There's a unique rally car that was raced in New Zealand in the 90s. As far as I can tell, it was only ever raced once or twice, and there's not very much information on it. But what I do recall was probably the most unusual thing I've ever heard of. It was based on a Mazda 323, though I don't know if Mazda themselves were involved. However, the driver sat where the backseats would normally be, because in front was two turbocharged rotary engines. Not just that, but the car was also SIX WHEEL DRIVE. It had a second front axle behind the first that could also steer. So therefore it was a "turbocharged twin-steer twin engine six wheel drive back-seat-driven Mazda 323 rally car", technically. Very interesting and unique car, kind of sad that there isn't much information on it.

My favourite obscure twin engined car is the Citroen 2CV Safari. How did Citroen make a 4WD 2CV with it remaining cheap and reliable ? Simple, put another engine in the back and sell it to the public like that. They're less rare than you'd think, with some popping up in the classic car market from time to time.

@HATECELL Жыл бұрын
Typically they use a "collector gearbox" that puts the power onto a single shaft, which then goes to the gearbox. Mechanisms to disconnect individual engines aren't common, they would just add weight and complexity, and if one of the engines isn't running the tractor isn't competitive anyway

No multi-engine racecar list is complete without the 1966 Stein Twin-Porsche Indy car, an ambitious creation constructed by famed builder Joe Huffaker and powered by a 2.0L 911 flat-six at each end. The car DNQ'd for that year's Indianapolis 500 and never ran again. And there was also the Seat Ibiza Bimotor, which likely had a future in the WRC's Group S ranks had that ruleset not been thrown out together with Group B.

going by the "joining 2 engines into 1" logic, honorable mentions would be the hayabusa v8, which combines 2 inline 4 motorcycle engine and is used in cars like the ariel atom v8 and basically all rotary engines cos you can just stack them and make a longer shaft. great video anyways, love it!

Rob Dahm's got some videos of a 12-rotor engine, it was built (not by him) for marine use but it's just three quad-rotor engines somehow stuck together. I don't even think they use a Mazda rotor housing as a module, pretty sure it's all custom made.

Some other cool multi-engined vehicles: the red porsche killer (drag bike with 4 1cyl engines), the Dolmette (drag bike with 24 engines from Dolmar chainsaws), various land speed record vehicles from the "Campbell/Segrave era", Zil 135 (military 8x8 truck), some Mini Mokes (light 4x4 using two Mini-drivetrains), Citroën 2CV 4x4 Sahara (a 2CV with two drivetrains to achieve 4x4)
@HATECELL Жыл бұрын
There are even some roadcars with multiple engines. The 2CV and the Mini both had offroad versions with a second drivetrain in the rear. The Cizeta Moroder V16T technically used two V8s with a power take off in the middle. Then there are several engines that are derived from adding or removing cylinders to existing engines. A few famous examples. The E30 BMW M3 used the engine from the M1 with two cylinders removed, the Peugeot 907 concept had a V12 made from two Peugeot V6s, the Volvo Penta B40 (marine V8 engine) was basically two B20s (2 liter inline 4 car engines) and the Radical SR8 uses a V8 derived from 2 Hayabusa engines. And even Cosworth's DFV has an inline-4 spinoff
@McLeod917 Жыл бұрын
Great video. Finally got around to watching it. Indycar had some very competitive twin engined cars like the 1946 Fageol Twin Coach Special that qualified middle of the front row using twin Offenhauser engines. And the Sampson V16 that put two miller 122 ci straight 8s together. There are other less successful U16 engine designs as well, combining two I8s in a new form. They are all a bit hard to look up but they are worth it. Thanks again for all your videos. always looking forward to more.

not sure if this counts given its not a race car, just a show car, but a twin engined car that stands out in my mind is the Hot Wheels Twin Mill, they made a full sized build of it for one of their anniversaries, and despite it being just a showcar, it does run on both of its engines, it runs on twin supercharged v8s that (supposedly) make a combined output of 1400 horsepower

In 1966 after the release of the Oldsmobile Toronado with its 425 c.i. (7 liter) front wheel drive powertrain, there were TWO famously unsuccessful serious cars built using a pair of SUPERCHARGED Olds motors front end rear for a all wheel drive, tire smoking, out of control Funny Car that was more likely to wind up on top of the guard rail then make it down the track... look up the 'TERRIFYING TORNADO' and the 'HURST HAIRY OLDS'...
