I have a stihl bg55 a friend gave me. Didn't know what was wrong with it so I opened up the the case and boom! The bottom bearing of the connecting rod was gone just like this one. Tried looking for a new crankshaft, couldn't find one. So what I did was get a used stihl bg50 engine for under 40$ installed it, and now runs perfect. It has 125psi compression and is in perfect condition internally. Hope it lasts a long time!

Can those bearings be replaced? If so, how do you take the piston off the shaft?
@craigtimmons3468 Жыл бұрын
If and i say IF you could source a caged needle bearing for the large end (crank) pin then yes you could press one of the crank throws off the crank pin and install a new bearing but the issue now becomes, is the crank pin within spec (good) and you would need to make 100% sure you reassembled it back into the exact position as before it was separated, so you would have to fabricate and use some sort of a jig, other wise you will wind up with vibration that will cause bearing failure.

Any ideas on where to get the crank assembly? Or as Cole mentioned, where to get a new bg50 engine??? Btw keep makin’ videos, and I knew exactly what you saw when you started going “woah”, I said the same thing when I popped open the crankcase 😳
@craigtimmons34682 жыл бұрын
There are several places on line that have new cranks rather expensive though, Your best bet is EBay, Craigs List, Yard/Garage Sales and Flee Markets. There are several different models that use the same crank, you can research this on line. www.farmertec.com has an inexpensive aftermarket piston cylinder kit that I've used several times with good results and they can be found elsewhere also just be cautious of cheap parts.

I got mine apart but can’t get the flywheel off. Any help? This is my first time tearing down one of these but want to learn
@craigtimmons34683 жыл бұрын
Loosen the flywheel nut to where the top of the nut is flush with the end of the shaft, then use the socket with a short extension (you may have to use a small spacer of some sort in the scoket to take up space) and tap the extension with a hammer (with some force) while either holding the engine up by the flywheel with your hand or by using something as a pry bar to put pressure onto the underside of the flywheel (being very careful not to break anything) and tap the extension while putting upward pressure onto the underside of the flywheel. This may take several persuasive taps but it will break loose. This is how I do more than 90% of mine. GOOD LUCK

those BG 55 are just like the bg86 they LOVE to eat rod bearings and not many parts surplus out in the wild either .

Your right and most people know this and want 4 times what it should cost If you can wait a good deal generally comes around but it may take a few months.

My Stihl started last week, but this week is won't start. Everything is turning over on the pull, but no ignition. Suggestions?
@craigtimmons34684 жыл бұрын
When you say no ignition I'm assuming you mean its not popping, You do have gas in it right,, dump that gas out and try fresh gas, is it flooded? check for spark at the plug making sure its nice and blue and strong on the end of the center electrode, hows the compression feel, pull the muffler and check for scoring, this can keep it from running, try putting a little gas mix right down the carburetor and see if it starts
@beebob12794 жыл бұрын
@@craigtimmons3468 I'm smelling gas and it's flooding when I'm trying to get it started. It's not not firing. I'll pull the spark plug tomorrow to see how it is. thanks,

I have two 86C's, they are great vacs but lack the gutts of my Makita BHX2501 as blowers. Is it just a case of returning or are they just not as powerful?
@craigtimmons34684 жыл бұрын
I really can't comment on how they compare since I have no knowledge of the Makita BHX2501 model.

Same problem. But I can't get the flywheel off, and the threads are now damaged.
@craigtimmons34684 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that. To remove the flywheel I run the flywheel nut to a point that it's just higher that the threads and using a brass hammer rapped on the nut firmly while holding the flywheel with the other hand while suspending the it a small distance above the bench. As for the messed up threads you can try to run a 8mmx1.0 right hand thread Die on the crank to try and straighten out the threads. Good luck.

@@craigtimmons3468 Thanks for the tip. Got it off and found another bottom end and crank, so I'm good. Crank bearing seems good, a little side to side play, but no vertical or end play in the rod. Now just waiting for piston kit and hopefully get this bad boy running again. Your video is a major help. Thanks again.
