My father was a 12 year Marine who fought in the Pacific in WWII at Iwo Jima. He left the Corp a Gunnery Sargent. He never spoke of his days in combat, and although his dress blues remained in his closet until the day he died, he never wore them again. I could sense that he had a certain feeling about his service, but it never appeared to be pride. It more resembled humility, and love for those that served with him. He was, and will always be my hero.

It was said that my father fought in New Guinea during WW11. He never talked about it at all. If you ever asked about it he would say a couple of words and that was it. After he died I had a strong suspicion that he never actually served at all, since he acted as If it never happened. So, off I went to where they kept military records and gave them his name. To my surprise the young fella wandered off and came back with a stack of papers in his hands, they were my father's military records. What did I find out? Hospitalised from an explosion during traing.Two tours of New Guinea. Six months of mopping up and the internment of the enemy. Over six months of being bombed In Darwin. All this and he never said a word. He never claimed his medals. He never belonged to an RSL. He never attended an ANZAC Parde or even bothered to watch it on TV.

OMG! That woman worked at the VA and stole records! As a retired VA worker that absolutely sets my hair on fire. There's some really sketchy people working for the VA, but this one takes the cake. It's scary how much info is available to bottom of the food chain workers. This one wasn't too smart if she stole the DD-214 of a person of a different race. The Purple Heart alone would get a Vet 100% Service-Connected disabled distinction. They get the fast track to their VA benefits. Just wait until HIPPA gets their hands on her. A Navy vet in my father's American Legion post lost his leg in a motorcycle accident about 20 years after his discharge. He's totally honest about the story & that his loss is unrelated to his service. His honesty earned my respect. I've seen him quickly bring it up when a stranger offers to pay for his meal or so. He's especially bombarded by people on Veteran's Day; thanking him for his alleged loss. After awhile, he just: stopped, nodded his head, & looked at the rest of the other veterans of the post.

@@Alex-xh9kv It is funny, because I have some friends they served they went places and did things. I was in the National Guard for 6 years. I was 11B and 12C. In 6 years I did stuff, went to drill, AT, etc. No combat, shot a lot of weapons, no deployment, I did go to North Dakota for 2 weeks for 12C MOS training, the mosquitos were real bad. Maybe some of it had to do with I went into OSUT at the start of the first Gulf war, it was over by the time we got done. I was in HHC 1st of the 169th Yankee Division, over a couple years they disbanded YD, we ended up in limbo, different units every month, then finally got sent to an engineering unit to build medium girder bridges. That was what I did.

Worked with a guy 'bout 30 yrs ago. He walked kinda funny but not really that bad. I noticed one day he had a DAV plate on his car. I asked him what was up with that and he said he was injured while in the service... marine I think. Turns out some other guys did some checking up on him as he was pushing his 'injury' on some of the real soldiers there. They found he was given a medical discharge and yes it was for his knee but the way he was injured was not how he claimed. Turns out he mouthed off to the wrong marine one day and got his ass... and knee kicked.. or blown out! So now the guy gets disability status and all that goes with it... and I know its been a long time but I think there was a purple heart on his plate too!

The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 makes it a Federal crime for an individual to fraudulently hold oneself out to be a recipient of any of several specified military decorations or medals with the intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit. It was enacted by the government to help protect real military heroes from phonies. It is a federal crime and subject to a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both.

