My grandfather had one of these in the late 80s. My "fond" memory was that you had to push the pieces hard into the board to have it register your move i.e commit it. Some pieces would leave an indentation on your fingers due to the jagged nature of a Knight etc (i.e. horse's head), particularly as the units got older and needed more force for the move to be registered. Ouch!
@badger23132 жыл бұрын
I had this as a kid way back when they came out, that its so old and has the pieces still in it is impressive.

great fix i was confused why it was checkmate at first but then i realized that stez may have mixed up the positions of the knights and bishops places on both sides (if im looking right) because if it was correct it would only be check

I got one of these new in the 80s and recently found it again, same problems but worse corrosion on the terminals, put them in lemon juice and had to replace a wire that had wicked the corrosion up. All working now, polished up the case. It came with 4 spare queen pieces, 2 of each colour.

Something quite nostalgic and fun about a chess game with just LEDs and a bleeper. None of this techy rubbish, LCDs, sound effects, just the basics. Impressive how everything is driven by one custom chip with hardly any ancillary components. I guess some rookie considered taking this to a pawn shop, but after a price check mate, he popped in his local bishop for some chips and decided instead that knight to put it on ebay. After you queened it up it's looking like the king of the chess sets! Nice repair, and a nice connection back to BBC Wales (my hometown). 😊

God this video took me back a bit !! I used to HAVE a SciSys Travel Mate II before I upgraded to the Kasparov Chess Computer. Many happy (& frustrating hours) trying to beat the computer. The initial light on the left hand side lighting up the number ONE, shows that the computer is playing at LEVEL ONE out of 8 (8 being the hardest level of course). I think the highest level I ever got where I was still able to fairly consistently beat the computer was level 5.

Ooh I have the cheaper version of this. Mine is a hand held computer with a small screen. It came with a plastic chess set and a fold up cardboard board. You input the start and end move just like this but with number and letter buttons and it tells you its move. I remember looking at those fancier sets and thinking they were way too expensive . I think I got mine in about 1980. If the batteries are running low, it cheats.

It was fun back then & I didn't think about danger at the time. But now you make me think about it, I can see it's like something from last of the summer wine. I haven't watched that in a while, the episode when they say Bye to Compo on the hill makes me cry. I've done something dangerous without knowing it, until hours later when the sun come up & the ramblers appeared. I drove up Brecon Beacons with 2 friends at 3am in the morning for Ham radio distance talking & when the fog cleared and all these people staring at us, I looked down and needed new underwear. If I had steered 2/3 inches to the right we'd have all been dead!! The cliff drop looking down from the path I drove up in the fog. Scared the living day lights out of me, going down it I was so nervous and my foot never left the brake 😂 Steve brother IF You ever want a thrill drive come with me! early hours up there, You'll need to bring clean underwear 🤣
