Entertaining and extremely helpful. Up until now my only experience with soldering was tinning and joining wires and replacing the shoulder button on my Steam Deck. But I really wanted to do this mod and your video gave me the confidence and knowledge to do it. I'm still in a bit of disbelief that I was able to solder such small components with just a magnifying glass and $50 soldering station. I had to get a hot air station for desoldering the old port, but that's alright since this project really gave me the confidence to look for other modding projects that I had shyed away from due to the soldering work. Subbed and thanks again for documenting the install of this mod so well!

I’m surprised the data connection worked that well, because D+ and D- are a differential pair and need to match in length, but I guess USB2.0 is quite forgiving in that regard.
@root42 Жыл бұрын
Is it so fragile? These are mere millimeters, right?
@red13emerald Жыл бұрын
@@root42 Indeed. Even if you were to squeeze 10Gbit through a single differential pair, the signal itself is traveling 20 centimeters per bit, so even with a 5 centimeter mismatch the differential signals are clearly related to each other, but that’s not relevant. The whole point of differential pairs is that any interference will equally increase or decrease the voltage in both traces, meaning the voltage difference stays the same. If the traces aren’t length-matched, the differential signals will be shifted in phase, meaning the effects of the interference on each trace will arrive at the receiver at different times, so they don’t cancel each other out anymore. The higher the bandwidth, the more closely these lengths need to be matched because each bit is on the line for a shorter amount of time, so the receiver has less time to monitor the voltages and clearly discern the signal from the noise.

Funny, it always amused me when Steve does fixes like these and says the mod is in the description. I would love to mod my 3 Vita's, but I would not even dream of attempting to as I know I would ruin them. Even when I used to do this for a living (TV and video repairs,) I would not even attempt to solder surface mount components, or components you cannot solder with the naked eye. I just stuck to through hole stuff. I would leave this sort of work to to the experts like Steve ( even though for comedy reasons he pretends not to be.) Also, I never used flux either. Had to look it up when I saw Steve using it to see what it was!

Oh you're missing the secrets right in front of your eyes... Flux is magic. It creates just the right surface tension so you need absolutely no skill with the soldering iron. You just put the heat in the area and everything kind of melts works supposed to with surface mount stuff. But the eyes thing. I feel you man. That's why there's one other secret to everybody who does surface Mount things regularly. We don't look at it. We look at the big screen for the camera or microscope. I still can't do the hand soldering if I have too much caffeine but you can do hot air.
@alexbrown10502 жыл бұрын
Anyone can do surface mount work, just takes a bit of patience, practice and a microscope doesn't hurt. Believe in yourself! Also most people don't use flux because they use flux core solder, which is a more efficient method of applying flux at the same time as solder. It doesn't work if you wick your solder onto the tip and then touch the tip to the component though, so flux helps with that habit.

Decided to buy a microscope similar to your in the near future. Unfortunately can't afford £300 for a soldering iron on top of the scope and wondered if you or your followers had a more budget friendly option that you might consider suitable for micro work on PCB's possibly £100 - £150 available in UK. You might even consider recommending a budget starter kit for people who just want to work on their own gear. Your opinion would be much appreciated. Thanks.

It's been a while since you asked, but if you are still looking, look into the pinecil soldering iron. It's about $26.00 US. Right now, it's out of stock, since they are releasing a new version, but should be back in stock in a few weeks. You can also get the Hakko FX-888D for about $100.00. KZbin channel EEVBlog has a video where he recommends a $330 electronics repair setup if you want to know how to get started on a budget. My advice is to start off with a good soldering iron, multimeter, solder, solder wick, and of course, the blue silicon mat :grinning_face: Then start to repair, and as you need stuff, buy it. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get into repair, at least initially. Good luck!

