Got my great grandfather's footlocker from WW2. My dad and I went through it found his swagger stick. Plus found a grenade with a circle welded to the bottom to make it sort of like a desk ornament. But the thing about the grenade us that it still has the pin and everything in it. Would it be a test or dummy grenade?

I think it's the pridefulness that kind of sets some people off and want to mess with Veterans. If you want to talk about your service, it's best to make it a story and give some sort of moral or example of what to or what not to do at the end of the story.

I had an uncle that was absolutely 100% USMC and deployed to Vietnam. He was forever an alcoholic and suffered from mental illness/PTSD. 100% of the time I saw him he was wearing a white t shirt with his cigarettes rolled into the sleeves and wearing his dog tags. He was at a bar one time talking sit about his time in Vietnam and some guys called him out as a non GI stolen valor. They end up beating him a bit, dragging him out, taking his tags. Screaming stolen valor at him. He tells that story so broken hearted. The one brotherhood he still believed in, betrayed him, in the name of some stolen valor macho bullsit. People need to be careful with this stolen valor trend. Sure, there's a lot of bad actors out there. But there's a lot of mental illness, addiction, etc. Even if they never were military, their mental illness is often their reality. Count yourself lucky not to suffer from mental illness.

I did close to 12 years in the ARMY during the last decade of the cold war. A week after my ETS I was detained by the local police and got arrested for walking while intoxicated.I had only taken two beers. They pushed me around quite often and even invited me to fight under a bridge while they where taking me arrested to the police station. I was released the next morning, under time served in jail. After that experience I never carried anything in my wallet that could identify me as a veteran...

I tried the Navy in 1991 and was mediacly discharged due to feet issues. After surgery I tried the Army at Fort Benning in 1993 and still could not serve my country. Mediacly discharged again due to feet. I failed to serve my country and always will thank every service member I meet, because they are doing at what I failed to do. There is no pain greater than taking away someone's dream and living with knowledge that I am a failure. To all who read this and is or has served, thank you for your service and sacrifice. God bless you.

I am completely in your shoes, but you are not a failure. I too tried and was rejected due to asthma, and I let it eat at me for a long time. My entire family is filled with service and I felt like I let them down, but then came to realize that to serve is indeed a privilege, not a right. I would be doing a disservice by serving when I know I am not physically up to the job, that would endanger myself and others. So I support from the sidelines while those who are able go in my stead.

He qualified and received a transport van ($42k) and a state of the art wheelchair ($22k), and he got the best healtcare that I have ever seen! I've had two friend's fathers who survived Vietnam. One stepped on some kind of land mine and the shrapnel blinded him and pieces embedded in his face and entire front side of his body. He lived with bluish greyish metal splatter under his skin on his face/neck, still caused nerve pain. He volunteered at a center helping others adjust to life coming home injured. The most incredible humble guy, still had hope and a huge love for life. The other man came home and worked in a steel mill. Broken marriage, functional alcoholic, again an amazing man, but SO broken from the pure HELL of war he survived! How absolutely disrespectful are these frauds! Is "stolen valor" a crime? If not, it most definitely s/b. It's bad enough so many vets don't get the help and attention they need upon returning home. Then, for society to tolerate these f*cks faking service! WRONG! I'm an Air Force veteran, I was a flyer and the stuff on his left arm is from a flight suit. Why he has Air Force tapes on an Army uniform is beyond me, but the 2 small patches on the left shoulder are what we call "pen tab patches" on the old flight suits, which I think have all been phased out to the new 2 piece ones, but the Top Gun style zipper suits, there is a pen pocket on the left sleeve with a little flap that velcros down. Most guy would take a knife and cut that flap off because it looked shitty and bunched up. Most units let you were a personalized patch on the velcro where that patch would rest, so they were small rectangular patches. Common things were sports teams, schools, states, etc. things like that. The other patch on his left shoulder goes on the front of the flight suit opposite the name tape. That is the command patch. So you'd have unit on one shoulder, command patch on the front, name tape on the front, and then American flag on the other shoulder (although the flag went in and out of style while I was in).

