Just want to add, his band, Double Trouble, was one of the best Rhythm sections. Stevie never played the songs the same way or even the same tempo. It would change from night 2 night. He makes some parts longer in some parts shorter and the guys would figure it out as they went along. They were so in sync. The bass player was one of the Great Blues players. He played with Johnny Winters and the number of Blues greats. Tommy Shannon

If playing behind your back were easy, we would all be doing it. He played it behind his head as well. And the band is epic...the bass lines and drum fills are every bit as much a part of the sound as the greatest guitar player of all time. Hendrix gets points for creativity, but for pure mastery of the instrument in a single genre, there is none greater.

Not only was he playing in a very difficult position to play, the wrist control and the feel of the fret board is incredible, but apart from that, the pulls and bends that he was doing were especially impressive considering he used the heaviest guitar strings available. "The band's alright"... well I guess everyone does have their own opinion of course; as for mine, I think he couldn't have hoped for a better drummer. Chris Layton is a tremendously underrated drummer (more of SRV and Double Trouble will let you get a better understanding of how good Layton is and how quick he is to notice any changes as well as how good his timing amongst other things, especially considering he is drumming for someone like Stevie). As for Tommy Shannon, he is a pretty damn good bass player (originally having been with Johnny Winter). I personally haven't payed as much attention to Tommy and because of such can't say if he is the perfect fit for the band or not, but with the amount of Stevie I have watched and listened to, I never heard any problems with his bass playing. As Mario Levasseur here in the comments said, Stevie never played the same way twice, so for Tommy and Chris (and later Reese) to keep up is testament to their skill.

Stevie is normally a fiery Texas blues player. Many say he is the best ever. He has earned that title, but on this song everything he does was already done by Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix also played with his teeth. I've never seen Stevie do that, but I suppose that would be difficult while holding tobacco in your mouth. The major difference between the two is their styles. Hendrix did hard blues and a lot of what they called 'psychedelic' music. With the exception of this song, Stevie stuck with his Texas-style on most of his output. He does things like 'Voodoo Child' as an homage to Hendrix. I've been to Stevie's concerts even before he became an overnight sensation. The one thing he never did was lose his cool no matter what happened. In this video you saw where he broke a string, maybe two, and he just keeps right on going. THAT is a man who has mastered his instrument because breaking a string can completely upset your intentions. Stevie just adapts. During a concert I was at, not only did this happen, but his keyboard started humming, his one guitar literally died, and a speaker shorted out. He just kept on going without missing a beat. He had a great backup band. Also of note, the old man is right - playing behind your back is the same as playing in front if you know your guitar so well that you can play blindfolded. I've been playing for over 30 years and can play perfectly in the pitch black (although no where as well as Stevie). If you know where the notes are, you'll find them.

Thank you for the Stevie Rave On review! 😉🎸🐐 Stevie came onto the scene in 1983 when hairbands, parachute pants, and synthesizers ruled the airwaves. No one was doing Blues/Rock and he took everyone by storm. In fact, everyone wanted him to play on their records. Ex: David Bowie's 'Let's Dance'. Yup, that's Stevie on guitar. His main influences were Albert King and Jimi Hendrix, although he did have many 'guitar heroes'. He got sober from drugs and alcohol in late '86 and was clean until his death on August 27th, 1990, when he was killed in a helicopter crash following a concert with his brother Jimmie Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray. He is regarded as one of the best guitarists of all time. Of course, that's all subjective to whoever is ranking them. Don't ask me who's best because I'm biased. 🤣 To see him do more 'tricks', check out Voodoo Child live at the Cotton Club in Finland. (He shakes a dude's hand while he's playing) Check out Life Without You live at the Capitol Theater. (He plays with his teeth) You should also check out 'Texas Flood' live at El Macambo. One of the best guitar performances. Ever. PS - 'Tight Rope' and 'Leave My Girl Alone' live at Austin City Limits in 1989.

Playing behind your back is not a gimmick. Like others have said. If it was easy, you’d see everybody doing it. The biggest reason is that your wrists are rotated from your natural playing position. So to play at that level with a wholly different hand position is...well hard af! Haha. He also does this in a tux with a coat tail. He has to keep the guitar far enough away from his body so it doesn’t interfere with the strings.

Semi-Pro wannabe here... Dad, you are wrong. Although the chord "Positioning" is the same, doing this is not "the same" as playing in front. Most people realize your picking hand needs clearance behind the back, but the fretting hand is actually the most affected. keeping the guitar body tilted and away from your body obviously also tilts the neck. you can't just detach your wrist and wrap your hand around the guitar neck to put it in your usual chording position. Your entire positioning is thrown off along with the usual leverage which affects your strength, speed, reach, dexterity and articulation. You lose a lot of your leverage on that hand, and if you've learned ANYTHING about SRV and his set-up, you'll know that he played ridiculously heavy strings set unusually high from the neck. It took a gritty guitarist to play his set-up in the normal position... It would take a MONSTER to play it behind the back. Fill a 5 gallon pail with water and hold it to your chest. It's heavy, right?... Now extend your arms and hold that same full bucket at at arms-length in front of you. Enjoy the torn muscles!. See the difference positioning and leverage make? You said this was a trick for "People that don't know how to play guitar" when in reality, everyone who'd PLAYED one knows how impressive this was.

