Eric Clapton performed with SRV in his last concert. Here's what he had to say about it. "The worst thing for me was that Stevie Ray had been sober for three years and was at his peak. When he played that night, he had all of us standing mere with our jaws dropped. I mean, Robert Cray and Jimmie Vaughan and Buddy Guy were just watching in awe. There was no one better than him on this planet. Really unbelievable."

Back in the early '80s, I was creating a glass art project in a bar on 6th street. A fellow walked in and asked to speak to the manager so we pointed towards the backroom. The manager came out and the fellow asked if he could come in with his troop and jam on a weekend night. The manager asked him what he played and the fellow asked if he could show him. After a twenty/thirty minute set up, the fellow opened up with 'look at little sister' followed by voodoo child and my jaw dropped open. The fellow introduced himself as Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble. The manager wanted him to start that very night and after that, it was standing room only...all the way outside of the bar. This was before he cut his first album, and I had the honor of being able to hear what he could do before he proved it to the world.

@@cahillgreg I respectfully disagree, in my opinion Stevie's vocals here is giving a certain vibe to the song, unique and different. I even enjoy the inaudible and arguably mistaken* parts, I think this is actually what lies in the core of live music.

@@cahillgreg Absolutely have to respectfully disagree also. I saw him multiple times, the first being in 1984, it was a jaw dropping performance. In addition to pouring the energy out through that guitar like he did, the vocals conveyed that energy also. Almost 40 years later, his live performances, energy delivery and stage presence remain a very high bar to reach for. In my very humble opinion, his voice was a compliment to how he played. As enjoyable as these video clips are, they simply can not do justice to the raw energy pouring out of that man on stage during a performance like this.

Hendrix may have changed the way people played, but other guys took it up another stage. But Hendrix, Clapton etc likewise copied Albert & BB King, its a simple progression in life. Personally I think this SRV is far superior to JH also Gary Moore another fabulous player. I've never liked watching the showmanship that JH did, it's irritating. It's all a matter of taste I can't stand Jeff Beck and Rory Gallagher, Page is OK but doesn't set me on fire or Hallen Vai and Satriani. Again just a matter of opinion. Jack, Gary Moore's son is a great player, love Clapton , Walter Trout. So many different guys out there to suit different tastes.

@@chrisking6695 you’re such an idiot. SRV was a genius blues player that DID write so much of his own music. And do you really think that people who praise SRV don’t like Hendrix and only do it because he’s white? You are a moron. Every musician is inspired from someone else in some way. If you played me an SRV song, I would instantly recognize it because SRV didn’t copy anybody, he took different things from other players and made it his own, like any musician does. You don’t need to reinvent anything to be an excellent player, you can be just really really good at what you do. Hendrix said he wasn’t the best player and yet everybody considers him as the greatest of all time.

There are so many great guitarists in the world, but I wonder, in my lifetime, if I will ever experience anyone as soulful, nasty, tasty, precise, articulate, and intricate as Stevie. What a fucking gift to the music listening public. In his after-life, I hope Stevie is rocking the house down, forcing the angels to cover their ears to what us mortals were able to enjoy for brief but spectacular time here on earth. Mighty God rest his soul.

One of the things that I believe sets Stevie apart and makes him the greatest guitar player (in my opinion) is that you’re not hearing just guitar, it’s literally heart and soul of Stevie expressed through his guitar playing. Other people can play the guitar, but Stevie’s soul sang through it. I don’t think he ever played a dull note. If he did it was intentional and it still sounded good. Also the fact he barely looks at big guitar while he shreds.. incredible.

When you can shred better than 95% of pros while literally playing behind your back, you don't need to look at the guitar.
