Nice comparison… I just sold my 361 and bought the 400. Loved my 361 but the 400 is noticeably more powerful. I added the Stihl ES 20” light bar so my weight is about the same as my 361 and about a whole 1 HP more with the 400. I’m just cutting firewood, so it’s all the saw I need, but I must admit I been eyeballing the 462…. Just need to sell a little more firewood, I keep telling myself.

Yeah the 400 is sweet. If your only running a 20” bar the 462 isn’t going to be a ton more noticeable. It is better with a 25-28” bar if you need something for bigger wood

I cut alot of windblown oak, tree service leftovers, and doh cleanup wood and big red oaks are fairly common to clean up. I always wanna keep a 70cc saw so I can cut em up. The biggest ones that's come my way are 30-32" so itd be time consuming with a 20" bar. I run a ms441c with a 28" bar for my big stuff. I agree that if most of what you're cutting is able to be done with a 20" bar stick with the lighter cheaper saw. My 441 is a tick less than 15lbs empty I think, but it's a great saw. Pulls a 28" full comp chain in oak pretty darn well and saves me from having to climb across or walk around to finish cuts on big trees.

I grew up with saws that oiled noticeably more than most modern stihls, and was skeptical when I first 2 of them a dozen years ago. My ms310 oils ok,but its somewhat stingy. My ms441cm ( by my standards) barely kept its 20" bar oiled. I added a 28" bar and turned the ouler up and it didnt look good, but I had work to do. In the 10 years since the only chains I ever replaced were because theyd been filed to the end of their life. The 20" bar on the ms310 and the 28" on the ms441 have held up well and after having been file dressed and through many many chains I can honestly report that the bars held up fine. I've never needed to replace a tip and I've never had any warpahe or bluing. Both of these bars are standard stihl es bars. I usually cut 5-6 cord a year.

Most folks who wanna run a longer bar on the 400 swap the factory oil pump for that of a ms462. Itll oil up to a 32" easy and it's the same pump housing, just has different internal parts. Bolts right in for about $125 oem,or you can opt for a ms462 pump rebuild kit and swap out the internals on the pump in your 400. Itd cut the cost by about 1/2,if that's a direction youd wanna go.

60cc saws are Great for 18 20 inch hard wood. When you want to run a 25 or 28 or 32 you need to get into the 70cc saws in my opinion... The 462 cant be compared to a 800 60cc saw.. Especially when you put the WCSs upgrades on it. I own both and its kinda unfair to compare them. Like I said you dont use a sledge hammer to drive in average sized nails. You dont Cut wood thats 28 30 inch with a 60cc saw.. You can but its going to put the saw to the max and it will also over work the saw... I own a few saws and to me if you do tree work you need 4 or 5 saws. 2 smalls 2 med 1 big. My smalls are 180 with the big tooth and a few other small saws battery makita and couple of older saws. My MID saws are 261 and 362 and my old trusty 036. My Big saws are 462 and 661. I like cutting trees and doing firewood. I help a buddy sometimes do tree work if he needs. so im ready to tackle pretty much what ever comes. SMALL MID BIG is a good way to go. small 30cc mid 50cc 60cc and you need a 70cc saw.. there is nothing like the 70cc saws. 500i or 462. Those 2 are the wild card of saws. High RPM and High HP. The 661 will pull a bigger bar but its slow rpm wise. so unless you want to run a 36 or something 462 500i.

I appreciate your enthusiasm, and I'm not knockin the ms310. I have one with a ported muffler and it's a solid firewood saw runnin a 20" bar. I've also have an ms441c the last 10 years and with the same 20" bar and chain the 441 smokes the 310. The ms441c is a not so great first attempt that stihl made their mtronic beginning with and its probably gonna cut close to what that ms400c does, but it also weighs like 4lbs more and is ridiculous to work on. The 400c will handily beat an ms310,all other things being equal.