Playing behind your back is not the same as in the front. You want to play the right notes in both situations, but it's harder behind your back. The coordination is trickier and you can't look down and see exactly where your finger are on the fret board at any given moment. Think about how hard it would be to play other instruments behind your back (like a violin or the drums or something like that). Some instruments would be harder than others, you'd have to practice a lot to get the same result as you would doing it the normal way.

Playing behind the back isn't harder technically, but it takes a lot of strength to hold the guitar up off the back of your shirt and play at the same time. On Monday, August 27, 1990, at 12:50 a.m. (CDT), Vaughan and members of Eric Clapton's touring entourage played an all-star encore jam session at Alpine Valley Music Theatre in Alpine Valley Resort in East Troy, Wisconsin. They then left for Midway International Airport in Chicago in a Bell 206B helicopter, the most common way for acts to enter and exit the venue, as there is only one road in and out, heavily used by fans. The helicopter crashed into a nearby ski hill shortly after takeoff. Vaughan and the four others on board-pilot Jeff Brown, agent Bobby Brooks, bodyguard Nigel Browne, and tour manager Colin Smythe-were all killed. The helicopter was identified as being owned by Chicago-based company Omniflight Helicopters. Initial reports[by whom?] of the crash inaccurately claimed that Clapton had also been killed in the accident.

When, y'all both decided to stop fighting about it but then started back arguing again it made me audibly laugh 😅 I almost spit my drink out. As a guitarist myself, I understand what F is saying, the way you hold your fingers position does not change reguardless of of if you are playing the guitar normally, behind your back, over the shoulder of whatever. Your muscle memory still works the exact same. HOWEVER, as S said only extremely skilled guitarist can pull off tricks like this. Because the act of holding a guitar in a strange way with your body can easily throw off the way your brain is processing playing. Until, your skill surpasses the novelty of changing the way the guitar is held. Plus picking is a little different because you have to hold your hand so that your body doesn't mute the strings. I've never been able to do it, I just have very talented friends that I've had the good fortune to have had explain these things to me. So, My answer... Is you're both right. You may continue arguing ☺

Behind the back is an order of magnitude harder to play than the orthodox way. Your fretting hand's wrist (left hand) will have trouble with its flexibility to reach your fingers across the fret board for some lower register chords, especially playing as fast as he was. On the other side (right hand), not only does he have to keep the rhythm with his strumming and soloing, he has to hold the guitar away from his back so his strings aren't muted against his pants/shirt/body. That restricts his strumming hand's movement capabilities. I have yet to see ANYONE do it as well and as effortlessly as SRV.

I used to play a lot of S.R.V. stuff, including behind the back, it is much more difficult because your left arm doesn't want to move right and you have to be able to play it from muscle memory, without looking, in order to play it well. It's very difficult. It's not a huge difficulty leap from playing it in front of you, but the difficulty definitely goes up. Also, it takes a lot of hand strength to get it behind your back because you are only holding it by the neck, with your off hand, while you are trying to reattach your strap. You also have to hold the guitar off of your back. The real shocker is that he plays better behind the back than most people play in front of them. Also, he never played a song the same way twice. If you watch a different video of the same song, then you will notice the difference. Okay, I'm going to quit rambling. I just love S.R.V. so much. He died in the late 80's early 90's (in his 30's).

SRV Was a guitar monster! Nobody else that ever picked up a guitar could play a Jimi Hendrix song (voodoo child) behind his back, and I mean nobody. He also used gorilla strings .013 gauge to .060 also tuned to eb also. Did you notice that he can bend them like they were plastic? He also broke them all the time, Eric Clapton will tell you flat out SRV was the man.....RIP GOAT

SRV died in a helicopter crash in 1990 I believe right after he straightened out his life from his addiction problems. R.I.P. Everyone when watching SRV is fixated on him alone unfortunately for his tight band, Double Trouble. No need to explain. Another rabbit hole to consider is Led Zeppelin. Start with "Since I've Been Loving You".

Double Trouble ( Triple Threat with the addition of Reese on Keyboard) was top notch!

He died in a helicopter crash. Eric Clapton was supposed to be with him, but cancelled at the last minute. I still remember when they announced his death, I pulled over on the shoulder and cried!

Sorry guys, don’t think that I don’t like Eddie van Halen and Alex Lifeson and other cool, stately guitarists. BUT wait a minute ... Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of two - three the best guitarists in history. At all. In the past, present, future. And he will remain in his place forever and ever. My choices are Hendrix, Stevie Ray, Clapton. These guys are all number one. And not one of them is better than the other.

At a certain level there is no best. There is only best at what they do, best for the mood you are in, best for what you love. That being said, Stevie Ray is the best I have ever seen, and I have seen some great guitarist.

He idolized Jimi Hendrix and reached the same level of musicianship. When you get this good it ain't about whose 'best', it's strictly preference. He learned a lot from Jimi Hendrix would tap out melodies on the fret board while accompanying himself with rhythm strokes at the Pick ups.

SRV was and still is the best blue guitarist of all time . And no most guitar players can't play behind their back as good as they can with it in the front . The same with Jimi Hendrix.

Try out Texsd Flood Nd Cuoubnt Stand the Wearher. He burns both up. SRV was born in Dallas Texas, and died in a helicopter crash in 1991. He is the greatest.

SRV definitely top 5.. All the great guitarists are old or have passed. Kids are to distracted by video games these days.

To say that playing the guitar forward is the same as playing it behind your back is insane. If it was that easy, everyone would do it. Name me another guitar player who did this?
