I'm 30 years longer into endurance racing and it has had it's ups and downs in popularity over the years. I hope racing in the top class gets more competitive and a bit faster again. And a rise in popularity again, not only for Le Mans, would be nice. But, I hope it will never become as popular as for example F1 and turn into a gigantic corporate monster like that. Endurance racing should be for the real racing enthousiasts imo

It sounds a bit cringe but I hope the Gran Turismo movie is okay, the trailers aren't too promising but the story of Jann Mardenborough and how he got a drive in LMP2 and the infamous GTR LM project was truly amazing and if it gets endurance racing more exposure I can't be against that.

One other thing worth mentioning about McQueen's Le Mans movie is, as they were so dedicated to providing accurate 'race' footage, David Piper ended up losing his leg in an accident during filming. Piper was a period privateer and several of the cars loaned for the movie belonged to him, so naturally he was a driver in many of the scenes. Still continued racing up until very recently, despite his amputated leg.

Honestly, a great concept for an endurance racing adaptation can be a TV series in the same format as 24. A racing team trying to win Le Mans, 24 Hours of Daytona, or Nurburgring 24 and tells its story by splitting it into hourly episodes. Might sounds boring but I believe It can work.
@amaizeing.dumbass5123 Жыл бұрын
Doesn't sound boring, but does look like a nightmare to produce. Might need a bigger budget than Titanic or Avatar just for pre-production

The only issue with being a sportscar racing nerd and watching these movies is that you spot all the little mistakes. Like in the Gran Turismo trailer there's a shot where a GT4 car (Aston I believe) starts in the middle of a gt3 field and it annoys me SO MUCH.

I actually enjoyed Michel Vaillant movie! Definitely an interesting take on Le Mans race which, despite its flaws, is enjoyable. Also to note: rallying is represented by this Japanese movie called Over Drive. Haven't been able to watch it but it's definitely on my bucket list. Not sure if there are more rally-themed movies out there but I can only name this one out.

As a filmmaker and racing enthusiast I've felt a disconnect in the big budget racing films (especially ford v ferrari) in leaving out or just making up a new story to tell for a general audience, instead of trying to bring out a story from a real racing event or circumstance. For example, the whole wrench subplot in ford v ferrari. It just didnt happen but was invented for the film to give us an emotional touch point to connect the characters. However in real life, something that the movie left out was the it was in fact Carol Shelbys idea to do the 3 way photo finish. And he always felt very guilty about that because it ended up costing Ken Miles his chance at the "Triple Crown", forever as he would die the next year. I find the true story much more interesting. Or the fact that every ford v8 that raced in the 66 lemans had already run a "test" race, hooked up to a dyno that would automatically shift and rev the engines to emulate the Le Mans course. They had in effect run a 24 hour race on a dyno, and THEN raced at le mans. Amazing! And probably the most American big budget example of how ford brought industrial might to combat ferraris bespoke perfectionism. But left out of the movie. I've personally been turning to club racing, like SCCA events and GLTC, because they are easily accessible and just as interesting to watch in my opinion. The speeds are slower, but you can actually meet the drivers at these events. I even filmed a documentary at the last GLTC event at Watkins Glen to try and add my work into the racing world and tell the stories of actual races. Lets hope we see more endurance racing content that doesn't feel the need to just clone Drive to Survive. Thanks for making this video to talk about media and racing.
@stijnpaspont Жыл бұрын
thanks! think the main problem ford vs ferrari has is that they somehow had to cram a several year long program and multiple 24h of le mans races into 2 hours and 30 minutes long movie format. that's simply impossible.
@solracer66 Жыл бұрын
I was really upset that they were so lazy they didn't get the ending right in Ford v Ferrari, no #5 car dropping back at the last minute and most importantly no rain which just showed to me that the filmmakers didn't give a damn about replicating what is an iconic photo for those that know the real story. By the way the #5 car was offered for sale in Road & Track back in the early 1970s for $10,000!

@@stijnpaspont It's definitely not an easy job adapting history to a narrative film. I can see why they made the choices that they did, and they definitely create a fun space for Matt Damon and Christian Bale to act in, they were very fun to watch. I just know (as I'm sure most of us enthusiasts know) the real story and love it and want to see it told. What Ron Howard did with Apollo 13 I thought was a great example walking the line between historical reality and dramatic presentation.