@annb9422
@annb9422 2 жыл бұрын
@@ashleysanford8645 Here is what happened regarding the three Stolen Valor Acts with the two prior ones that were repealed. Below will also include what had happened previously with the Supreme court prior to the new Stolen Valor Act. President Obama signed into law in 2013 the latest version of the Stolen Valor Act, which makes it a federal crime for people to pass themselves off as war heroes by wearing medals they didn't rightfully earn. The legislation passed both houses of Congress with overwhelming majorities. An earlier version, passed in 2005, was struck down in June 2012 when the Supreme Court ruled that lying about military heroics was constitutionally protected speech unless there was intent to gain some benefit or something of value by fraud. The new law included a provision, making it illegal to make the claims with the intent to obtain money, property or other tangible benefits. Veterans organizations were quick to applaud Congress and the President for acting quickly on the amended version of the law. "I think this was necessary because people were using it to receive the benefits of decorations of valor, and they were getting monetary benefit from it," said John Stovall, director of national security and foreign relations for The American Legion. "That's why we supported the amended version, not to infringe on anyone's First Amendment rights but to protect the reputation and meaning of the decorations." The 2005 law made its way to the Supreme Court after a California man challenged his conviction and $5,000 fine for unlawfully claiming to be a Medal of Honor recipient. The court declared the law unconstitutional unless the fabricator intended to get something of value by making the claims. William "Bill" Hillar of Maryland spent years claiming to have been a Special Forces soldier with expertise in human trafficking and counter-terrorism. Colleges and universities paid him to teach classes, and law enforcement organizations paid to hear his presentations. But the charge that got Hillar sentenced to 21 months in federal prison was wire fraud, not the 2005 Stolen Valor Act. Among Hillar's claims was that he went on a one-man search for a daughter kidnapped and sold into slavery; the story was the basis for the Liam Neeson film "Taken. He was arrested finally in Jan. 2011 after his scam was exposed by veterans through the website ProfessionalSoldiers. The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 was introduced into the House by Rep. Joe Heck, R-Nev., who has said the awards, like the men and women who earned them, are worthy of respect. Other lawmakers shared Heck's sentiment. "I'm very happy the President signed the Stolen Valor Act," said Rep. Paul Cook, R-Calif., a retired Marine colonel. "The new law ensures that we protect and honor veterans and the sacrifices they've made. When people make false claims of military rank and heroism, it does a tremendous disservice not only to our vets, but to the public." Sarah claimed to have received a Bronze Medal and Purple Heart for her service, wore a so called miltary uniform adorned with medals among other things with the intention of obtaining money, property or other tangible benefits which she has done. So she committed a federal crime and there are penalties for that.

Stolen valor is most prevalent in countries whereby the citizenry give military servicemen and women God-like status, i.e. allowing them to get to the front of queues and receive heavy discounts on certain goods and services, as well as being treated with constant "thankyou for your service blah blah blah" everywhere they go, with easy access to used/surplus military uniforms a secondary but closely related reason for its prevalence in some countries (USA, I'm talking about you) and almost non-existence in other countries... For example, we have cases of stolen valor here in Australia, but it's barely a problem, mostly because 1) We don't recognise or treat current or former military volunteers as though they are gods, and 2) It's next to impossible to acquire military (ceremonial) uniform designs, medals or insignia... Sure, we give our returned servicemen and women a gold card that gets them discounts on certain goods and services, but unless they pull it out of their wallet or purse, you'd never ever ever know they were current or former military. They don't walk around the suburbs or return home from a posting still wearing their fatigues or ceremonial dress like Americans do...

Retired Marine here. My two cents: When you say "sexual assault" right away the questions and digging will stop out of respect. Like James said, she just laid it too thick with the BS and PH, and a sloppy salute would have raised red flags. Oh, and those EGAs on her uniform, the anchors are supposed to face inboard...I think I would have sensed this fraud right away.

I retired from the military in 2016 after 22 years. I lost a lot of friends and subordinates to suicides, combat and accidents. Although I’m somewhat able-bodied, I still struggle mentally adapting to daily life as a civilian. I know I’m not the only one who struggles and I know there are support programs/agencies out there to help us. I am grateful to these agencies and people that volunteer their time and energy to help veterans and their families. Even though I choose not to use them, I always encourage others that could benefit to do so. This heifer makes me sick. I rank this ….. right up there with pedophiles and thieves

I come from a very strong military family. Some of the stories passed down to me are almost as unbelievable as this lady’s. One for example is that my grandfather was a POW in Japan during WW2. However it can and has been confirmed. I wanted to join the air force, however I was hit by a car in my youth and suffered a spine injury. Aside from being illegal stolen valor is just wrong and disrespectful to those who served, as well as to the country for which they served. I have total respect for all military personnel regardless of their terms or branch. I thank each and everyone one of you.

Honestly, all female marines that I know are probably the most detailed marines that the corps has to offer. The fact that she does not know how to salute would probably be the biggest give away. I really don’t care much about people using military costumes but she took it to another level. She has some serious issues and used vulnerability to get what she wanted. She literally used up resources that other service members could had used. I know the VA needs some fixing but they actually take care of vets when is needed. This is completely horrid and I hope she gets that help.

My Dad was a MM/3 in the Navy during WWII and had rheumatic fever. He was discharged with 100% disability but after a few years he let it go down to nothing because he didn't want anything he didn't think he deserved. In 1969 when he had a massive heart attack, and had to retire medically from General Electric, his doctor wrote a letter to get the VF to reinstate his disability because the rheumatic fever had weakened his heart just as the Navy had said in 1946. Interestingly the heart murmur he had had since the attack of rheumatic fever disappeared when he had the massive heart attack.