I know 3 men who served and suffered with ptsd. My great uncle was one. He served in WWII. I was just a small child and I didn’t really understand what was wrong with Uncle Jess. I never heard him say a full sentence . Whenever someone would speak to him he would reply with a soft , um, and a smile. I would sometimes watch him from afar as he sat among the other men. He was in the same room with them, but he always looked like his mind was somewhere else. I asked daddy one time why Uncle Jess was so sad. I can’t remember exactly all that daddy told me, but I do remember him saying that Uncle Jess was a medic who had fought in a war. While trying to help the wounded, he was shot in the leg. That night he and other soldiers had taken refuge under a bridge where Uncle Jess still tried to help his wounded companions. As they waited for daylight, the blood of soldiers, dead and dying on top of the bridge ran down upon them. Daddy said that Uncle Jess never got over that time. I have no idea where Uncle Jess fought or the name of the bridge. I only know that daddy said the bridge was very important. If anyone knows where my Uncle may have fought and possibly what bridge it could have been, I would appreciate any info.

I've never served in the military and even I know no one wears medals from a dress uniform on their utility uinform

You are 100% correct. Only on Class A uniform. Now, the medal could have been pinned on in formation while you were wearing Cammo Utilities, then removed. Semper Fi from an old Marine Sergeant.

My past G'pa is a WW2 vet. He Never talked about. I was taking German in school and tried to show off but he was much more fluent than I. He passed away *thinking* 7(??) years ago. He had already paid for a bare-bones service. We call it the $14.99 special. I was handed the folded flag

uni read AF on patch. Dog tags you would have to read them to see since it used to have branch of service.

Correct, that was an older multicam Army uniform. Airforce had a similar tiger stripe uniform, but he was wearing an Army uniform. At a distance they looked fairly similar. The easiest way to tell them apart was to look at the color of the boots. Army has the brown boots, Air Force had some sort of green boots. So that guy was also in the wrong branch's uniform on top of all the medals, patches, and other crap.

Hell I'm just glad I did,it takes a giant taxi to transport these guys, if you are a fake go join I promise in will take less time to become an serve than it does for you to walk that lie for the rest of your life I was a BT. Loved the flight deck, that was cool. Everyone take care.

I worked for a crusty old bastard for years. He was really rude and abusive, and often told stories about how he had signed up to go to Vietnam in ‘66 (I think. Maybe ‘65). He talked about how he had been a gunner in a helicopter, and that they’d fly over guys on the ground running, firing at them. Flushing them out of copses of trees, aiming at their heels trying to get them to flip over. I didn’t put a huge amount of thought into it, but I did figure it excused some of his prickly personality. Years down the line, as his health began failing and I was the last person staying by his side, helping him run the small business, I also helped him with his personal paperwork and medical info. While I was on the phone, speaking for him and filling out paperwork, I had to ask him if he were a veteran. I almost didn’t bother asking. It seemed ridiculous. But I asked. Sure enough. That old creep had been lying to us all for years. I kind of paused and side-eyed him. Was at a loss for words. He mistreated me for years. He was incredibly rude, often racist, just something like 70% of the time a complete bastard. I ended up not saying anything. He was on his way out. But I was pissed. And not just about how he’d treated everyone for all those years, but because my own father HAD actually been to Vietnam. Honestly, I kinda wanted to slug him. Edit: I didn’t get to know my father until I was in my late 20’s. He’d spent decades wrapped up in alcohol and drugs. He’s doing great now, thank goodness. I had never heard him talk at all about being in the military, and really still don’t know details. He was in the hospital a few years ago, and caught MERS (dunno if that abbreviation is correct. Maybe MRSA? I dunno. The common infection you can get in the hospital. Very dangerous). He began hallucinating something fierce, thinking there were snakes and bugs on the ceiling, and was having flashbacks to his time in Vietnam. That’s when I asked his wife about it. He’d never even told me, himself.

@The Spacedog We live in a weird socially bankrupt society. In the mid 1980's when someone wore woodland camoflage everyone thought they were cool because of the second Rambo movie. For the past couple of years people sometimes throw temper tantrums over it ...

When I was 16 I joined the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve Infantry, and while away on my BMQ our platoon CO gave us all weekend leave and we weren't locked down on base. I loved the uniform, and had wanted to join the military since I was little, so I wanted to wear it to show off when some friends and I decided to go to the closest town to the base with a movie theater. Ignoring the advice of my comrades, I wore my olive drab combats in the hopes of gettin' lucky (hey, our Master Corporal told us to "change our oil" over the weekend, I was taking his orders seriously). We'll, it wouldn't be my luck if the platoon 2IC wasn't visiting the same movie theater at the same time. That was almost twenty years ago now, and I can still remember how terrified I was while standing at rigid attention in the lobby of the busy theater, getting a quiet, but "you REALLY fucked up" level of dressing down. Never made that mistake again lol. Your explaining of the rules reminded me of that little gem, thank you.
