Fantastic presentation Brandon! .l I’m currently a welding student at a local junior college and I have to say, you covered all the main points we covered in my introduction to welding class (where I learned to arc weld for the first time). You are one of my favorite channels to watch. Your genuine and humble demeanor makes you fun to watch. You’re an excellent teacher. Keep up the good work!

I also seen a guy that used a head band style led light. He removed the strap and just velcroed it straight to the welding helmet. I thought that was a super cool idea too. My Atak headlamp is super bright and rechargeable… I highly recommend it if you’re interested in a nice rechargeable headlamp. The charger cable is magnetic too so you don’t have to fight with plugging a cord in. Which also means the bottom of the headlamp is magnetic so you can take it out and stick it to a piece of metal and focus the light wherever you want…. No charge for that tip…😉😆

Dare I say you can stick weld anything with 130-140 amps I’ve welded 2.5 inch thick plate with 1/8 6010 and 7018. Just bevel it out and burn the root pass in with 6010 and then start laying stringers with 7018. It’s not quick but it’s structurally sound. Single pass welds at high amps on thicker material are more likely to have structural issues then multi pass ones in my experience.

Being around welding for most of my working life didn't realize there were so many things to consider on different types of welding. I enjoy watching your videos and I'm trying to learn from the best. The first time I welded didn't have any idea to what I was doing. I tried welding too quickly across the metal and I saw the outcome and thought hmmm. I need to slow down a lot.

Good explanations for the newbe welder. I have watched quite a few videos on these yes welders and many report problems with them. One glaring problem was that their reported voltage and amperages are 25% and more out. These guys used amp meters and checked amps while welding ,it was guite the eye opener. One guy opened up the welder what a dogs breakfast of wires.
@BrandonLund

Thats interesting @Bruce D I might have to pop one open and take a look. I'm curious now. My experience is that they feel like they run slightly hot but again that's going from the seat of my pants and not using a clamp on amp meter.

Thanks Mate 🍻,, I used my MIG205DS for the first time running Stick,, and WOW! What a difference compared to the first machine I purchased for training. Much smoother amperage delivery once I had it dialed in correctly for the material thickness(3/16"). Plus my comfort level running stick is getting better. Yay! Thanks for the great information. Have a good weekend. Cheers 🍻, G.

I see a lot of people grounding to the work table. Is there a drawback to grounding to the work piece?
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 жыл бұрын
Grounding to the work piece is actually the best way to do it because it creates the least amount of electrical resistance when welding, however people generally ground the table to save time moving the ground clamp each time they manipulate their part.

Brandon, an uncle of mine used an ac hi frequency box when he welded rusty or painted steel as it penetrated right to the base metal. Typically this is for welding aluminum, but he found a benefit on steel. I tried it, and it seemed to do okay, especially in areas such as, say, farm equipment, where grinding was not an easy choice.

Thanks @Jim MacSuga I appreciate it. A lot of those brake rotors are made of cast iron. I'm guessing you were getting some cracking? I was surprised they were made of cast iron but I have experienced the difficulty welding on them also.
@jimmacsuga2592
@jimmacsuga2592 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonLund I did not see any cracking, but I did not look too close!!! It was only a bike stand that I made for working on my bike. It stuck, and that is all I needed!!! I will probably not use that type of steel in the future unless I use the bolt holes to secure a more useful steel!!! Be well, be safe, and keep the vids coming!

Hey Buddy . . .the work light is a great idea. . . . I need to spend more time practicing Stick because I love it the most . . . I found Mig easier to fabricate with, but Stick is my preference. Thanks for posting this video. Appreciate it.

I feel the same Daniel. I like MIG too but there is just something about stick welding that is so enjoyable. For the light I was just using a small led but if you use one of those halogen flood lamps, that works really well also. Take care buddy!

For those that don't know, cotton clothing is typically less flammable than those of a synthetic composition such as nylon or polyester. Cotton will, of course burn, by synthetics typically melt, and can do more harm when ignited than cotton, especially to skin. Also, when welding or cutting metal, don't carry a lighter in your pocket, especially a plastic lighter, as they are plastic and contain flammable butane, and can explode when struck by a fireball.

I wish I saw this video back in November 🤣 got burned and electrocuted a few times,lol, it's all good. Last October I got horrible news from my doctor so I quit my job and decided to do something new and exciting so fabrication! It's been awesome building all my tools but limiting. Living on long Island you deal with a lot of traffic so my dream is to build a Evtol (a drone with seats for people) to get around the traffic. I made a design now trying smaller versions first. I think aluminum is key that's why learning to weld is the goal. Lmao, you probably think I'm crazy, only a little 🤪

As far as being crazy...probably...LOL I think anyone that posesses a talent to build, come up with ideas and ways to do things that are different than the "norms" are usually people that are intellectual. Most minds that work this way are innovators. They see things in a way others cant. Einstein comes to mind. People thought that guy was insane LOL. Thanks again man for you SUB. Brandon, polycarbonate safety lenses are safer than glass, as the fireballs don't stick as quickly, and this makes them last longer and are easier to keep clean.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 жыл бұрын
Thats what I use also (polycarbonate) I'm not sure they make a "glass" safety glass but I suppose it's possible. I've never seen actual glass ones though.
@Farm_fab
@Farm_fab 2 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonLund glass has been the standard for a lot of years. In more recent years, polycarbonate has become more of a standard. Next time you stop by your welding supplier, see if they still have glass. I got a bunch of cutoffs from a local plastics company, so I cut my own as needed.

Great tips again Brandon- Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Very helpful. One question- when you start a new rod do you chip off the initial tip of the flux from the end so that it will strike??.
@BrandonLund
@BrandonLund 2 жыл бұрын
@Michael Andersaon thanks man and thats a great question. I wish I would have addressed it in the video now that you mention it. No you dont have to do this to a fresh rod. They are manufactured so that the center metal core is exposed. It's only after you strike the arc that you have to do this sometimes.
