my version has greater impact, saves a lot of time and effort (no extra packs in each pocket, extra stacking, no rifling through the deck, etc.) and at NO TIME throughout the whole trick does the magician look at ANY of the cards - this makes the effect even more astounding! Not ever looking at any of the cards at all has terrific impact. Essentially this trick should, like many tricks, only be showed once at any one sitting. This simplifies the process. So there is only a need for the magician to know what suit - say Clubs - is going to be selected by the audience. I do this trick already knowing it will be, say, clubs (later I can use another suit if needed if I repeat the trick). This requires a 'force' to have the audience just believe that the suit Clubs (or whatever suit) has been freely been selected. This is my method: Get a 'stripper deck' and pre-load 4 Clubs (any club will do). Tell the audience (if two or more people), that one of the audience will freely select the suit of the card being selected and the other will freely select a card number randomly from his mind. This removes the selection entirely away from the magician but importantly makes the effect seem almost impossible to achieve. If only one audience member he does both steps. Cut the stripper deck a number of times for reassurance purposes that the cards are mixed and then place the deck behind your back - remember, remind the audience that the magician will never see any of the cards in this during the whole process. Remove the 4 different clubs and keep them face down and place them on the table - the natural audience assumption is there are four suits. Remind the audience that NOBODY knows what suits the 4 cards are (saying that reinforces and implies there are different suits when all are clubs). Have the audience member select just one card of the four by placing his finger on the card and keep it there face down unseen by anyone at all. The other cards are returned to the stripper deck and the stripper deck is no longer required. For effect, I ask the person that picked the card under his finger to remember that he had free choice to pick the card he wanted and it could have been a Heart, Spade, Diamond or Club - nobody yet knows not even the magician! Again, being able to pick a single card from the 4 face down cards gives the impression that there is more than one suit in front of them when they are all just clubs. Keep in mind that because NOBODY is seeing any card it will be assumed that there is no funny business going on. Ask the other audience member to think of a card - for simplicity, I just say 'pick a number between 1 and 10 but remember, your friend over here has already picked a card to select the suit' (soon to be revealed). We just need a card number only from you. So now we have 2 random selections from 2 different people and NOBODY seeing any card at this point is MIND BOGGLING! The next step is very important. THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE AUDIENCE MEMBER TO DO ANY MATHS AT ALL!!! DO NOT GET THEM TO DOUBLE THE NUMBER AND DOUBLE AGAIN! If you ask them to double their number and double again (as instructed in the video), you have removed the magical effect and turned the whole trick into a maths exercise. Far better for you the magician to do the math in your head as the cards are counted down off the deck and it becomes a whole different experience - I count down in my head (not aloud) and I take one card off the deck slowly one at a time (this prevents mishaps). How on earth can anyone know where the card is when nobody, including the magician, hasn't seen any card during the whole process. DO NOT turn the cards over showing their face when taking the cards off the deck - keep all of them completely hidden from view face down until the actual card thought of is found and revealed. Remember that, by not turning over the cards in deck during the count means that you had NO visual clues at any point - you have seen NOTHING! Then blow them away and ask the other audience member to show the card they have had their finger on - IT MAGICALLY MATCHES SUIT !! That is my technique and it is stupefying - how is this possible??? Try it you will get a huge response. Enjoy.....

@@Mantras-and-Mystics It super simple and works by elimination (and ambiguity of the consequences of the spectator's choice). Example: Let's say you want to 'force' diamonds. You give the spectator a choice..."red or black?" If they say "red", you say "great, let's go with red". If they say "black", you say "great, let's get rid of black". Either choice results in red being kept. Then, you do the same with hearts and diamonds. If they say "diamonds", you say "great, let's go with diamons". If they say "hearts", you say "great, let's get rid of hearts".

Great ACAAN! With another setup you can also get it working by setting up cards so that you decide to count from either top or bottom and if you count on the card or the next one. Though the cards pattern is too obvious and in this variations it looks genuinely random shuffled! Kudos

Hello there, I'm still trying to figure out why this trick works, from a logical perspective. So there is a cycle in the deck that goes from 3 to 3, like a Si Stebbins stack, and I understand that because there is 13 cards in a suit, and the number of total card in a deck is 52, so if you arrange your cards 4 by 4 for one suit, you just have to multiply by 4 to get to the position of the card in the deck, but I don't understand how, if you place a king on the bottom, it resets all the order but for another suit. If anyone has an explanation, I would be very glad to hear it! It's a gorgeous trick btw, I really love it!

The chosen suit is every fourth card, A to K. So, K on the face. If he chooses A, the maths gets him to 4 and that's where the A is. 2 is at 8. 3 is at 12...

The only thing is, you even don't have to show the card as you can just "guess" it, if you ask them to tell you what is the final result (after they multiply twice), you can just divide by 4 and you got the answer.. it's like asking them what is the card you've chosen. the visual of it will just "prove" that you actually found their card in the pack with a random number :)

Using the deck is a cool idea. It is just math if you didn't set the deck up you could just have them think of the card doing the same additions and come up with the card. Counting the deck effectively distracts them from the solution. Very cool

Once they tell you the number, if you divide the number by four, you know the value (and suit) of their chosen card. The real trick is the positioning of their card in the deck.

Saying what everyone knows but when you set up the deck you see that the suits are order sequenced throughout the deck, e.g Spade, Diamond, Clubs, Hearts repeat. Also make sure the participant knows the Ace is low (i.e.1). Great trick
