"Lenny (Live at the El Mocambo)" by Stevie Ray Vaughan
Stevie Ray Vaughan was a legendary blues guitarist and singer from Texas, known for his soulful playing and powerful vocals. He rose to fame in the 1980s with hits like "Pride and Joy", "Texas Flood", and "The Sky is Crying", which showcased his incredible guitar skills and deep love for the blues. Vaughan collaborated with many other artists throughout his career, including David Bowie (on the song "Let's Dance"), blues icon B.B. King (on the album "In Session") and his brother Jimmie Vaughan (on their “family Style” album). He was also heavily influenced by other blues legends like Albert King, Freddie King, and Jimi Hendrix, whose playing styles he incorporated into his own unique sound.

This comment gets my and (more importantly) my strat's approval. Ain't married yet but that ol' girl is definitely my better half lol. Gotta change the the tubes inv my amp tho (AC30, love it), at least one of em is dieing on me(probably a power tube). It's very temperamental, if I turn it up too loud or push too much signal through it (i.e. pedals) the volume will start to fluctuate randomly. I used to play it so loud the floor would shake and I'd have to stand out 10-15ft from it(one time when my dad picked me up from my dorm he said he could hear me playing from the ground, I was on the 6th floor lol [I remember that day well, I was playing along to the Rolling Stones "gimme shelter" and had the amp cranked way up] , that was when I planned on being a musician for a living (3 or 4 years ago). Now I'm double majoring in Biology and computer science, both of which I love. Life is a strange ride

I read about how his wife scrapped up $350 to buy him this guitar from a pawn shop because he couldn’t afford it. He stayed up all night and composed ‘Lenny’ as a sign of gratitude. @@freeestyleobsessed I learned to play Lenny just by sitting down in my free time and practicing. Given, it took a lot of my free time and my playing is not now nor ever going to be comparable to Stevie's, but I never had to forfeit days or nights with family and friends. I only had to sacrifice those things which I knew I would not benefit in the long term, such a watching TV, scrolling through social media, or other time wasters. I don't know if Stevie had fun 100% of the time, but I do think the joy he received and gave by playing his music made up tenfold and obviously he did not have to sacrifice his love for his wife to do so, which is how this song came to be written in the first place.

@@werndogga To be simply put, it's just like softening and loudening your voice when singing. It helps in adding your playing more pronunciation and expression. About a year into me picking up the guitar, I was smoking a blunt with one of my buddies, and this concert came on PBS. At the time I had no idea who SRV was or even what blues guitar playing was about. I can still remember being completely floored. I had never seen anything like it before and as a guitar player still in his infancy, watching Stevie's command of the instrument was like watching someone do the impossible. I had barely learned my basic open chord shapes and couldn't fathom how he was able to play all over the fretboard and make such insanely beautiful music. Fifteen years later, his playing is still magical to me. Although I've learned many of his songs and licks, I can still see the beauty and complexity of his playing. But no matter how many of us guitar players can sit down and play Lenny note for note, I don't think anyone of us will be able to play it with the amount of soul and pure expression as the man himself. What a gift.

Takes a special level of restraint, skill and teamwork to play with a musician like SRV who can and will change the whole tone of a song with just a single phrase. You can't have your own ego get in the way and start playing something to boast your technical skills and grab the audience's attention away from the main man (SRV in this case).

I remember in 1983 nobody in the guitar community cared about the blues. Everybody was into Eddy van Halen and stuff. Then - whoosh! - SRV appeared. The guitar-world changed forever. He tought us to put emotional meaning into every little tone. The El Mocambo version of "Lenny" is a superb example for this. Everybody do yourself a favor: Lean back, listen to this with headphones, put every source of interruption (telephone and stuff) out of reach. Just you and the music. Allow yourself to dive deeply into it and listen to the story, Stevie tells. Maybe you'll see colors or pictures.

The shame of EVH's influence is that he spawned a whole load of soulless copycat shredders when his own playing was remarkably ferocious and full of great blues and feel. I mean it'll never be SRV 'Lenny' or 'Riviera Paradise' level (what is?) but there is some great stuff in there.

Yes! To be honest I'm not too impressed so much with listening to stuff like "eruption" it's not really something you can listen to over and over for hours and feel a sense of beauty....not like SRV's performance here, this is beautiful....I'd rather hear playing like this than playing that is "too acrobatic" - Jeff Beck......

I think you'd be hard-pressed to find two live versions of the same SRV song that were more than 95% the same. I kind of pulled that percentage out of my ass, but he always seemed to play it the way he was feeling it in that moment. Some versions were better than others, but all of them were virtuosic. Even before he sobered up, when he was so drunk and stoned he could barely open his eyes because of the stage lights, his guitar playing just flowed.

I'm not one to vent online, but I feel that i should pay homage to Mr. Vaughan. Like him, I struggled with addiction and unfortunately I still do to this day. When I am in the darkest depths of my depression, this song seems to have some sort of telekinesis. I'm able to at least sit, listen and gather my thoughts. Stevie's guitar playing transcends the meaning of blues music. It's cathartic, it's therapeutic, it's something powerful. He's no longer with us unfortunately, but he is most definitely not forgotten. Thanks to SRV, decided to use the money I used for drugs to buy myself a guitar. All I can say to Stevie is "Thank You".
