How a city can go from how it was to how it is now, so quickly, is gob smacking. If the council was trying to destroy the city, they couldn't do a better job.

Aye. The city has been poor for as long as I have known it as the loss of the coal and steel industries was a blow to the economy and then the potteries leaving just dropped the lid on the coffin. But the people were fine; friendly and using sarcasm and humour to live with the gradual financial decline. Hanley used to be a decent shopping centre in the 80's and there were good pubs with live music or rock DJ nights here and there all over ... but in the past five or ten years the whole area has really gone to ruin. I lived there during the 80's and 90's. I lived in Bucknall for a bit, then a couple of places in Stoke itself and then up in Longton. After a few years elsewhere I came back and lived on the outskirts of Longton again. I was only there for a couple of years but it was still okay then - I left in 2006 and it seems like I missed that 'event' which caused it all to collapse. Seeing these videos is quite heart-breaking as they show how quickly things can fall apart and how bad it can get if you do things to fracture the sense of community (such as messing with the infrastructure and 'shipping' folk in that don't belong or contribute).

Recently found your channel and it’s a real eye opener and incredibly sad that officials are permitting and overseeing this squalor and decay. You’d have thought the local papers would be all over this. Thank you for trying to make a difference.

The Sentinel sells under 9000 copies a day now, so even if this was in the paper, there would be virtually nobody reading it anyway. As it's owned by Reach, all the resources will be being diverted to StaffordshireLive - which I assume is full of celeb nonsense and clickbait like all Reach's "Live" websites.

The pedestrianised streets for shoppers is just ironic when the shops are either non-existent or so bad ! Utter dump of a place !

Worst part about alot of that rubbish is that it takes seconds for2 council workers to turn up and chuck on the back of a van, surely there should be a dedicated team of even just 2 people to clean the mess up everyday, would make a massive difference. Not been Hanley in years but it needs investment and it needs apartment blocks building to rejuvenate the city centre just like they did in Manchester, a higher population means more demand for shops, bars/eateries which creates a nicer place. One day I hope Hanley will be on the up. Great video and keep exposing the council if that's what we can call them.

Thank you my friend we keep hearing a lot of things about “vision “ for the city centre but that’s all it ever is just white noise nothing materialises. And then they wonder why the people are pessimistic about anything?

You're absolutely spot on, it's no wonder there is no faith, Stoke on Trent Council have failed miserably with the running of the city and should be ashamed. Areas like Stoke and others in the country need to be scrutinised and the councils need taking over by central government if they aren't fit for the job and demands of local residents. Fingers crossed sometime in the future Stoke will be back on the up!@@DJMtv1938

I live in Nth London and our streets are bad, flytipping has become 'normal' and every day on my early morning walks i see more and more rubbish. My council are very quick to clear the fly tips but they are under pressure. I've chatted with the guys and they are spot on lads doing a tough job. Our local authority have recently implemented a new system where all problem areas have a dedicated 2 man team and they are doing a sterling job. The council have also come down heavy on fly tippers, dished out some big fines and the message seems to be getting through. The problem, it has to be said and is a fact, it's certain demographics that are the main culprits, i have caught them using my vans dash cam with the footage sent to the council and they do act, as do i with a strong anonymous letter sent through the post.

The oh-so-inappropriately named Hope Street! Tho' back in the days when Sherwins was still open at the top corner it didn't seem so bad (the cake shop has occupied that space now it seems). It's been many years since I was last there - 2006 I think, when I went to the music shop and bought a couple of guitars as my missus said she wanted to learn (she never did :)). That must have been before all the demolition. It was always a street with a dodgy reputation as the ... ahem ... 'friendly' ladies used to hang around out that way but at least there wasn't a building full of addicts there (not counting the beer addicted bikers at the Black Horse nearby (of which I was one on occasion) :D).

Our whole Nation is being let down by the political system that is suited to the 19th Century and cannot adjust to the pace of the 21st Century. Leveling up in Stoke wont occur the money will be frittered away to political and Religeonist groups . It's almost a wasteland. As the local economy declines , as it will, the City once proud of it's working class heritage will die in front of our eyes and become a ghetto financed by drugs. Weakness has attracted weakness! Human's have always had to accept Change but at this pace? We dont need political doctrine we need positive action or chaos will rule!

Every city centre across the country are facing the same problems… instead of showing the city centre “dead” why don’t you do a video of it on a busy Saturday around diner time when it’s busting with customers? I live in Newcastle under Lyme and I go into Hanley regularly… it’s not as bad as some city centres I’ve been to recently!!
