I'm quite surprised Tiff of all people doesn't know how to drive a diesel properly. Peak power comes in around 4000rpm, going to 5000rpm is just making more noise and not getting any more power.

2011 320ed mapped to 225bhp/443nm for GBP225 and still easily returns 60mpg when driven sensibly. 0-60mph in 6 seconds when not driven sensibly :-D

I can't understand what a racing driver would be trying to do by redlining a diesel, they should shift right after they hit the power band, at 5000 rpm it would be totally dead, wasting time
@EdwardianGangster
@EdwardianGangster 7 жыл бұрын
In this engine it isn't as Tiff said, this engine holds power well, even after after max torque has come and gone. Certainly the E9X D3 would be worth revving out for maximum performance and I suspect it is the same story for this engine.
@HenkkaWRC
@HenkkaWRC 7 жыл бұрын
Actually revving higher might make the car accelerate faster. Altough you might make less engine torque, you could still might make more wheel torque on that lower gear when compared to higher gear, so it's actually better to rev to the redline. This is the case with most of the cars out there. Engineering Explained has great video about this subject: goo.gl/ryPQ5m You can actually calculate it by yourself if you doubt about it. All you need is the gear ratios of each gear and the engine torque curve to do the math.
@Roxak

BMW diesels rev much higher and nicer than any other diesels, a VW TDI or similar would hit the limiter way before 5000...
@Aadilf1
@Aadilf1 6 жыл бұрын
With my E90 320D, I'd shift around 4000, after that you lose a lot of torque, between 2500 and 4000 is the sweet spot.

Why the hell does it say it's a D3 BiTurbo if it's no Bi-Turbocharged? What the f*ck Alpina....
@EdwardianGangster
@EdwardianGangster 7 жыл бұрын
It is indeed a twin turbo
@RustyRenesis
@RustyRenesis 7 жыл бұрын
It can't be. The gain of only 27hp by the addition of that extra turbo is really weird. Also, Bi Turbocharged is not the same as Twin Turbocharged. Bi Turbos are two completely separate turbos, they both have separate intercoolers and wastegates. The Twin Turbos are normally bought in setups of two and they both use the same intercooler and wastegate and they offer more reliability than power.
@EdwardianGangster
@EdwardianGangster 7 жыл бұрын
A gain of "only 27hp" - over the standard 320D, not the standard D3 - being "really weird" is not a basis for it not being twin turbocharged. It also isn't a basis to effectively call Alpina liars... The Biturbo also gains an extra 50nm of torque over the standard D3, considering putting a bigger single turbo on the car would only increase lag (remember at the time twin scroll turbos were not commonplace in BMW's like they are now), the decision to go for two smaller turbos makes sense. I would imagine the gains from adding an extra turbo are only relatively small, because of the limits of the engine. The first gen D3 and D3 Biturbo have been the only Alpinas ever not to be assembled at the factory in Buchloe but rather by BMW. No internal work (as standard with Alpinas) was done on these engines, just bolt ons effectively - injectors, intercooler, turbo etc. Seems logical that there is only so much you can over-boost and over-fuel a standard 4cyl diesel (built for commuters) before you run into reliability issues. I don't agree with your point about the differentiation in wording between Biturbo and twin turbo, at all, there are too many reasons why to list here, cite your sources though and I'm happy to be proven wrong.
@RustyRenesis
@RustyRenesis 7 жыл бұрын
100% agree with what you said. It's not MY differentiation in wording, it's exactly how it is. The difference of wording exists that's why i told you because you referred to BiTurbo being the same as Twin Turbos, which is why i explained it.
@EdwardianGangster
@EdwardianGangster 7 жыл бұрын
Cite your sources, I think this is a somewhat common misconception. How a manufacturer decides to express the fact that their engine has two turbos attached to it actually doesn't relate to how the turbos have been plumbed. It's arbitrary. There are many ways of plumbing a twin turbo system, and twin and bi are just synonyms for two when prefixing turbo. If there seems to be a correlation it is purely coincidental. The RB26DETT was labelled as twin turbo and it's turbos were set up in parallel. The E9X generation of B3 Biturbo based on the N54 engine (and I believe it will be the same story on the newer F chassis N55 based cars) also used the Biturbo terminology even though the turbos on the alpina engine (assuming they are in the same set up as the BMW version of the engine on which it is based) are also in parallel.

@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 6 жыл бұрын
Don't know how you work that out. 20 year old BMW diesels are still going strong today, with lots of life left in them - at least 10 years and more. You can still buy BMW diesels brand new today so no reason to think they won't still be going fine themselves 30 years from now too.
@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 6 жыл бұрын
And today, the known world oil reserves are higher than they've ever been in history. Even at the current useage rates that equals 50 years but there is no reason to think that we will not discover even more oil. Those facts combined with the great improvements in electrical technologies both in generation and use of it means we likely have several hundred years of diesel availability if we choose to use it.

Used that maybe so, but new the 330d was at least £4k more than the D3 so comparing them would have made no sense. Would be comparing apples with oranges. Ditto the S5/D3 comparison.

@hottuberrol968
@hottuberrol968 7 жыл бұрын
Chris Carbaugh underpowered? Last years D4 (same engine I assume as the d3) was the highest torque diesel production car (cue Jeremy Clarkson voice) in the world. I've driven both the petrol and the diesel. My daily drive is an e92 M3 - a V8. The d4 is almost as quick . Are you sure the higher level of refinement of the Alpina (not to mention smooth suspension versus your bone shuddering Audi) didn't lull you into a sense that it wasn't powerful ?