@@nerofl89 You definitely have a point there, but something definitely needs to be done about these people going around claiming to be something they are not, AND collecting taxpayers money for something they didn't work for and earn. That is theft in itself, and not to mention when you have family members that have died serving our country, and then you have people that have never worn a uniform , they are morally urinating all over that uniform. And the money that they are being fined for, like I said before it all goes to the VA. Also the government is going to do whatever the government wants to do, look at taxes that everybody pays every year, or every week on their paycheques, that was only supposed to be temporary to help with the war effort. When WW I was over, the taxes were supposed to be not collected by the government anymore. And you are right, because the government liked that money and they just kept collecting it. @@AlanTClark Like I said before treat them as they deserve. Lying is not, nor should it ever be, a crime in the US. Theft, fraud, etc. should be treated as it is, and no there shouldn't be any extra fines or anything attached. Stolen valor is extraordinarily reprehensible, those people should be mocked, shamed, and ostracized by society, but never give the government that power because it will not stop stolen valor. It will inevitably lead to lying about x, or y, or z, and it will be the government that judges who is lying, not fact/science/videos/etc., but bureaucrats sitting in an office that never have to face the people. The young Marine had a campaign ribbon on his jacket. He stopped the young Marine and told him he didn't earn that ribbon and to get it off his uniform now. The guy tried to tell the retired sergent that he was awarded the ribbon. Turns out the ribbon was a WWI Victory Medal the guy had bought in a surplus store and had no idea what it was! I have known people that can identify medals and ribbons all the way back to before the Civil War. I would suspect that most service men can recognize most military awards.

I had an instructor in MOS that had been busted from staff sergeant to cpl for assaulting an officer that ranked back up to staff nco. but he served from like the 70s-late 90s early 2000s.

My father, myself, my ex-husband, our 2 sons, and our daughter have all honorably served in our beloved Corps and I was beyond disgusted when I watched her wearing our uniform. I cannot believe that she is a commander at her local VFW!!! To this day, I still have male Marines that try to trip me up with questions about the Corps because they question that I had served. By the way, I am old Corps and I still love being called a WM!

100% service connected disabled veteran USNAVY.86-91. Husband retired LT O3E. We are disgusted by this woman as we met, married and spent 25 years in service. I think we need to get female veterans to attend her hearings and turn our backs on her. It infuriates me that all that $$$$ ( like 400k) went to her and her wife!! THROW THE BOOK AT HER.. EXAMPLE OUT OF HER!!!

I didn't know her story till today when I saw your video.... before the pic of her 'saluting' there was a 'close up' of her in Blues..... as soon as I saw how her collar EGA's were pinned on..... I started to get shaky and my heart started pounding real hard. (the Anchors point *inward* Not outward as she had them)

My dad taught me that most people who have seen combat don't talk much about it. He was a Marine in Alpha 1/1 2nd platoon at the beginning of the tet offensive in Vietnam. He recently passed away. Crazy to think people would love to pretend to be my dead dad lol .

I've had to do the IDme thing a half dozen times for the discount. The VA gives out ID cards. I've got a retiree card, so it's easier. If she's got some experience with the paperwork, I mean, it can't be too hard to make a half-ass attempt to fake this.

I agree with what was said in the video, i'm surprised she got away with it for as long as she did. I'm an army vet and having worked with Marines in the past, that jacked up salute would have immediately set off alarm bells. The other part that surprises me is no one asked for a benefits letter from the VA. They're easy enough to download from Ebenefits and i've been asked for them multiple times. The worst part is, cause of her actions, legitimate veterans will have to wait longer to get help they need pretty quickly.

For someone to take the uniform and decorations of any military unit without being entitled to, that is about as low as you can get, absolutely vile individuals.

Question: If you're in the military and get busted down a few levels, like this woman, do you have to turn that uniform or insignias, patches, etc back in delineating the higher rank? Just curious.

Jailtime, having to meet with paralyzed veterans, maybe some meeting with active duty personnel who get a free pass to overlook any harassment they may give her.... There's plenty of ways to make examples out of people who steal valor. My personal favorite was the one who had to write out a personalized letter of apology to every living recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor.

As a combat veteran, I have asked for a military discount once when I was strapped for cash getting a hotel room to attend a friend's funeral who I served with. At ball games when they want to recognize veterans, I won't stand. It's really awkward for me. Been to the VA once to get a flu shot.

I feel ya. Keep a low profile. Good for OPSEC purposes also. Family, some friends, and a few who take the time to ask know I served, but otherwise it can be awkward.