Can I express on this video how happy I am to have found someone who actually repairs electronics rather than just prettifying them up? I just watched a video where a KZbinr supposedly "restored" a non-functional PSOne. He spent fifteen minutes of the 20-minute video cleaning the outside of the console (with the wrong product, to crown the hilarity), one minute stabbing the circuit board randomly with a multimeter, and four minutes reassembling it and 'playing a game with it'. This despite the fact that he didn’t fix the actually broken power button, he didn’t even seem to check the giant malsoldered mod spidering across the circuit board, and he didn’t even try to hide the fact that the PSOne never actually turned on when he purported to show that it did. There's a place for superficial restoration (especially with respect to mechanical objects, where superficial restoration very often IS restoration - you can't use a rusted poppy seed grinder or a level with a rusted uneven edge), but I'm tired of electronics being prettified instead of properly restored. Thanks for not being one of those KZbinrs, and thanks for honesty. I’d rather see you fail than see one of these guys fake success any day.

@TravisFabel2 жыл бұрын
Sure. I can explain what's going on in this video easily. So you probably get the basic concept of the old proprietary port no longer works so he wants to stick a modern USB-C cable on it. So the first thing he's doing is melting in low melting point solder. This is an alloy of metals that melts easier than what's on there. So you melt it on there and you melt the other stuff that's there and it all mixes together and ends up with a lower melting point than before. He was trying to do it so that he could just heat it all up and it would all stay melty long enough to lift it off but it didn't quite work out that way. So instead, he used his hot air gun. This literally blows out very hot air until the parts are hot enough that the solder melts and becomes liquid. And then he kind of pushed it away when it started to float around there. Then you take away the heat and everything on the board hardens up and you have the slightly melted port in your hand. The stuff that's goopy you see him drooping on everything is called flux. It is a kind of liquid that lets everything float around and move around easily and give surface tension. So you glue it on around the areas and then you put your melted solder that's on your soldering iron in those areas and it just sticks to the metal there and kind of holds the shape. So if the pad is square, the blob of solder is square. It will also let the parts float around and slide into position so that the surface tensions even on both sides. When he puts the resistors in, those rectangular pieces with solder points on each side in the beginning of the video, they kind of get sucked into place properly by the melted solder. And this is just the surface tension sliding around these really light components. I guess I should have started there. He put together the USB-C port piece. USB-C, requires you to have a couple resistors on the device. This lets your USB-C charger know that it's plugged into something. So we soldered those resistors onto the board, and then we put on the connector. And then he goes and puts the whole thing on the device. The big blobby corners that hold it in place, also count as the ground. That first wire he puts on that cuts across and goes to the side, you'll hear him talk about that being the plus side or the 5 volt side. That's the output of the USB-C port power. So that's going to give power into the device as the positive side. So now you have your negative side and your positive side but you don't have your digital signal. You don't have the data connection. You hear him say D-positive and D-negative. The d stands for digital signal. So the positive and negative communication wires is what he's connecting there. With those wires connected, it works just like it did with the proprietary connector for USB. It gives power, and it gives a data connection to the computer. When he's connecting those wires he's using a wire that is coated with a thin almost clear enamel paint. this works as insulation on it so it doesn't directly short out against things. But it's also not very tough and it melts/burns easily. So he can just stick it on the soldering iron and it burns away part of the enamel on it, you can see this because the silver solder gets wicked onto it right up until the area it didn't burn off. So this wire isn't completely bare even though it looks like it is... It's just bare on the ends but it can easily get scratched in short stuff out. So he's putting on a UV mask with the paintbrush. This is a type of chemical that the whole board is actually covered with except for the solder points. The bare metal points that you want to connect with. He coats everything with it and it stays liquid until he puts a UV light on it for a period of time. That's that little block you put over the area. On the TV screen it will look purple because the camera can see part of the UV light but in real life it doesn't look purple, it doesn't look like it's even on... When you put that on, it hardens and becomes solid. So with that solder mask coating it it will hold it in place and keep it insulated. I think that covers most of what he did in the video

For the hot air gun, have you considered using kapton tape to shield the surrounding components? I found it did an excellent job protecting the headphone jack on my 3ds mod

Fantastic content!!! I have absolutely devoured the content on your channel, watching close to 40 videos in the past couple of days. I’ve taken things apart my whole life without any intention of fixing/putting it back together, but you’ve inspired me to give that a go. Bravo, Sir. Bravo.
